Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

I am loving all the folks commenting against the very valid points of this writer. I speak as someone who agrees with most of what she says. I am loving the whole, "you can leave" argument. Hilarious. You folks sure are making the case for being "Friendly" LOL.

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

This article says nothing -- nothing to denounce the proclamation of friendliest city. Yes, Charleston is dealing with the same issues all urban areas have to deal with -- but with Riley-Tecklinburg we are doing it better than most, and certainly with much more transparency. What are you really trying to say????

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

She has pointed out many points in this article. It's sad that most people who do work downtown do not live there or was forced out due to not being able to afford to live there. But that only goes to show you the people who made Charleston so beautiful no longer stay there and this city has taken an a plastic look. Sometimes I go Mt.Pleasant and the people there are so Uppity not all but a majority. Dwntwn is now a boozers paradise, lol with some great food.Charleston is not all its cracked up to be. Ijs

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

Really, people. Re-read the article. Stephanie is just telling the underbelly truth. And for you who have left and pine to come back, please do! If you can afford a $500,000 home or $1500 rent, or 2+ hours of traffic at the beginning and end of each day. My lovely city ( I moved her 31 years ago) has indeed changed and not for the better. And unfortunately, like most other things, follow the money, follow the money.

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

Thanks for opening my eyes. I'll never again be able to marvel at the architecture, enjoy seeing another dolphin in our harbor, savor a wonderful local meal or enjoy speaking with a fellow Lowcountry resident, after reminding me about all the bad things around us. Could it be that hatemonger candidate has something to do with it? You must be a wonderful parent pointing out all the bullshit going on in the world. Maybe instead of pointing it out, you can do something to fix it. Oh, I worked for the family who owns Conde Nast. I'll let them know we say "hey" down here. Hope it doesn't jeopardize our ranking!

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

I lived in Charleston. It was challenging to work in the city, to get there, and pay was not ever a living wage, but other than the slave driven mentality of my employers it was very "friendly" but not authentic kindness. People do have a formality of friendliness, but not truly caring. As a result I TRY to be kinder, more patient, and generous. However there is so much I love about Charleston seeing people being civil and polite, if not authentic is the least of it's problems. I can only be the change I would like to see.

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

(According to Conde Nast, "friendliest" cities are those that are easily navigable and where locals say hello and are quick to offer tourists directions.)

Oh man! Obviously Conde Nast didn't go to Iowa cuz we would've won :-)

From someone who moved away. I'd give you my right arm to return. Seriously? It's a little piece of heaven and it's pros far out weigh it's cons....
This article seems petty and judgmental.Charleston's issues are the same issues every city has....

Re: “Stegelin: What do you have to lose?

Did you even do any minor research into the numbers Mr Trump used in the speech that your basing this cartoon on? Facts should matter.
What is the unemployment rate of African Americans since The current President took office? Has it improved?
What is the unemployment rate of African American Teenagers since The current President took office?

Dont believe the hype...The Clintons only represent one group. Themselves.

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

A big, "friendly" thank you for this, the dirty little secret of Charleston that people who move here "from everywhere else" (which I did as well) tend to overlook, either deliberately or because they just don't know any better, or just don't care:

"it'd be awfully friendly if the workers who clean that one public bathroom, or change the sheets at our expanding galaxy of hotels, could actually afford to live within a 30-mile radius of their jobs. Is it friendly that our neighbors in the Charleston Neck and North area don't have access to fresh, affordable groceries? Are we friendly when we scare the hell out of parents of special needs children by threatening to shutter the school that offers much-needed, and yes expensive, services to their kids?"

Re: “Stegelin: What do you have to lose?

why would you believe that? I think TRUMP probably changed some A.M. minds considering all he did was tell the truth.nearly all of the large metropolitan cities controlled by the progs/dems. have been a cesspool of violence, crime, broken families and the black/minority culture is the one most effected since they are the majority of the population" living 'on the socialist/progs/dems. plantation".THE GREAT SOCIETY the brain child of LBJ. really started the entitlement mentially of the black society. prior to that time the black family was much more whole . the dems/progs/socialist will do whatever it takes to keep their BLACK VOTE locked down to insure a nice big fat voting block. keep them fat, happy and stupid buy that vote. BOSS TWEET WOULD BE REEEEALL PROUD.

Re: “Calling bullshit on Charleston's friendliest city designation

I am a NOLA girl who has lived here for over 25 yrs- have to say- this town has won me over- love it here and the people. Wish the secret wasn't out- everyone wants to live here now- but I do miss my NOLA to go cups- everywhere you can walk down the street with an adult beverage- I know its a NOLA thing- this town is a tad backwards in its thinking- but thats the southern way-

Guilt, backwards, neglect? Honestly, grow a pair and get over yourselves y'all. Charleston isn't perfect, no place is, yet it is a beautiful, friendly, and comforting place. Stop wallowing in your self pity and enjoy where you are. If you refuse to, we'll kindly wave goodbye to you as you begin a journey seeking the impossible.
