^ Your dad didn't fight in a war to protect a flag. He fought to protect what the flag stands for, which are all of the freedoms we enjoy. One of those freedoms being the freedom to express oneself without reproach from the government. This includes flag burning. It's one of the great ironies in this country that people get so worked up about things like flag burning and not standing for the national anthem and not reciting the pledge of allegiance and still claim to love freedom. They only love the freedom that is convenient and doesn't make them feel uncomfortable. This makes them hypocrites. In World War 2 we were fighting AGAINST countries that did punish its own citizens for speaking out against the government.
Truthus, the bill Clinton CO-sponsored that you are referring to was to prevent flag burning when it was done to incite violence or terrorism. It was a few years after 9/11 when the histrionics about patriotism were still on full blast. I still don't agree with it but don't pretend that is anywhere near the same thing as what Donald Trump is saying now.
@Truthrus: Hillary's bill protected flag burning in protest while criminalizing it in provocation. "Fighting words" are not protected speech. Points deducted for making it a bill, points deducted for making it a bill that is redundant, points awarded for protecting the right to protest. Trump's real problem statement is revocation of citizenship, which takes this from "ill advised" to "disastrous." Did Hillary include that in the SB she sponsored? Would you agree that Trump's idea is thus absolutely worse?
@Frank: I am a veteran and I have a deep and abiding belief in protection of unpopular speech, including burning the flag. My feelings are not what need protecting from the government, but instead peoples' right to express their grievances. So even if I was made to feel sick by seeing it, I feel sick about a lot of the protected speech that flies around this country.
My dad volunteered for WW2 when he was 17. 17 years old! He & millions of other boys did the same in order to protect the American Flag. He passed last month at the age of 90. His casket was covered with the American flag! Let me ask all those "freedom of speech" supppoters, if that was your dad or brother or aister, who fought for our country, do you feel ok with some idiot burning our flag? Use a maegaphone, you piece of poop!!
I didn't vote for either of the two clowns that were running for president, but I sure this precious snowflake Ms. Gilchrist, who now is in a "terrible funk since Nov. 8" because she feels a "weird, aggressive anger from some folks whose man had won" was the same woman that was calling all those who were going to voted for Trump racists, sexists, mouth-breathers, homophobes, etc. Better run to that safe-space, and don't forget your tin hat.
What goes around, comes around
MANDATORY RELIGIOUS-BASED NATIONAL REGISTRATIONS!!!!
What is this, the National Inquirer? Nah, just another ranting 1%er radical leftist chicken little....Jeez, where does the CCP find these people?....Anyone who can hold a crayon gets to write an OP, as long as their opinion is so out of the mainstream as to be in the forest.
I believe the idea is to provide restrict immigration vetting from war-torn countries that might have potent radial Islamic terrorists posing as refugees, sort of like the way we had restricted immigration vetting during WWII when Nazi terrorists were attempting to enter the country as refugees to cause sabotage. Tuesday's terror incident at Ohio State proves the point.
I suppose if we where in 1942, the CCP would have members of the German American Bund writing OPs attempting to shame us for not letting in all refugees from the Fatherland.
And so did Hillary, she sponsored a bill trying to do the same. But that is an inconvenient truth that you wont mention. And laws along with court rulings change. and something else is then established law. And any time tupper says I would think, a reasonable person somewhere wishes he would.
That sucks. I remember when that place was LaLa Lucci's or however it was spelled.
It is really difficult to believe all these things that Trump literally said on the record that Ali is riffing on. Right, guys?
I feel like Ali is being a bit racially myopic, though. The largest majority-Muslim nation on earth is not in the Middle East, nor North Africa. It is Indonesia! And since nuance is not a trait commonly associated with racial vigilantism, plus the fact that Indonesian use of common, family surnames is quite limited, that means a lot of East Asian people are going to have to move into the camps along with you. Just for a spell, of course. You know, until they get the system down and get all the kinks of the loyalty oaths and family background checks and whatnot.
It really seems like the job growth sector that President Donald J. Trump will really foster growth in is DHS. The incoming head of DHS explicitly stated that he visualizes imprisoning up to a million American citizens without trial by suspending habeas corpus and shipping them to GITMO or other offshore justice dispensaries. That's a jobs program, right there.
A burger with fries for $8 while still ridiculous is well below the downtown market rate.
Ultimately it comes down to this: why aren't Charlestonians making un-fancy, reasonably-priced pub food a good business choice for restaurateurs? Volume begets deals.
gourmet prices I'm sure. So long cheap liquor drinks
What are the people scared of? Maybe they're afraid of the idiots rioting and burning because they didn't get their girl elected. I keep hearing about all these threats and symbols but have yet to see one authenticated. Perhaps you are like the ones who said there was a surge in hate group searches after Obama was elected, when in fact, that was proven to be false also just by an internet search. You make a lot of sense most of the time but I think the shoe should be on the other foot for this column
This guy sounds like the rednecks when Obama got elected.
Yes, lets not exaggerate or form conjecture with no proof. Is this not one of those things you constantly bash Trump about? Making brash statements with no backing proof?
Hey Trump could decide we will all leave earth and migrate to mars whether or not we want to go. Why, he is forming secret legions of armed census takers now to identify everyone so no one gets missed as we all queue up to board the spaceships to take us all off planet! We should all be concerned! I have no proof, but its true, because I just said it was!
Extraordinary proud and grateful to be in your neighborhood, Shani. Thank you for articulating the feelings of so many (myself included!) who have yet to find the words for this new era.
nice look, nice menu, but that makes it not the Blind Tiger
"gourmet bar" - check the link and read the menu. it's as "gourmet" as Juanita's and Andolinis.
Community is where it starts, like the branch inside a lung. From there, it spreads and nurtures the other organs and communities until they function together as a whole body.
I just hope that this rhetorical hand job was pleasing to its intended audience. Burning the flag in protest is protected speech as a matter of settled case law, but also revocation of citizenship is forbidden as a violation of the 8th Amendment as a matter of settled case law.
In unrelated news, Trump Org settled a fraud case with the state of NY for $25 million dollars, something that would normally flag a company as "never do business with these people again" under federal contracting practices. Welcome to Trump's America.
