Re: “Local emcee says the Holy City scene needs more unity, support

Exactly, Ima. Music venues in bars are businesses that sell drinks and sometimes have cover charges. Bands are a means to get the cover charges paid and drinks sold.

If the "music community" can support each other enough to show up at each others' shows and buy enough drinks to make a profit for the bars, then great. If not, it's all just wanking into the wind.

Re: “Chef Brannon Florie opens his third Mt. Pleasant restaurant next Tuesday

That's the first I've heard about what was happening on Coleman with the former Fonduely Yours / Oriental Garden space. Interesting, though I guess there will be other businesses there too.

What about the former Boulevard Diner? Hard to keep up with what's going up and coming down on Coleman.

On 41 is good, the menu does work for adults and kids.

Re: “Chef Brannon Florie opens his third Mt. Pleasant restaurant next Tuesday

If Chef Florie has made that benigted space that On 41 now occupies finally work after so many others have tried and failed, then maybe he's just the guy to work the former Bangkok Garden space that has also seen its share of tenants over the past few years. Nothing he can do about the crappy access to that shopping center, just make a great product that matches consumer demand.

Also: now I'm bummed that Bangkok Garden closed!

Really great article. The author defines some ways to seek solutions rather than just complaining, like previous articles on this subject have. Wishing him good luck in his endeavors.

Way to sell out......congrats on the big sell but how sad that soon the ambience of the old Charleston will be gone.

Re: “Local emcee says the Holy City scene needs more unity, support

This is the second local artist in recent months to write a column about local support for local music. This one is a lot more articulate than the last one, but it also highlights a disconnect by young artists, and it's a disconnect that affected me years and years ago when I was in a struggling band. We spend a couple of years building a following big enough so that we could be booked into our area's version of the Music Farm as a headliner. We pulled a good rowdy crowd, the night ended and it was time to settle up with the owner and he said the words we had no idea we needed to know. He said,"boys I'll keep on hiring you as long as you keep selling beer" He explained that it cost him $200 to open his doors on any given night (this was a long time ago) and it took a lot of 25c draft beers and 50c bottles just to break even. As long as we could draw a crowd that would cover his expenses and give him a little profit we had a job. Today, I'm sure we're talking a thousand or more in expenses a night. If you can provide a product that will cause people to cover his expenses, you'll work. If not, you won't. I don't know of any local venues that work as a charity. Is this selling out? No, it's entertaining. You made be God's greatest poet, but if nobody else agrees you're going to be God's greatest broke poet. And by the way, After I got married and had a couple of kids I got a job and left the band. The rest of the guys? 40 years later, they're still playing Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights at regional clubs and every one of them has put a couple of kids through college. Are they famous? Not unless you live within a hundred mile radius of them, but they still sell a shit-load of beer.

Re: “The South's intentional ignorance encourages groups like the Secessionist Party

So many commenters just proved you right. The worst kind of ignorance is when one doesn't only deny reality, but actively refuses to acknowledge the truth. Not worth my time to refute the idiots, but I will say a resounding HAHAHA at them.

Re: “The South's intentional ignorance encourages groups like the Secessionist Party

I agree with local hutch 100%. Go and live in Chappequa with the hildebeast and Bill. By the way did you know that slavery was created by the Democratic Party? They also came up with the KKK. The Confederate flag does not represent slavery either. Go and get your facts straight Mat. While we are on the treason subject did anyone hear about the treasonous acts that our current lame duck president committed? Well apparently he told central command to "cook" the information coming in and not report it to anyone. That information pertained to ISIS and their proliferation. Go and listen to Hannity from Friday... Such corruption with those Dems.

Re: “Thank you for my beautiful life

To the family of this wonderful woman:
Alison's soul will carry on through her daughter and all those who were fortunate to know her. I am thankful for her having shared her story with so many of us. Her grace and love shined through in every word she wrote. May we all learn to cherish life, family and friends as she did.

I wish her a safe journey and know that heaven will gain what our world lost .

Re: “Thank you for my beautiful life

Thank you for this. My beloved, beautiful, brilliant mother entered hospice this month at age 67, after being diagnosed in May. Her strength and fortitude serve her well, but I know it makes it harder for her to accept help now. I'm hoping she sees it as those who want to help see it--a gift to be able to be of the slightest assistance to this woman so many love.

Re: “USC Upstate closes gender studies center that booked lesbian play

Homophobia is a bigoted slang created by leftist Statists. It translates to fear of the same, which shows how bigoted and clumsy these agenda driven idiots are!

Whether some one can control behavioral desires does not make any behavioral desire a behavioral virtue. Reproductive systems are their for one reason, and the only phobics are the behaviorally perverted prideful bigots who think their perverted behavior illness is somehow entitled to recognition over other perverted behaviors like incest and bisexual domestic sexual relationship partners.

The left is a fascist collectivist body politic propaganda hammer. Stand up to them or be prepared to get fired and discriminated against for your behavioral viewpoints. They are extremely proud and spiteful!

Title IX and gender segregated sports for women only is fascist! Women aren't about equal opportunity, they are about promoting their own self serving interests!
