Re: “After 37 years, Norm's has closed making way for Smith Street Pizza

But why can't D'Al's have a broader menu up here in their own neighborhood (Cannonborough-Elliotborough)? Darn it if there weren't times that I wanted a good hoagie, or some wings -- like during the Super Bowl -- and none were to be found for delivery nearby or from a local business. I try to support my neighbors and local businesses, but they have to offer what we want.

Re: “Boeing workers may soon vote on decision to unionize

Sigh, we already went through this last round with Boeing. WTF is up Boeing with all the propaganda constantly once again to the general public? That TV ad is moronic. That P & C "opinion" piece yesterday by your P & C boot licking lackey was the biggest pile of horse shit yet. Just like last time, who are those BS ads aimed at? Are your employees sheeple that must be led? Have they no cognitive ability to make choices? Can you not bribe them with small raises? Perhaps you may want to consider paying them a little closer to what their Seattle counterparts make? Our cost of living is just as high as Seattle in Charleston (or it feels that way). The more Boeing squawks, squeaks and flops around the more we smell something bad. No ads on TV or in print and none of us would even notice y'all, except for when we pass you on our way to the airport. Most of us could give a good rats ass about your Union battle, keep it internal. Talk among yourselves and quit bothering the rest of us. We got our own problems.

Re: “The Break

Best Caf and small live music venue to open its doors to Charleston in 10 years, at least. Garrett is the very hard working owner that practices what he believes, and Heather, as well as many of the other employees, make this place more welcoming than most of the customers deserve.
These are great people doing a great thing, really..., because they just love it. I wish and hope nothing but the absolute best for all of them, as well as the business itself. I know I support them as often as possible and so should everyone else. This is the type of place that defines Charleston, the kind of place tourists imagine visiting and experiencing when they come to visit. The Caf is what it is without pomp or that aloof hipster entitlement.
They like good beverages, comfortable furniture and great music, and they want to share it all with you...just walk in and let them. You'll feel better for doing so because you will be better for doing so.

Re: “Attorneys for Michael Slager ask that his statements to investigators be excluded from federal trial

As we've said before, why are police investigative tactics suddenly bad when they are used against police?

Slager would make a fine addition to the Trump administration, not wanting people to use his own words against him. And mark my words, one of two things is going to happen. Either our lovely new AG is going to press on federal prosecutors to drop the case, or if he is eventually convicted, he will be pardoned.

Re: “Boeing workers may soon vote on decision to unionize

I think it's good for the workers' fight to be made public. If they are successful, maybe it will inspire and help other groups become engaged in collective bargaining. I understand unions are not popular here, but collective bargaining is more than just lazy people wanting more money for less work. It's about ensuring safe and ethical working conditions and protections against corporate intimidation and malfeasance in addition to compensating people in a more reasonable manner. If corporations like Boeing want to continue to be subsidized by the government and taxpayer for their operations and losses, they can afford to utilize more their profits on their worker's qualities of life, while still making millions and billions of dollars for themselves.

Re: “A letter from an Iranian American to Charleston

@Delana - why does he describe himself as half-Iranian, half-Latino instead of 100% pure-beef American? Because 100% pure-beef Americans in general don't let him forget it. "Immigrants are ruining this country. Muslims are ruining this country. Latinos are ruining this country. Sharia law! Jobs! Illegals!"
"Hey, I'm an immigrant, and a Muslim, and a Latino..."
"WHY WON'T YOU JUST ACCEPT BEING AN AMERICAN."

Put yourself in someone else's shoes. It isn't that hard.

Re: “A letter from an Iranian American to Charleston

"Since when did loving your country & being patriotic become so taboo"

There is nothing wrong with loving your country. There is a huge problem with being blind to its faults. The people who created this country were pretty clear on their thoughts regarding fear being used to strip away freedoms. And they established a very intricate system of checks and balances to make sure rights were preserved.

Our current administration seems to have no interest in, or doesn't understand that. Trump wants to rule by decree and try to silence and intimidate anyone who tells him no. We aren't even 100 days into the administration and how many things have already been proven that Trump and his advisers have lied about? They are constantly using fear and misinformation so people will easily surrender the rights you claim to love. That is not freedom. That is nothing to love or be patriotic about.

Re: “Boeing workers may soon vote on decision to unionize

While I appreciate Boeing's local presence (except for the free infrastructure and tax-exempt status), I have grown tired and weary of the constant barrage of tit-for-tat on the public airwaves. I, as a non-Boeing affiliated member of the public, would like to suggest we have one more vote; put to the public instead of the private yea/nay voters within the ranks of Boeing. I say we vote to ban public ads related to union voting. I, in no way, am affected by the vote except to have to deal with the unending onslaught of hateful ads. Boeing and the IAM need to keep their pleas WITHIN the walls of Boeing. VOTE ALREADY, STFU AND LEAVE THE PUBLIC OUT OF IT!

It's one thing to be anti-Trump, it's another to try to appropriate the Charleston church shooting for your own political gain. Too soon, an ad hominem attack, and frankly disgusting

Re: “A letter from an Iranian American to Charleston

Just to be clear, the ban is on LEGAL immigrant RESIDENTS - Visa and initially, Green Card holders - illegals sneak in, but not on a plane. The enhanced vetting put in place since 9/11, is so thorough, it takes 18 to 24+ months to complete. So far it has been completely effective because since 9/11, there have been "zero" terrorist attacks on American soil by any illegal immigrant, Visa or Green Card holder. All have been perpetrated by US citizens.....ALL. And, the recent attack on a mosque in Canada was committed by a non-Muslim with nationalist leanings and proclaimed support of Trump and his ideals on his social media accounts. I am a descendant of immigrants that invaded these lands in the 1600s and displaced the ONLY non-immigrants - Native Americans.

And no terrorism has been handed down on American soil from citizens of any of the seven countries. Fear created to manipulate and control, which is certainly not democracy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that just doesn't get the whole part Iranian, part this , part that..... I suppose we could all trace back our heritage to show we're part this & that! We live in this great country & enjoy our freedoms because AMERICANS DIED to give us thESE LUXURIES. Since when did loving your country & being patriotic become so taboo?

Re: “A letter from an Iranian American to Charleston

NerdHerd, first, thank you for your response. I mean no personal insults to anyone on this blog. I respect your opinions and offer my own, nothing more.

I feel what you really want here is non-dissenting dialog where we all sit and congratulate ourselves on our single mindedness. That's not going to happen. Without dissent, we fail to understand the opposing perspective. My statement, in retrospect, probably was not the best way to get my point across, and I can conceded that. Your rebuttal allows me to learn and to better present my opposing view in a less confrontational manner, which I will continue to strive toward. I do read opposing comments from others respectfully, and am, on occasion, swayed in some of my own thinking.

I attempt to present the opposite side of the general opinion here, in the hope that not everyone gets the idea the entire world feels the same as they do. City Paper may ban me, that is their prerogative, but you will not. Feel free to hit that report button if you have not already done so, but please, until I am banned, keep on coming back at me. I am an adult and can take it, and I appreciate the dialog, for or against, as I too will learn that not all think as I do.
