Re: “U.S. Sen. Tim Scott and Rep. Mark Sanford will hold their own local town hall meetings this weekend

Senator Tim Scott and Representative Mark Sanford,
I have called and left messages and I wanted to follow up with this communication.

I have been watching and absorbing the events as they have unfolded over the course of the last month or so and have been very concerned about the direction our nation has been taking and the international community's view as a "not-so-great nation". It's was bad enough for him to question judges decisions, even based on their ethnicity, but he clearly has something to hide because, then the unthinkable happens! President Trump unilaterally declares the media the "enemy" of the people and takes the final step of shutting out the media that refuses to allow Trump to dictate his communication without any vetting of what he says. We are in a dangerous time now and I fear, not only for the nation, but for personal safety. We can no longer be informed about what is really taking place in Washington except through our representation. We are beginning to get into a desperate situation and the subversion of the US Constitution cannot be allowed to continue.

Please take action at once to reel in this Oligarch! Now, before it is too late!

Re: “The conversation we should all be having about gun violence and firearm safety

Fair and balanced article for the most part. Respect for the second amendment has to be the foundation for any discussion regarding keeping guns out of the wrong hands. There can be uncompromising support for a constitutional right with room for situational adjustments. Justice Scalia expressed that below in his Supreme Court decision that supported the 2nd amendment but allowed room for such adjustments.

Scalia quote from DC vs Heller, majority opinion

Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited. From Blackstone through the 19th-century cases, commentators and courts routinely explained that the right was not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose. See, e.g., Sheldon, in 5 Blume 346; Rawle 123; Pomeroy 152153; Abbott333. For example, the majority of the 19th-century courts to consider the question held that prohibitions on carrying concealed weapons were lawful under the Second Amendment or state analogues. See, e.g., State v. Chandler, 5 La. Ann., at 489490; Nunn v. State, 1 Ga., at 251; see generally 2 Kent *340, n. 2; The American Students Blackstone 84, n. 11 (G. Chase ed. 1884). Although we do not undertake an exhaustive historical analysis today of the full scope of theSecond Amendment , nothing in our opinion should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.26

Re: “The conversation we should all be having about gun violence and firearm safety

I agree with Jshicke, this was unusually well balanced, something you don't seem to get from news media today. My opinion is that rights are not privileges, the only qualification needed for a federally enumerated right is citizenship in these United States of America just as the only qualification for a state enumerated right is citizenship in that state. Once you've said you must be this age or this sex or have this license or training it's no longer a right, it's a privilege. If the people of this nation want to remove the federally granted right to bear arms there is a process laid out in the constitution allowing them to do so, repeal the second amendment, which will allow the states to decide individually if they want to create a right or privilege to bear arms or outlaw them entirely. If we allow the second amendment to be turned into a privilege outside of that process then every other right we have is subject to the same denigration and we'll soon have no rights at all.

Re: “The conversation we should all be having about gun violence and firearm safety

I saw the headline and thought, 'This outta be hilarious. A liberal rag talking about gun control. Always good for a laugh.' However, I at least feel they gave equal time to BOTH sides of the issue. I was pleasantly surprised. Gun owners were not slanted to be red neck idiots with a fourth grade education. Because of this fairness, I actually read the entire article. I disagreed with many aspects, but read them with a seriousness due to this issue.

Thank You for a nice surprise and, frankly, a fair article that allows ME to make the opinion instead of trying to force feed it to me.

Re: “Strom Thurmond and Ben Tillman's legacies surfaced as Elizabeth Warren read Coretta Scott King's words in the Senate

Foghorn, this comes from sound bites they get from the biased media because they are too lazy to do research. Plus, if MSNBC says it, it has to be true

Re: “Fighting for acceptance as an Iranian/Latino American

Thank you for the post. I too am a product of love between and Iranian and Latina. My folks met in the early 70's. she thought he was Mexican (boy was she wrong). They've been married for over 45 years. My first name is Steve and last name is rooted in Arabic. Growing up in TX, everyone assumed I was Mexican. Which was partially true. As a kid, I got called "Wet Back", "Beaner" and even got called "Camel Jockey". Ignorance abound. I had a very strong Latin influence as a kid (living in TX). Less so from the Persian side, other than the food. :) It wasn't until I went to a Catholic College and had an opportunity to go to attend Friday Prayers (which was enlightening to learn about) and I also took a class on the History of Modern Iran which was eye-opening. So, education is so important. But, perhaps more important I feel... Is the question you ask. "Where are you really from"? I recently had my DNA done and found that I was quite the mix. 30% European (Spanish/Italian/Greek/ Portuguese, but snippets of European Jew, and other Eastern European countries). I'm over 33% Caucus, 14% native american, less than 5% African. Those were the main genetic roots. I think the more that we truly learn about our roots, the easier it will be to share our similarities...

Re: “Of course Donald Trump made a joke about women on stage today at Boeing

Much as I dislike Trumps personality - he seems to be the target of continual ad-hominem attacks that are blowing smoke over his political performance:

(1) Improving background checks for travelers from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Libya - has got to be a useful thing right? Apart from inconveniencing the good guys who might be travelling from those countries it will give the US time to put a decent system in place to seriously inconvenience the bad guys. The naivety of people who think that everyone from these countries must be *friendly* is amazing.

(2) ILLEGAL immigrants are people that are breaking the law. They are criminals by definition. IMHO *legal* immigrants are a good thing and boost the American economy. Trump completely supports legal migrants but is trying to prevent ILLEGALS -- the same focus as previous President. Personally, I think building a physical wall is a daft idea but putting the interests of Americans and American immigrants above those of the illegals is something else I'm amazed people are offended by.

(3) Air Force One - A million day? Wow. Various news sources are reporting that the Trump Administration has already negotiated a reduced price of over a $1Billion (which represent nearly 3 years of free flights on this plane) and there is talk of completely cancelling the second plane. Something that no other president as even considered to reduce costs. I also think that of Trump flew on his own plane -- that would be complained about as a conflict of interest. So taking every previous Presidents travel plan and reducing costs is a good thing.

Am I "appalled at the blatant hypocrisy"? No.

Do I wish then new American President was a "better orator, less orange with a better haircut and exercised less foot-in-mouth moments"? Yes. Dont we all? ;)

America has a new CEO in charge of this huge lumbering and openly corrupt political machine, so lets hope he delivers on a his election trail promises. This immigrant hopes Democracy prevails.

Re: “Of course Donald Trump made a joke about women on stage today at Boeing

And Saturday at his "Happy Place" (campaign rally with all of his friends - is he still running?), he misunderstood (must have, at least) a Fox News article about immigrants in Sweden and proclaimed to the crowd that a serious incident occurred there and they were having all kinds of problems with the immigrants. I say misunderstood, because otherwise, he outright lied in order bolster his immigration order, which is not even needed given we've suffered no terrorist attacks from immigrants of any of the 7 countries ever.

In 2014, Trump tweeted that we cannot continue to let Obama use Airforce One, at a cost of a million a day, for "politics and play". However, with three trips to Mar-O-Lago and one to a campaign rally in four weeks, Trump may also qualify for "Politics and Play" at a cool mill' a day. I know there are those that don't like facts but their President is either a pathological liar, or this President stuff is way beyond his and his cabinet's abilities.

Am I the only one who is appalled at the blatant hypocrisy in play here?

If nothing else, this "flagging" convinces me of the potency of the Confederate flag, and the need to remove it from all public places bar museums.

Re: “Protesters gather in North Charleston ahead of Trump's arrival

So how many showed up. According to reports, the Union lost by 75%. I think they spent millions trying to get in. Boo hoo. And if memory serves me correctly, right before the second election of Obama, we saw him with Putin's right hand man, whispering into his ear, with the live mike on, saying to him, when he is re-elected, he will be able to get things done a lot easier for the both of him. Gee, how easy you liberals forget...or Hillary's reset Red Button. Never in my life have I ever seen this Chicken Little hysteria. And to blame Russia for Trump winning the election? and Trump had something to do with it? That this is high treason...that you are talking about impeachment. None of you just cannot deal that you lost. U give him way too much credit. You all think he is a imbecile. So what is it? Is he stupid, or is he that smart that he could be in cahoots with Russian intelligence to win the election of Hillary, who had billions behind her and has been in gov't all her life and had entry with all the higher ups in gov't. Give me a break already.

Shouldn't the title read North Charleston assembled ? The parts are produced around the world and put together by the workers here in Charleston. Not knocking the fine work they do just trying clarify. Wouldn't want the City Paper to be accused of "fake news".
