How about changing the name to Sea Island Cream Ale? No mascotification, and honoring the locale and the people that make it up?
OH for God sake Gullah is not a proprietary term . These guys could have used the name as it is part of our lexicon and never even acknowledged the Gullah community.
This is a classic example of no good deed going unpunished. whoever has issue with this should be thankful of their efforts to help the community not fade into obscurity.

Why exactly would one want to name a beer after an ethnic group? Being a gullah native whose ancestry on Johns island goes back to the 1700's I think it's pretty dumb. It'd be like me making a beer and calling it brogue,after the people that live in the outer Banks region of North Carolina.
Where can I get some of those Gullah Grits? Oh yeah, maybe the Gullah Gourmet. Showcased by Oprah and doing business in Charleston for a generation. Good thing they got established before everyone started getting butthurt by everything anyone does or says.
Smh. Gullah Cuisine can be named such because they 'actually' cooked "Gullah" foods and the restaurant proudly displayed Gullah/Geechie artifacts. The owners are deeply rooted in that community and live a life that contains the culture everyday. The brewery could have initially done more with the education they want to share with the production of the beer. Now that they know this and how important it is to not just capitalize off it but teach at the time, I'm sure they will make necessary changes. Sounds like a good beer though. May have to try it!

They work their butts off to do the right thing. If we were more like them, we would be a hell of a lot better off. Move on to more important things!
Most people dont think of Native Americans as real people because theyve been reduced to a mascot." Had these been worded a lot/some people instead of most people I would have agreed with it. I agree most people aren't empathetic enough toward the plight of Native Americans in the past and still today, but this isn't the first time this writer has sounded dismissive of "most people". Its much easier to rant than bring real change, but I'd like to hopefully think that progress is the writers intention.
So it's ok for Gullah cuisine to use the name for "mere" food, or kids to strip my palm trees bare for sweetgrass roses, but a company that actually tries to use its product to help recognize a fading community is out of line. Give me a break.
The entire local craft beer dealio is based on a catchy name. Most of the beer isn't worth spitting out. I'll bet a hundred dollar bill that everyone involved in the naming of this beer didn't know the word "Gullah" more than 10 years ago. Gullah is a local buzzword now and it's "marketed". Not even close to understanding and being respected for what it is or means. Makes me sad. Very sad indeed

This writers satire is excellent enough to make me go buy the damn sandwiches dissect them and eat them.
Those are some seriously tasty sandwiches and for a fast food, reasonably price foray into BBQ I agree its tough to beat. That being said it is not a true BBQ experience like any of the excellent BBQ restaurants we have here.

I tasted Shrimp and Grits from both LowCountry Bistro and Queen 82 and I loved LowCountry's version and not fond of Queen 82's Version
I am appalled by the criticism of talent. I personally find Arby's unappetizing, but thanks to Mr. Waters, I might give it a try. You all need to learn to appreciate a good writer. I'm sure none of you are capable of writing an entire article on a sandwich. He writes with witty intent and unique diction. Looking forward to the article about the whopperito.
Dry rub IS NOT BBQ ! It's plain cooked meat, with some sauce on it. Sorry all of my fellow southerners, but you have to go north of the Mason Dixon for the real thing.
