Build a new road to ease traffic congestion, then allow development along the new road to undo any relief created. Genius!
This is a very real Problem...
Yet there does need to be an available resource to deal with heavily armed Criminals. But every City Police and Couty Sheriff's Department does not need a SWAT Team. For small Communities, these resources should only be available from the State Police or the National Guard. It used to be that when the Governor called out the Guard, everybody took a step back, because that meant the invocation of Martial Law, where you either complied with the no riot, no looting or get shot rule.
Martial Law meant the suspension of Civil Liberties and the Constitution in order to de-escalate a situation to where regular law enforcement can protect the public.
It was serious business!
Now, every time some idiot holes up inside his house, here come SWAT to kick in the door. What happened to just waiting him out? Or using Tear gas? Why do we need armored police to invade his home? Hostage situation? Sure. but every time?
The military philosophy is Overwhelming Force. That should be a Last resort for 99% of the Police and Sheriff Departments in this country.
Anthony, you conveniently ignore the polls taken on James Island, Johns Island, West Ashley, and the Peninsula. Everybody wants this, not just those on the barrier islands. IIRC, numbers were all in the 60-70% range. You are not "the rest of us". Your opinion is in the minority and you need to recognize that fact. The vast majority of taxpayers of Charleston County want the expressway finished. Especially when it's, for the most part, federally funded. We have to give the money back if we don't build it.
Maybe we only increase gas taxes on diesel fuel?
Anyone who thinks building the 526 extension will make traffic better is clueless. This city has ignored transportation infrastructure for decades, and will continue to suffer traffic woes for decades to come because past planning for growth was done by developers with the cooperation of the "visionary mayor."
Maybe people in Kiawah want to get to where they want to go quickly, but they made the the choice to live on a remote overbuilt barrier island. They should not expect the rest of us to subsidize them by building their express road. If they want to improve the existing roads they are welcome to contribute, instead of using their political clout to shake down the taxpayers of Charleston County.
Rand Paul is absolutely correct that Lindsey Graham helped to create ISIS. He then sent a bunch a weapons over there that got handed over to ISIS. Didn't a high ranking US trained Iraqi soldier just defect to ISIS?
This guy has literally created, armed, and trained the enemy. Why is this terrible record considered a "wealth of foreign policy experience" that would qualify him to be Sec of Defense, let alone President? Because he's experienced at failure?
Off the top of my head, here's a partial list of countries Lindsey Graham wants to bomb:
Did anyone see the face Graham was pulling on the Senate floor during Rand Pauls NSA filibuster? Completely unprofessional and disrespectful. Lindsey Graham is an angry humorless little man.
Graham will drop out before the SC primary to throw his weight behind someone with a chance of winning. He's there for Bush, right? He defends the war so Jeb doesn't have to?
The fucked up thing is that as horrifying as Graham is, he is far and away the most accomplished and reasonable GOP candidate. What a barren wasteland we inhabit.
Anyone that uses the phrase 'moral compass' has a 99% chance of being a total asshole.
Ditto for 'core values' or 'family values.'
perhaps the Black community needs to look at themselves and their Family Foundation, or lack of it. The single mother trying to raise 4 or 5 kids who all have a different father who isn't around or even cares, is doing drugs and running with the gang, and killing each other . The single mother isn't even married to any of the men who fathered their children, this is why we are seeing all this cop on black men of late, trying to keep the young black man from killing others within the community. Yes, we have some bad cops, but you don't scrap them all because of a couple bad ones. Now the Cops are not getting out of their cars today in Baltimore or other cities that have this same problem afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs.
Seems that society doesn't want law and order. the black community is about 13 % of our total population, with the young men accounting for about 4 %, the rest women , children and old men. Yet its the 4% or less that are creating all the problems within these cities, because they do drugs and kill each other because of the Gang problem, they also sell drugs to their own and do most of all the killings of their own . yet all this talk of to much military equipment being given to the local police forces ! I see a degeneration of the social Moral compass.
While it is technically regressive, it also taxes the heaviest users of the roadways in a fair way. Semis, dumptrucks, etc. would pay a significantly larger use tax for the absolute havoc they wreak on our roadways.
But I do agree that a more significant portion of other taxes should go to infrastructure.
Maybe the federal government could slow down on those unwanted tanks they are stashing in the desert and kick some to the states for road maintenance?
I think we should spend more income and property tax money on infrastructure. A gas tax is regressive. Plus we're moving to electric vehicles. We'll still need roads but we won't need gas. A gas tax will have diminishing returns.
The traffic is not entirely the fault of 526 delays.
We may reasonably blame our legislators for refusing to raise gas taxes in order to adequately fund road projects. The roads we have are small and crumbling--which is a shitty combination with a booming population and myriad geographical obstacles.
Maybe we could stop giving gargantuan tax breaks to multibillion dollar corporations that move here and destroy our roads with construction and industrial traffic?
Everyone in Chareston is by and large a supporter of completing 526. The polling showed extremely high favorability. People of Kiawah and Seabrook are like everybody else. They want to be able to get to where they are going. Traffic has been a goddamned nightmare this week. WTF?
Wow.....this author really doesn't have any original thoughts!
Interesting, Hillary developed a southern accent on her visit.
There was a time when movie trailers promoted the film without revealing much.
Jaws was one of those films. No Films since the mid 70s have ever reached the unknown surprise viewing factor of the original runs of Jaws, The Thing,Alien or The Exorcist.
There is something to be said, for less is more, when it comes to movie promotion.
“There is no way that she did not know what was going on, that women were being abused and accosted by her husband,” Jones said in an interview.
“They have both lied,” she said.
