Re: “Was ousted School District Superintendent Nancy McGinley a saint, a despot, or a victim?

First, I have never been a fan of Nancy McGinley's, but in fairness to her two things must be considered: 1- Of all of the Supers that have worked for CCSD in the last 15 years only one has left on their own the rest have been fired primarily for not kowtowing to the petty politics of the School Board. Quite a pattern. 2- Before you compare McGinley's performance to projections, be sure that those projections were actually hers. From personal experience in being involved with setting performance plans for three different schools in a 10 year period I can tell you that a large part of the goals are set as minimum acceptable levels by higher-ups. To be absolutely fair, you must know if the projections were actually McGinley's or if they were forced upon her by the School Board or the State.

She was a version of the third option ("victim"): she was a scapegoat.

Re: “Columnist: attacks on guns and God, not racism, to blame for the demise of the Southern Democrat

"Or, maybe blacks just commit more murders per capita? And maybe blacks are engaged in activities which result in lawful use of deadly force more often also? Maybe the two are even related?"

Yes, but if blacks are all violent criminals, why aren't more black on black shootings ruled justified homicides? The laws are inherently color blind but they are being applied in such a fashion that any black person who shoots another black person is probably a gang-banger and any white person who shoots a black person is justified because he had a reasonable fear that the black person might have been a gang-banger. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation for black people.

The numbers start to get tricky when you factor in economic status and domestic violence, etc but I think we can agree that a >400% difference in justifiable homicide determinations between white on black shootings and black on black shootings is beyond what should be expected of an impartial judicial system.

"Fortunately for them the victims in the Martin and Brown situations are not the ones who ended up dead"

nofaith's notion of justice:

1. Get strapped
2. Approach a random black guy walking down the street in a hoodie or basketball shorts.
3. Pick a fight
4. Defend yourself with deadly force as soon as you start losing the fight (this fear is particularly heightened in people who are carrying guns. They fear that the gun they brought to the party might be taken away and used against them, so they act prematurely.)
5. Pretend like you are the victim to the investigators
6. Convince the grand jury (if it even goes that far) you are a coward that lost control of the situation and had no other choice to save yourself. Show pictures of some faint scratches on the back of your head or a red mark that is kind of puffy as proof your life was in danger.

You guys are smart people. I don't believe any of you would stand for this if it happened to your child. What if it was your son on the playground with his Nerf gun that was shot dead in the span of 1.5 seconds after the arrival of the police car on the scene to investigate? Or who was choked to death on the sidewalk by an officer performing a headlock that was specifically banned because it too often led to people choking to death? What if that was your child?

Re: “In the Kitchen with Chef Bob Waggoner will open Fri. Dec. 26

Kinsey, I actually agree with Robert Moss in his article. I actually love low brow food and cheap eats - when done right. I take huge pleasure in finding small places with incredible chefs doing everyday eats on the cheap all over the US and in Europe. Its like a hobby and at this point, a competition with a group of my friends. Forget the big dollar - big name restaurants, we get bored with it and have been to all of them, they open with a splash and rarely maintain momentum.
Pete Wells only appears snobby at times in print - its his job, he is pretty funny normally and not a gusher - something I like in a critic. Plus he lives in Brooklyn and his wife is a brilliant conversationalist - we adore her.
Christopher - God Help Us if Guy Fieri becomes the face of the Food Network. He can not cook...at all...ever. Hes simply a paid personality and lets face it, kinda creepy. As far as Ohio, well, thats just a Charleston thing we like to do. Oh, heres Guys New Menu for y'all. http://guysamericankitchenandbar.com/

If colleges are going to have athletics, pay them, but quit pretending that they are students.

I don't think we should pay student athletes.

We should end collegiate athletics.

Not sure what being from Ohio has to do with Fieri. Unfortunately he won a competition and is slowly becoming the face of Food Network. Also he's worth over $3M whether his restaurants are successful or not.

Re: “Black Lives Matter march planned for Saturday at 2 p.m.

@Jaxx Each race kills their own race more than outside races do. This includes whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, etc. So that "blacks kill blacks" thing is a sorry attempt at the justification of killing black people.

IF you were paying attention to anything, you'd know that when citizens kill other citizens, they WILL be punished. They WILL go to jail. When a black man kills a black man, you better believe, the law firmly up his arse. When a white man kills a white man, the law is way up his ass. When a police officer kills an innocent civilian, they get a paid vacation and gold damn medal.

The only reason the tag is #BlackLivesMatter is because, while we recognize other races suffer from police brutality as well, harassment & murder by cop is disproportionately placed on the black community. This means, yes, it does happen other places, but it happens FAR more often to black people.

THAT'S the reason for #BlackLivesMatter . Anyone with half a brain could see that. Any idiot that says "Well, it makes it seem like only black people matter over everyone else," needs to stop trying to create a negative where positive progression is taking place. Some people just look for reasons to pick at things because they are instigators or lazy or ignorant.

Of course all lives matter, that's a given (DERP). When officers go to white neighborhoods and stop people walking down the street, shoot people who have no weapons, burst into peoples homes and harass & beat them, shoot their children to death (and I mean SMALL children, not almost adult teens), and bashing in the faces of people who don't bow to their every corrupt demand on a very regular and daily basis, THEN we will say #WhiteLivesMatter . Because the brutality and racism it would be disproportionately within the white community.

If this happened on a regular basis evenly across all races, then #OurLivesMatter would be a thing. But, again, because this happens more often in the black community (police getting away with excessive force/murder), this tag originated. This is not about isolated incidents, but decades of brutality.

Just because it doesn't happen in your community or directly in front of you often, doesn't mean that it does not happen. We go through this mess all the time.

Black people often get too much of the law when they are being prosecuted, but not enough of the law when it is meant to protect them.

Re: “In the Kitchen with Chef Bob Waggoner will open Fri. Dec. 26

Chef Waggoner is right. They all want to be food critics, talk about food and be on TV but know absolutely nothing-zip- zilch about cooking....just like Guy Fieri. What a big galoot Fieri is and how very very dreadful all of his restaurants are. Food education at Stouffers says it all. Plus Mr. Fieri is from Ohio. Ugh. A friend and neighbor of mine did a hilarious review on him:

Re: “Mainely Lobstah to roll into town this spring

The BEST way to determine is a restaurant is getting their seafood product locally is with the Sustainable Seafood Initiative through the SC Aquarium. Scroll down to the bottom of this link and you will see which restaurants are using sustainable product and local product: http://www.scaquarium.org/ssi/.

Sadly, there is not ONE SINGLE Shem Creek Restaurant on that list.

As far as Lobster Rolls - hell yeah, $13.95 to get my Connecticut Style roll - and make me feel like a kid back home again...bring it!

Re: “Columnist: attacks on guns and God, not racism, to blame for the demise of the Southern Democrat

I don't think it is smart to settle any differences with violence but when you attack someone, especially a cop, you should be prepared to get your ass beaten or killed. That is why you don't attack people, you never know what they are armed with or how far they are willing to go to protect themselves. Fortunately for them the victims in the Martin and Brown situations are not the ones who ended up dead although lies and misinformation will continue to be spun to attempt to criminalize them even though they went through due process and were cleared.

Re: “Black Lives Matter march planned for Saturday at 2 p.m.

@ Fishpimp a few bad apples was coined about police corruption, wrong again fish. A simple google search will give you the origin, but again selective facts is what you are all about. Grand juries don't ever indict cops, wrong again! They do when the EVIDENCE supports and indictment. What you think, or think you know and what you can prove are sometimes worlds apart.

Re: “Mainely Lobstah to roll into town this spring

I don't know all the CCP / BNP details.

However, it would be a relevant thing to know which local restaurants source locally. Shem Creek restaurants in particular should source from Shem Creek. I hope Shem Creek Bar and Grill gets their shrimp from the boats on the creek when possible (it's not always possible).
