Excellent list Chris and like you, despite all our flaws, most of whom are due to greed imo, we still are the greatest nation on earth. If only because at 315 million we are coping better than so-called "cooler" nations like France or Germany who have negligable populations and diversity by contrast.
We also give more of our blood and money to charities and crises than any other nation on earth. Have for generations. I would like to continue the latter, but put more brakes on the former. From what I understand the state dept. has plans to move into a permanent near-isolationist stance. Look at Syria..... Probably a good thing imo. TIRED of our boys and girls dying for other nations, most of whom quickly forget our largess.
Me, myself, if you don't believe in the idea of universal healthcare, then your empathy meter is permanently broken imo. I feel ashamed our gov't hasn't been able to solve this crisis. Obamacare is derided by many, hell, may not work initially, but it is a first step imo.
Re minorities and women's rights, it's clear in the light of recent events that women, particularly young women, need to revisit the importance of feminism and their ignorance and coyness re this so-called "loaded term".
And many whites need to get used to the idea that in just a few more years THEY will be the minority. Maybe that is why there is SUCH a rush to protect and grab assets in this country. Maybe that is why the Republican Party has become such a hate group, such an anachronism, such an embarrassment to many. Boys, get used to the new world order- greater participation by all colors and greater participation by women. It's a good thing, promise, so please relax. ;)
Our biggest challenge will be to restore the upward mobility my parents enjoyed but which has mostly disappeared. I fear our society will become a class one like Britain's used to be and may still be. Where you live and whether your parents have a dime or two (& quality of benefits, incl. health, etc.) determines everything- the quality of your education, upward mobility, even health. Learned recently that all college educations in Australia are financed by the gov't. Residents then repay over a number of years. Intriguing notion....
Not sure the above difficult field will ever be levelled though....
Chris Haire: would you be willing to consider your article somewhat of a "list prose-poem"?
There is no wrong answer here.
Yes, give me a moment to shed a tear for the poor neo-nazis who can't openly parade through Dachau. Such a shame. On the other hand, Germany limits the number of commercials shown during an hour of tv and allows nudity, so who exactly is winning?
I think you'll find that many of the countries that we perceive as being freer than us have placed restrictions on speech and religion that we would fine vexing if not troubling. Australia and Iceland forbid sexual explicit porn (your garden variety xxx). The UK and Germany forbid the publication of Mein Kampf. Several European states ban Scientology. Holland bans hate speech. Canada bans hate speech on the Internet. In the UK a factual report can be libelous if it injures the "guilty" party.
For me the First Amendment is the most important component of the Constitution. Our freedom to express our thoughts, however repugnant or offensive, is key to who we are. I don't think there is another nation that protects speech as much as we do.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY! WORK WILL SET YOU FREE! WHAT IS GOOD FOR THE BANKS IS GOOD FOR THE PEOPLE!
At least big business creates jobs.
ABOLISH BIG GOVERNMENT! WORSHIP BIG BUSINESS!
NoFaith- when I said that, I said that on the basis of the current legislation, that we, as a populace, have put into place through the legislators that we, as a populace voted for, and that are now trying to "reform" in terms of immigration. Clearly, at least in my perspective, they are trying to curtail immigrants from coming to America based off a false notion of "security" of our borders. Here's the reality- nothing is truly being done, the bad guys will always find a way to get in; the cartels own the borders because our drug policies suck, our entire Armed Forces will never stop illegal immigration from happening, and millions of dollars are spent on useless programs such as ObamaCare that are now costing the tax payers MUCH more than was ever budgeted, or briefed. Combine all of this into one big mess, and you have the current "state of the union". None of this will get any better until the populace realizes that big government is and never will be the answer.
CID99 - This society is far from being anti immigrant. There is a large segment that is anti - ILLEGAL immigrant which is completely different. Other than that and the faith thing you pretty much hit the nail on the head.
Can't believe I am saying this, but this is the best article you have written yet- and finally no cursing! Your intelligence finally showed through and in a respectful manner. I hope to see more well-thought out diatribes from you. As a former Soldier who can no longer support the agenda that we have taken in International policy, I believe the answer to many of the problems will start at the grass-roots level and with the polls, because, out of every freedom we do have, our voting rights are the most important. We have become a society based upon fear, and because of this we have suffered. We have become a society that is now anti-immigrant, when immigrants built this nation. We have become a society that has lost faith in God and in faith. Without faith, without God in either the Christian sense, Islamic Sense, Jewish Sense, or pagan sense, we have not basis for a foundation of proper morals or freedom. We have become nation that due to economic crisis looks to Mother government to solve its problems, when it should be us as a populace that does so. God Bless America in the sense that we need to look back at what makes America- its people, not its politicians. Its time for a re-vamp, a civil revolution, a movement that puts America back into its proper hands- the populace that makes it.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
It's a shame that many look back fondly at the Clinton years because we weren't technically at war but completely disregard the horrible genocides that occurred throughout the world. The fact that hundreds of thousands were slaughtered with machetes in Rhawanda while we debated the definition of "genocide" is hard to defend.
Most people I know think the world was a more peaceful place in the 90s and full of war ever since but the numbers prove them wrong. War related deaths by year since 2000 are estimated to be less that half that of the 90s. It can be debated that our more aggressive involvement in these conflicts has saved millions of lives. I'm not claiming that but I think many peoples perspective on these matters are skewed.
Maybe we'd be ready to answer if we knew what the question was.
After all the Mocking they have done against Him
Americans need to start thinking about what they are going to answer to God and Christ on the day of Judgment !
Or Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Holland....
By what metric are we more open and free than Canada?
USA...............it's where my apartment is.
"but we are still the most open and free society on the planet."
Two word solution to all of the above: "Qualified Franchise"
I know, I'm a fascist or racist or Nazi or satanist or all of the above. But it would work and you know it.
My sentiments exactly. Excellent article. Our people need to wake up to what's really happening with our nation. We are becoming the very monster that our nationalistic ideologists campaign against. We are Patrick Bateman who's mask of sanity is about to slip.
