I'm 64, was in Folly Beach with a friend whose mother had owned a place there and we stayed a night before and two nights after a cheap Carnival Cruise from Charleston for a place to sleep. Walking around Friday night in April we heard music and looked in...there was a woman singing with the band, and she saw us in the door, the woman I was in had a pink shirt on and she called, Hey Pink, c'mon in...we hesitated, she reitterated and we came in. GREAT MUSIC and $1.50 beers. We came back the next night. We were there again Saturday and I found it was a social club so Friday I paid the dollar to join. I LOVE THE PLACE! I'm from NYC. I'd kill for a place with great music, no cover, $1.50 beers! Only wish there was no smoking, but its a small price to pay.
As a Citadel cadet from 1961 to 1965 I spent many happy hours eating and hanging out at the Piggy Park on Rutledge Avenue. Politics aside, Maurice Bessinger's barbecue is the best.
I grew up on Folly Beach during the 60's and 70's. As a teenager I remember when it first opened and it has been there every since i can remember. It is where we wnet on prom night after the prom and while I have not been there in a few years I am sure it has not changed. The people were and and always will be friendly and it is a comfortable atmosphere. No drama, no fighting just a good time!!!!! I hope it around forever.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN JOHNNY MAC WILL BE PLAYING AND THE SAND DOLLAR AGAIN?
LAST SAT. NIGHT WAS THE FIRST TIME I WENT TO THE SAND DOLLAR. MY FRIEND AND I SAW JOHNNY MACK PLAY. I NEVER SAW HIM BEFORE BUT HEARD ALOT OF GOOD THINGS ABOUT HIM. I HAD A GREAT TIME AT THE BAR, VERY FRIENDLY STAFF SOME OF THE "LADIES" THERE NEED SOME TUNING UP ABOUT HOW THEY ACT AFTER A FEW DRINKS, BUT THE MEN THERE WERE TRUE MEN NEVER ONCE DID I EXPIERENCE A MAN TRYING TO MESS WITH ME OR MY FRIEND. WE WILL COME BACK TO SEE JOHNNY MAC AND JUST TO HANG OUT AT THE BAR!
We went to Burbages when we were little. It has always been a wonderful store. I think that is where we got the candy drops on the adding machine tape.
Been going to the dollar since I was old enough to. Follyrights is making that shit up.
To say that my nite at the Sand Dollar was anything but fantastic would be an understatement. Not only were we welcomed but, as this being our 1st trip to the South, we found that hospitality, cordiality, comaraderie, and anything along those lines were VERY apparent in the Sand Dollar. We had heard of the place from a friend and member and although we only spent 1 evening we had a blast. I didn't need to feel as if Yankee was even a word they used. We were and,are all Americans. I was appalled at the letters I read when I got home to ny. I wasn't lookin for letters, just pics of the fun time we had. Those of u who met us knew we were there for an extra special reason; We were giving an old friend a ride home after he had spent the holidays with his family in MA. Rhonda, You made us feel as if we stayed, the welcome we felt would have been extended for as long as we were there. Ya got a great personality goin on there and the work u put into this site is amazing. I plan to go over it, all the way back when time permits. Give our mutual friend a hug and a kiss from me as I may not see him for awhile. Your "club" is great and never let the close minded comments get to you.. They are are totally undeserved, but shit, ya already know that. Keep in touch. I could go on and on but I'll save some of that shit. One thing I gotta say, that sure grow those men gorgeous down there.
Not to say the women weren't equally gorgeous but I was looking that way. By the way, the man I was with wasn't my old man just a great guy, my best friend, father of my daughter, ask Kip. If we get back there to Folly we'll be at the Sand Dollar too. You can take that to the bank!!!
If this is our premier local pool hall than we are in trouble.
The tables are shot, in dire need of re-clothing and not even level.
Wow...I find the comments made by some of the writers so scary and totally different then our experience with the club. The people were warm and friendly with great music! Thankfully, I did not read this before going into the bar or I probably would not have visited. It is a great place and I feel bad for the people who seemed to have a bad experience with the bar. The people I met at the bar, one of the owners and the bartenders, were very nice. I, and my friends, are looking forward to returning to the bar in the near future. I am deeply surprised by the comment about "racism". I despise racism and would not tolerate it. I did not see it in our one visit to the bar and hopefully never will experience it. Hopefully, you will give it another chance. Best of luck.
I find follyrights post from May 23 very hard to believe. I have been happily visiting the Sand Dollar for 13 years and I have seen blacks, whites, Asians, Hispanics and others enjoying themselves and each other in the Dollar. The place is loose, that's one of the reasons I love it, but if anybody gets close to being violent, more than one bouncer is going to show them the sidewalk very quickly. The lovely ladies behind the bar know when to cut somebody off and they mean business when they say no. Most of the clientele are not bikers. On a good weekend night when a good band is playing, you probably won't find a more diverse crowd anywhere in the Charleston area. Smokey and loud with lots of soul.
D J moomoo is the best all-a-round DJ!!!!!Nuff Respect!!!!!
Let's see, three weeks ago while I was checking out the local scene in Folly with some friends, we decided to check out this "social club". Before we even crossed over Ashley we noticed a slightly overweight, well used prop, flashing her "fun parts" as well as "business parts" on the street corner in an effort to entice people, (aka men) to enter the establishment. When our group tried to enter, the she immediately came around to tell the bouncer not to let us in... I look at the bouncer questionly so he explained that she happened to be the current "girlfriend" (my word, not his. His word, while accurate, is not appropriate for print) of the owner and she didn't like other women that could threathen her position, so the men in our group could join but neither I, nor my girlfriends were welcome. Ok, fine. Between Snapper Jacks and Lazos, I was very happy with the choices of bars and let it go. ....until last weekend.
We decided to walk out on the pier and while passing this social club, we watched as an apparent member tried to enter with a friend. He was stopped at the door and told he was welcome, but under no circumstances was his friend... He had made the mistake of trying to hang out with a BLACK man. I don't mind being denied entry into a social club, but I do have a problem with racism being promoted under the guise of "social club".
I do realize that in SC that this post could actually be considered advertisement for some, but I am hoping to reach the people more like me - (I could find more valid reasons to hate someone or bar them entry than skin color). There are plenty of places to party and have fun in Folly Beach than this crude, racist establishment. I don't care if you really are "just a biker", if you patronize this place, you are promoting racism.
Hyams is without a doubt the best nursery in the tri-county area and probably the state. It has a level of customer service that is incomparable. Walking into the flower area is like entering gardening paradise. It is always fully stocked and the sales people are so friendly and full of information.
The store is also lovely and lots of fun and pretty things to buy for the garden. I love Hyams so much that I will get in the car and drive from Mt.Pleasant without even bothering to go to our local nursery which has proven to be such a disappointment time and time again that I know to head to Hyams.
I look forward to "joining" during my next visit to Folly Beach.
