Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

Cuff is an OG, Mt. Pleasant broadie kai. I remember when he used to have Dogtown and Z-Boys hair. Real cool and sincere guy and accomplished young surfer. Kudos to the City Paper for including the f bombs, making him sound like Corey Worthington. Why all the harsh comments on this story; a lot of people sound like power lifters and not surfers, here.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

no one owns the washout especially a Mt. P boy that thinks he does. A good surfer can spot a novice and paddle around for position and not get behind them when paddling out. Never have and never will tolerate a bully with a big mouth yelling at some young boy or girl who can't yell back. Sure a beginner can move off the peak on the very few great day's in which they usually do. But don't yell and scare some young kid trying to enjoy the sport of surfing. Talent and style go a long way over an aggressive loud mouth.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

That's some funny shit, a Mt. P boy claiming the washout. Back in the day he'd get chased out of the water just for coming across the bridge. Careful who you bark at out there, young man, you may just get sent back to Bert's with your tail between your legs. You think we know who you are, but do you know who we are?

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

Hahaha this if fucking hilarious. I'm not surfer, and don't care what newbies do or don't do, but I know Cuff and his mom :). Good people. The f-bombs make hims sound like a douche LOL. But he's genuinely a super nice dude. I'm sure that he would sound less douchie in the context of his entire interview.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

I love how people are judging Cuff when they don't even know him. I also believe his comments were taken out of context. Cuff is a really nice guy, and to the JI Local who's been surfing the washout for 35 years, you should know who Cuff is. I met Cuff at the Washout, where I didn't go to surf until I knew I could do something other than drop in and ride the whitewater straight to shore. Anyone who is serious about becoming a surfer and part of the surfing community would never go to the washout to learn to surf. Cuff is an EXCELLENT surfer and a really nice guy as well. Sometimes the more experienced surfers get a little upset when there's a bunch of kooks floating on the inside, dropping in on great waves even after being hooted at, and causing potential danger for more than just themselves. I don't like yelling at people, but had a guy drop in on my last year and put a giant gash in the rail of my board. Because I'm a girl, he didn't listen when I hooted him from dropping into the wave that I was already riding. I made him give me money to buy some epoxy to fix my board, which he didn't like but agreed to after some of the others in the water told him he was totally in the wrong (he paddled back out bad-mouthing me). Anyway, people who don't know what they're doing should not surf the washout (or the pier, for that matter). Wait until you've got some experience and then you could find yourself a nice community to be a part of, if that's what you want. I felt it in my soul when I was learning, so I made sure to do everything the right way, including not surfing the washout until I knew I wouldn't kook out in front of everyone.

I also have to say, Good job, Kristin! I'm glad they picked you to interview - you're a great surf sister!!

I've been to every city in Mexico. I came across an unclaimed piece of meat in Baja, turned out to be Rosie. I guessed he picked a knife fight with somebody better. Found one of your passports to Sumatra, I missed you by about a week at Fiji. But, I knew you wouldn't miss the fifty year storm, Bodhi.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

Look at the picture! I don't see a kook! He is very experienced, polished surfer. I have seen beginners paddle out during hurricane swells at the Washout, floundering in the lineups while imposing a threat of physical harm to themselves and to others. His comments were probably taken out ot context. Just take both of their advice and go somewhere else to learn to surf and then think of coming to the Washout where its bigger than anywhere else on the beach. We all have had to pay our dues, even us surfers that have been surfing 35 years or more. We all are looking for RESPECT is all.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

@JI local: If you've surfed the washout for 35 years, then you remember when there was a pecking order, with respect given to those at the top. This kid may come off as a douche with the way he gets his message across, but his point is valid. My guess is you've never been anywhere near the top of said pecking order, hence the aggression.

You want to grind someone's ass into the sand? Sounds weird.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

what a punk ass! I've been surfing the washout for 35 years, I wish that this lame ass would yell at someone in front of me so that I could grind his ass and face into the sand in front of his 'boy's'. Ryan Overhiser should be ashamed for writing this article. Nothing worse than a wanna be with a loud mouth on 2-3 ft Folly shore break surf. This Mt. P boy needs an old fashioned James Island style ass whipping in which I would be more than happy to give.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

Cuff speaks the truth. Don't go to the most crowded spot on the beach to learn. Go somewhere else to learn and go to Washout once you can at least CONTROL YOURSELF AND YOUR BOARD. Otherwise you might get your ass r.un over by a kayak.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

for those of you butchering cuff's comments, take it easy. you probably don't know him or don't surf at the washout. those of us that do know him know that he is a cool guy and one of the best surfer's out there. his comments were most likely taken out of context by the writer in order to emphasize his passion for surfing and the dangers involved by those who don't know what they're doing. if you come to the washout and are respectful and knowledgeable you can catch waves along with everyone else. cuff will probably be the guy in the lineup giving you a high five after a good barrel (during one of the four days of the year when we actually get barrels).

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

Gleaton is right, if you come to the washout on a good day just to go straight, poke your butt out, and flail your arms everywhere; you can go down the beach and do the same thing and get the same satisfaction. i like Gleaton's attitude. there needs to be more of this same exposure so word is out to all the beginners that you can get your fix in down the beach. if you are ditching your board while paddling out because you can't duck dive, you are a fucking barney and you deserve to be yelled at.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

"The washout is a place for serious, aggressive surfing" - well, not really. It's just overcrowded with little boys with out-sized egos, and the requisite attitude to match. The best thing about the place is that it attracts make believe adolescent heroes like a magnet, so the better spots are less populated with the mouthy types like Gleaton.

It's a safe bet that anyone who says "those of us who surf the washout on the regs" is a kook.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

Gleaton obviously has insecurities that should be addressed and ironically just made himself a target for those of us who surf folly on a regular basis. Harassment and tool baggery from dick skin like this should be reported. That's the last guy surfers need talking to magazines-- in no way does he represent those of us who surf the washout on the regs...

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

you morons watch point break way too much. and it doesnt matter where you go on folly (or sc for that matter) there are no good waves. Gleaton probably still lives at home with his mom, so next time she drops him off at the washout make sure all you newbies stay out of his way, he's an 'extreme' professional riding monsters out there. this is is the sorta stuff legends are made of, youre the you are the epitome of a douche bag, equal to the guy who wears croakies and boat shoes and has never stepped foot on a dock. you might as well be surfing the point break on lake placid...just make sure your mom knows where to pick you up.

Re: “Folly Beach surfers hit the Washout in search of a swell time

There are miles of beachbreak on Folly and IOP where you'll find friendly folks who are happy to share their love of surfing. This includes the Washout - not every good surfer acts like Lance Burkart - but take the point that it's not the place to learn to surf. Until you know what you're doing and know the rules of the lineup you're a danger to yourself and others in a crowd.
