Re: “Tim Scott's inspirational story is far from inspirational

Tell us, historian Gary Waggoner, how LBJ (LeBron James) caused poverty in minority communities? I love facts.

Re: “Tim Scott's inspirational story is far from inspirational

What the author of this piece fails to realize is that if his mother DID work two 8 hour jobs, surely she was being paid more than $15 per hour that the leftists want. His point about minimum wage is moot. Those want to feel good but have never run a business to discern the impact of higher wages on a business owner make (horrible word) profits to stay open and keep employing people.
Also, you need to study history of WHY we have more poverty in minority communities. Look no further than LBJ. If you don't know those initials, then shut the eff up and learn something about history more than when his highness came into office. His great society gave more money to women who had more babies as long as NO MAN lived in the home. It's one big reason why the unwed birthrate in the black community is over 70%. Don't call me racists for providing the F A C T S. They are what they are.

And why no mention of the fact the the Democratic Party eschews helping these same folks in need, and rarely delivering on any of their promises? The definition of hypocritical.

Re: “Tim Scott's inspirational story is far from inspirational

So basically, he got help from a conservative man and organization that is vilified by the left as having no compassion for the needy. And their family was basically left to fend for themselves by the liberal powers that be. Not sure why the hatchet job on Scott here. This article is basically an advertisement for conservatism, although there's no doubt that wasn't the author's intention.

Enough leading questions from adults in authority positions to children will get at least shades of the desired replies. That's all that some people need though.

I'd like to see Ravenel address the "falling into the pool with his baby" part of this allegation.

I'm not convinced Little Teck has the management skills or experience. Maybe he'll show me otherwise.

Re: “Tim Scott's inspirational story is far from inspirational

For any of you who believe that Tim Scott's story is proof that govt shouldn't assist the poor: I'd like to know if you've personally done what Scott's mentor did, or even if you know anyone who's given that much effort to an individual poor person. Until there are enough citizens to privately lift every child out of poverty, our tax dollars will have to make the effort.

Re: “Tim Scott's inspirational story is far from inspirational

"I do not like Tim Scott at all. To me he is an UNCLE TOM and a phony"

In Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Tom is a Kentucky slave who is being taken to New Orleans to be sold when he saves a white girl from drowning named Eva St. Claire. Eva's family buys Tom and he and the girl read the Bible together. Eva's family helps Tom contact his wife and family who are still slaves in Kentucky. Tom loves his white masters for all they have done for him. Then Eva suddenly dies. And the wicked mother sells Tom to an evil plantation owner named Legree. The slaves on Legree's plantation are planning to run away but Tom stays because he is loyal. Legree viciously whips Tom to death to get him to say where the other slaves have run off and Tom is such a good Christian that he forgives Legree for the whipping before he dies.

Now, while there are certainly a lot circumstantial similarities between Uncle Tom and the Tim Scott story of inspiration, I think you forget one point. Uncle Tom was loyal to both his white masters and his fellow slaves. Tim Scott is only loyal to his Republican masters. Calling Tim Scott an Uncle Tom is therefore a character assassination of Uncle Tom.

Re: “Tim Scott's inspirational story is far from inspirational

You missed the point. Mrs. Scott was busting her butt at jobs to take care of her sons, while instilling in them a conviction that you must get your self out of poverty. You can not be pulled from poverty. All the social programs and entitlements in the world cannot teach that lesson. And if Mrs. Scott was paid a mandatory $15 an hour, she may not have had any jobs and then what lesson would she be teaching her son, the Senator for South Carolina.

Re: “Tim Scott's inspirational story is far from inspirational

Chris, what is your story?.....did you come from a poor, broken, home?
Or were you "free-rided"... go to school or else?
Regardless, it didn't work.

Instead of demeaning a poor kid's "escape" from a life in welfare, regardless of how, you should be telling them, all of them, there is hope..... from many directions/sources.

Do you also find Dr Ben Carson, Clarence Thomas (SCOTUS) and Thomas Sowell "uninspirational?

I came from a poor broken home. With an above average IQ I spent my sophomore and junior years destroying my record, failing on purpose to get even. My big break came from the guidance of a teacher. But who cares. It doesn't matter that I had a teacher who cared or that Tim Scott stumbled into a mentor who cared.

What matters is that there ARE people who care, regardless of where you find them or they find you.

THAT is what you should be promoting instead of racist hate.

YOU TOO CAN ESCAPE... to a vibrant , productive, life.
THAT is the message.

Yes, Chris, even you!
Take my advice. Run like hell away from that rag you are stuck in.

We need John Tecklenburg's experience in the business, non-profit and municipal government world. Lest we not forget he has served as owner and manager of several businesses, President of the now One80 place when it was Crisis Ministries, and Charleston's Director of Economic Development during it's economic rise.

This isn't journalism, its liberalism...a poorly written "hate crime" against any minority that dares to step outside the narrow walls of progressive liberalism.

Dick Elliott is a successful manager who was fundraising for a much shorter period. Age is not an issue. At his age Riley could easily serve another term.

Re: “Republicans sweep statewide offices in S.C.

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!, as Gomer used to say. Completely unexpected outcome, eh what.

Too bad. The South is now what it used to be in reverse. At one time, when the segregationist Old Democratic Party of the South held sway, you could run a yellow dog on the Democratic ticket and still win. Now you can run a yellow dog on the Republican ticket and win. The party of Lincoln is no more. The south is solid once again. Solid and sterile and unchanging. Old times there are not forgotten; look away. Yeah, I'm looking away.
