Re: “Stegelin: Changing scenery at CofC

Ursus, uh-huh suuuurrrrre. Thats why instead of the flag, he distributed and carried the sauce in his stores until 2009 when he closed. Making sure the nasty old bigot had some money in his old age. Nothing says "Free Speech" like barbeque sauce. Are you angling for Ned Hills position - because you are def in the running?
Stegelin- funny comic and pretty close to fact.

Re: “Stegelin: Changing scenery at CofC

@culinarykid Do you think you're 'breaking news' about Maurice? Smart people know that was about the defense of Free Speech.

@ city paper A couple of stick men would be better than these adolescent 'comics' that y'all print from this guy. I have some advice for the 'artist'.

Re: “Stegelin: Changing scenery at CofC

@dp4 and assuming that your assertion (which is based on... what, exactly?) is true, wtf kind of difference would that make to anything at all?

The past several presidents have been conservative, most (if not all) the potential candidates were conservative, and the expectation was always that the eventual hire was going to be conservative.

How long have you been in South Carolina? This was never a quest to get a liberal leader in place - that just doesn't happen here, if you're new to the state, so you can get off the 'help help we're being oppressed' train. That one hasn't actually run in this state... ever... for conservative white dudes.

Re: “Stegelin: Changing scenery at CofC

The fact that CofC is a liberal arts school is irrelevant in relation to the fact that many, if not most of the faculty, administrators and student population are liberal thinking in their political views. That fact is undeniable.

Re: “Stegelin: Changing scenery at CofC

Stegelin, pretty accurate. Y'all left out that bottle of his good buddy Maurice Bessinger's barbeque sauce he probably was carrying. His store sure stocked enough of it to last a lifetime.

Re: “Stegelin: Changing scenery at CofC

The funny thing is many, many conservatives think the "liberal" in "liberal arts" ACTUALLY DOES EXACTLY mean "progressive-liberal-US political doctrine" rather than the "classical arts" use of the term.

I wonder what would would happen if we told them about how their current political ideology is rooted in what political scientists and economists call "classical liberalism" ... we'd see some heads explode.

Re: “Stegelin: Political ads that scream the obvious

Wasn't the 10th amendment basically overturned by the 14th and 17th? Because I'm thinking that there were a whole lot of things that couldn't be done after those that could be done before (like slavery as the largest example).

Re: “Stegelin: Political ads that scream the obvious

All political ads are for someone or against someone. The discerning voter will research who is on their side and who isn't! Political yahoos cry loss of freedom, supporting the Constitution, 2nd, 4th and 10th Amendment, limiting government intrusion, free enterprise to help strengthen families. So tell me how interfering with a woman right to choose what will happen to her body will strengthen families? How will repeated blocking of voter access improve freedoms? Will performing background checks on gun buyers inhibit their ability to get guns? Who should have authority to intervene when polluters damage rivers and waterways, grounds, soils and backyards? Should the state and federal government have some say over Big Oil, Gas and Coal and hold them liable for any damages incurred? How will communities get rectification without state or federal governmental intervention to control the mega-corporations when they create instances like Love Canal, the Brio Site, the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, the coal chemical spilled into the Elk River in West Virginia and the 2013 Mayflower oil spill occurred on March 29, 2013, when an ExxonMobil pipeline carrying Canadian Wabasca heavy crude from the Athabasca oil sands ruptured in Mayflower, Arkansas, about 25 miles northwest of Little Rock? What recourse does the average person on the street have against huge corporations who have mega-dollar lawyers and accountants on their side? What could go wrong?

Re: “Stegelin: Sweeping ethics reform

Ethics reform will truly be here when bribing a politician results in the death penalty for BOTH parties to the transaction.

Re: “Stegelin: Gun nuts and beer nuts

Yes, lets ignore the fact that you cannot drink alcohol and carry a firearm. Lets ignore the fact that 'brandishing a firearm in public is illegal. No, lets make a silly cartoon that plays on the public fear of those who have received training and been thru a background check yet are somehow all redneck idiots who perform sexual acts with their favorite glock. Yes, it is soooo funny.

Re: “Stegelin: Improved healthcare.gov? Now what?

While I wouldn't classify General Powell as a flaming liberal he is hardly aligned with the Republican party anymore. Medicare and the VA have such stellar records to use as a model, just like the single payer systems in the civilized world where there is no way you would be able to do like my wife did today which was walk into the doctor's office at 8 and be out of there before 9 with two scrips in hand.
