@ursus That's your decision and your loss. (Apparently you know more than the Pulitzer Prize committee, which gave a Pulitzer to "Maus". And more than all the critics who said "Fun Home" was one of the best books of the year/decade it was published in.)
Of course McConnell is perfect for the job. And, highly qualified I might add. CofC is a government school that now has a government-minded president.
I embrace climate diversity; it's the pc thing to do, right?
@ rowe Ms. Bechdel's private business is her own business. I don't read comic books.
Sounds like her ex was the smart one... stuck with her til she went off the deep end with the stray cats. "I don't really like people" she says.... surprise surprise. And she clearly doesn't care about wildlife either - her cats torture and kill untold numbers of birds, reptiles, and small mammals annually... her feral cats are the be-all end-all of her existence, and nothing else matters. What a pitiful sad wasted life.
There is an additional larger issue here which I see few talking about: Corporate influence on what the C of C and MUSC are doing. The entire conversation about merger has been driven by an agenda created by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and the large corporations in Charleston. The Chamber and their leaders are advocating this based on results which were supported and participated in by C of C marketing and executive leaders. This is the way they want to go. But as it has been pointed out, is that the way the faculty wants to go? Is it a direction that will be funded? While it may be true that research universities lead to increased ability for local residents to fill (technology) jobs and increased entrepreneurial activity and start-ups established, the critical question is where is the money to come from? And the answer to that is taxes, Foundation donations, corporate donations. While donations can be easily made by those entities, taxes are not freely made. They are legislated and there is no escape from paying them (for the majority.)
There is a House of Cards level of machination which has been taking place. Chamber + C of C leaders + Reps Stavrinakis and Merrill + City of Charleston who all determined that if they pushed to full merger (via the legislation filed by State Reps.) there would be violent reaction against...then they would pull back, suggest McConnell as President, and then McConnell would push the granting of degrees through collaboration and everyone would heave a sigh of relief...and those pushing for the new, higher degree granting programs would get what they wanted with McConnell at the helm to make sure it happened.
@ursus Well, the latter part of your definition would exclude Alison Bechdel.
Out of curiosity, have you read "Fun Home"? It seems an awful lot of the people who are willing to dismiss it haven't.
@culinarykid so you think Glenn is a 'secret segregationist'?
Wrong Ursus, I do not like bigotry in any color, shape or form. Supporting Free Speech and the confederate flag and what it stood for is one thing, my family fought for the confederacy - but we do not blare it from the rooftops - supporting ass backwards Maurice Bessinger and what that moron stood for is another. As kids we used to make fun of Maurice - all of us did, he was a joke and a embarrassment to all of us in the State of SC for years. The older he got - the worse he became. No....McConnell definitely supported Bessinger and his belief of segregation or he would of never proudly carried, advertised, promoted and distributed Bigot Bessingers products up until he closed in 2009 like he did. Why on earth, as a politician, would anybody be stupid enough to do that.....unless it was a big nod nod wink wink to all the other good old boys to show his support for his buddy Maurice.
Plus I think Rodney Scott kicks Maurice Bessingers Piggy Park ass when it comes to que.
@ troll slayer Life begins at AROUSAL!
This was on msnbc? Then nothing to worry about then because only 11 people saw it.
@ libertine Losing side......REALLY?
THE CAUSE is being VINDICATED in our own time!
“The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert itself, though it may be at another time and in another form.”

@ rowe yes comics CAN be literature but ONLY if you're over 35 and have never touched an actual woman.
The Citadel will NEVER be included or take part in ANY merger. Unlike CoC the Cadets ACTUALLY HAVE POWER AND CLOUT in Columbia.
@culinarykid Do you think you're 'breaking news' about Maurice? Smart people know that was about the defense of Free Speech.
@ city paper A couple of stick men would be better than these adolescent 'comics' that y'all print from this guy. I have some advice for the 'artist'.
@ culinarykid 'REALITY CHECK' Maurice had THE BEST SAUCE! That was about the FIRST AMENDMENT you simple shit. If Glenn had been defending a gangsta rappers right to call us crackers, and women bitches and ho's you would have been all for it. Should we just outlaw all speech you don't like?
This radio talk show (so-called) host should take light of the fact that "SENATOR" McConnell is just that,a U.S.senator & a lot more & should be treated as such. The people who oppose him & the decision of the board should concentrate there efforts on the South Carolina State college,(ie: "NAACP"). They are having a host of problems from students getting murdered on campus & faculty & board members being brought up on embezzling charges. I think that the College of Charleston is above reproach. Get your act together "msnbc". When you get ex- senator (black) Democrat Robert Ford standing up for a person who believes in the "Confederacy" & South Carolina's heritage, that says a lot about this great Carolinian. Glen has an exceptional resume & is qualified to be a lot of things. He could even do a better job than "you-know-who".
Kelly Lax...yes..look back and look at house bill 4632 and S1021. Extreme two different schools respectfully. Now it is Charleston University..already one in West Virginia! ursus...Citadel has engineering already which Merrill and Starv. said was needed in the Charleston area..logistics, transportation. That would be Civil Engineers..why are they not tapping into that instead of starting a new school which already has a name...it is really screwy. If you look at USC Beaufort, their goals are to do more research so...common sense? That being said, I am a conservative but agree on principle with many people on both sides. Principles on this are not adding up and that is what people need to focus on...it is not about race/sex etc. This is about power. Look at the facts and begin to understand..whether or not I agree McConnell would be good for CofC. He did not make the final group. Low and behold he is now the President. That is wrong. The trustees should definitely revisit for the good of CofC.
to clary - they always are
"This argument is history" - Yes, yes it is. RECENT history, McConnell stocked and sold Bessinger's sauce right up until he closed the store in 2009. He loved that pointy headed bigot. Thats 5 years ago not 50 or 100. Still fresh enough to be pretty offensive to many in the black community.
"Reality Check" - What Mat said.
