Re: “Park Café brings farm-to-table sophistication to Hampton Park

Just because Paris has a significant immigrant population doesn't mean it is any less French. It's the epicenter of their culture.

And it's definitely not the gastronomic capital of the world. Maybe 15 years ago.

"he wasn't the person you and everybody else make him out to be"

He was a murderer. No debating that.

Re: “The Other Spoleto

I worked for the Festival in 1980 and spent time around Menotti and Festival leaders. Menotti was a talented man. He was also a spoiled, self-centered man of vision. He could be petulant, demanding, gentle, incredible when directing singers, grumble when discussing Italian politics, and was often typified "the histrionic Italian" of caricatures.

In the mid 1950s Menotti had many extremely talented artist/friends who were out of work. He felt that establishing a festival in Europe would allow these artists to find work, recognition and launch major careers. It was always his vision to feature young, just-breaking artists. Through the Italian festival, Menotti did launch many fine careers. That is history. One only needs to read the bios of the artists who gained their start there in Italy and here in the US. Among the US festival's artistic debuts to remember: Yo Yo Ma. On the stage at The Dock Street. And of Renee Fleming in The Marriage of Figaro also at "The Dock."

The Maestro always wanted an audience. He was accustomed to being in the spotlight and needed to feel central to the direction of the festival. He struggled with funding and the concept that the US festival had to pay its own way. In Italy, the government funds much of the festival. In the USA, some funding is provided by government, but Spoleto Festival USA is a product, something which I believe Menotti was not comfortable with. He was an "art for art's sake" man. And in the US, the arts must be self-funding.

Re: “Kelly and Matt Owen tried their hand at self-publishing and started a publishing biz along the way

In the past authors had no control, now they can have all the control. Publishing has undergone a revolution. Unfortunately, booksellers (other than Amazon) still kowtow to the mega-publishing houses and small press titles must fight for every ounce of awareness and shelf space. It's great that Matt is a publicist, because he can work immediately for Kelly's promotion, without having to shell out thousands of dollars or have Kelly use all her time to promote it herself.

Many can write. Many can publish. But not all can promote and gain sales. And in the end, that is what authors want.

Umm, your "good person" opened fire on and killed a police officer.
Kind of begs the question, just what kind of person are you?

Re: “Atlantic Beach once thrived as S.C.'s only black-friendly beach, now home to dreaded Black Bike Week

To Chrishaire:

The account you cited, from the Myrtle Beach Sun News Online, is entirely from testimony by the blacks in the case. Gee, think they might lie, like Michael Brown's buddy in Ferguson, Missouri did? The account I read and accurately cited was from the Myrtle Beach Sun News.

Law enforcement tight lipped? Obviously CP missed Sheriff Cannon's press conference.

Re: “Scratch Taco Boutique closes 11 months after opening

I'm surprised it made it this long. With the Boulevard right there (and the associated masses of young professionals within walking distance) just give the people a fun place to hang out with cheap drinks and success will follow. But just in case they are looking for food ideas, the taco-fad is already over....arepas are really what we need.

I'm a descendant of Emanuel Dukes's brother, Willie Dukes. Our family has always BBQed our own hogs for holidays. I guess the force is strong with us!

Re: “Dead shooting suspect had history of fights and cop complaints

neighbor below says we shouldn't have guns at home. I guess he wouldn't mind giving up his free speech at home or his right to unlawful search and seizures at home. I don't think he is going to like one day if an armed criminal breaks into his home and he tries to fend him off with a vacuum cleaner. Maybe Oswald shouldn't have a gun because of his criminal behavior but I've never done anything, so I guess I should grouped in with this guy.

Good article. Very interesting and the history of Atlantic was excellent. The statement that "too much for their "white" frail psyches to handle is editorializing at best and takes away from the reporters credibility. Still an excellent piece.

Re: “West Ashley apartment shooting: A timeline

Wow. I can't believe no one has done a timeline like this yet. I guess going old school, getting out and knocking on some doors, still works in the twitterverse era. Looks like there's still a mysterious block of time full of popping noises to figure out. I wonder what that's all about.

Re: “Haley to Sheheen: I'll see your one dead officer and raise you five dead children

Just so we're all clear on this, Sheheen's statement arrived at 8:33 am, two calendar days after the West Ashley shooting. Haley's statement on the WA shooting — and with the addition of the tragic deaths of five children — was issued at 12:18 pm that same day. I don't know about you, but to me that speaks volumes.

If a newspaper like ours that is going to press on Tuesday with a full week's worth of material while wrapping up a speciality publication at the same time, can not only craft a letter from the editor and two articles on the day after the shooting, then surely Haley and Sheheen, who have far bigger staffs than ours, can put out a statement the next day.

Also, I would not expect Sheheen or Haley to comment on either one of these situations for that matter, just as I don't expect Obama to comment on Ray Fucking Rice, the Washington Redskins, and Trayvon Martin. I don't recall either Haley or Sheheen issuing a statement when Clint Seymour was sucker punched and died on King Street. I mean, I get that a law enforcement officer died, and that's a special circumstance, and that Haley being the highest officer in the state may want to comment. Sheheen, not so much. It would be interesting to see which Charleston Statehouse officials issued statements and which did not. That would be telling.

Re: “Kelly and Matt Owen tried their hand at self-publishing and started a publishing biz along the way

This is a really inspiring story! The beauty of self-publishing is that anyone can do it, however I don’t think people really know how to go about it, what to look out for, or what questions to ask. But soaking up any info that’s out there, especially from other’s experiences and hearing other people's stories, is so helpful! There is a book out called “Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook” by Helen Sedwick. Her website, http://www.helensedwick.com has a lot of really helpful info along with more about her and the book. It’s definitely a book worth checking out for self-publishers!
