Re: “New library service gives free digital access to 150-plus magazines

No Harper's or The Baffler.

Fie on this! A madness!

Re: “Hugh Howey explains why he removed controversial blog post

" It has been called misogynist; I was only being rude to an individual who was being rude to me."

Howey's apology would be a lot more convincing if, in his post — which did come across like a shrieking screed — he hadn't focused so much on the woman's youth, appearance and demeanor and all kinds of other irrelevant garbage. His rant, penned so many months after the event in question, made it crystal clear he would never brook a challenge to his promotional 'expertise' from someone he obviously despised for being younger, for not conforming to his ideas of beauty, for not being as successful as he is, and most of all, for being female. His apology acknowledges none of this, so it appears that his self-awareness is limited when it comes to the breadth and scope of his misogyny. It isn't enough to write strong fictional female characters; any male writer with a skill for marketing has the sense to do that. It's in these real life moments of reactionary impulsiveness that a man has to demonstrate a little self-awareness and find a better way of expressing himself.

In addition to that, by showing such poor judgment, Howey completely validated the woman's arguments. He needs a skilled professional to handle his PR and marketing.

There's only ever been one Pink House in my life.

Re: “Pink House Art Gallery to close this month

Still get a little confused about the age of some of the houses downtown despite the numerous times the city has been reportedly destroyed by war, hurricanes, fires and earthquakes. Decimated is one thing. But destroyed?

Re: “TEDxCharleston Opens Audience Application

I like the part where I apply for the right to give you my money.

I enjoy the TED talks, but this thing doesn't seem worth the hassle.

Re: “TEDxCharleston Opens Audience Application

"All attendees must apply to be invited." (Just like Greek life in College!)

"In curating our audience, we’ll look for passion and commitment, experience and attitude, eclectic variety and synchronicity, connections and serendipity." (Connections, mostly. A pork pie hat and those narrow frame glasses should cover the other stuff.)

"The 100 people in the audience at TEDxCharleston on May 15, 2013 will be a diverse gathering of extraordinary individuals who are:
•people who connect people
•messengers of ideas
•creative, visionary thinkers" (And $150 bucks lighter for a party of 2.)

Update: How have the audience applications been coming along?

Re: “Call for submissions, 2013 City Paper Photo Contest

Jim Langston, you must be one hell of a cheapskate. The entry monies go toward the cash prizes.

Rufus, scroll to the top of the page and read which issue it says the winners will be announced in. March 13th.

Re: “TEDxCharleston Opens Audience Application

So, there will be a scholarship available to get poor people in? Or are you not interested in class diversity?

Re: “TEDxCharleston Opens Audience Application

I wanted to address the concern re: the audience curation/application. I represent TEDxCharleston. Contrary to the concern by the above poster, our goal is to make the audience as DIVERSE as possible, not homogeneous. As a first time TED conference in Charleston we are limited to 100 attendees. By curating the audience, we can ensure both diversity as well as fairness -- so that the attendee registration isn't just on a first come first serve sign up basis. We encourage everyone who is interested in attending to apply and we look forward to an incredible, diverse event.

Re: “TEDxCharleston Opens Audience Application

I guess the re-design is nice; I'm just loathe to admit it.

You know how jarring it is when something you've been reading (analog, in this case) for a long time gets fucked with.

I shouldn't be bitching; it's not comparable to Tina Brown coming in and strap-on'ing The New Yorker, but still...

Re: “TEDxCharleston Opens Audience Application

He tweeted one of my tumblr posts, which was nice.

No one clicked the payment button, though. Cheap internet bastards.

I heard a lot of nice things about the TNR redesign, but I'm usually not interested in UI unless it's broken, then I notice the hell out of it.

Re: “TEDxCharleston Opens Audience Application

Weirdly enough, I read an article by Morozov in the Daily Beast the other day. He mentioned a time-lock safe he uses to secure his router cable so he can't use the Internet at specified parts of his day in order to get work done. I couldn't find the safe he was talking about, so I wrote him and he e-mailed back within the hour. I guess his time-lock was switched to "off".

Anyway, you're welcome for the riveting fucking story -- and thanks for the TNR link. I dislike their new design since Facebook™ helmet took over.
