I was riding around with a friend the other day and he said, "I need to get some gas". I looked, as many of us do - unconsciously and out of habit, at his gas gauge and saw that he still had some quarter of a tank or more left.
"Nonsense," he said. "We're going to go fill up."
So we drove for about forty-five minutes, through some pretty strange areas of the Lowcountry that I haven't seen yet. We passed several gas stations and I suppose at some point I must have thought that my friend was pulling some weird prank on me, but finally we pulled into a dilapidated old service station that was far off anything that could be remotely considered and secondary road.
A sign beside the ancient pump read: "Free sex to every third customer who fills up"
My friend hopped out of the truck and began pumping gas eagerly, waving to the attendant inside. "Filling up!" he shouted gleefully, despite the fact the prices were well above the market average.
When he was done, he practically ran inside. He was only gone for three or four minutes when he emerged from the door of the ramshackle old building with a somewhat defeated look on his face.
"Damn, man. They said I just missed being third. Somebody else got here twenty minutes ago...."
I let my friend ease us back onto the road and turn around to make the long and sad trip back home. I wasn't sure how to tell him my suspicions about the station and its odd form of promotional gimmick. Finally, I decided just to give it to him straight.
"Um, look. That sign? By the pump? I think it's probably a joke. You know, like there's never a third customer? You're always going to be first or second? So, um...." I trailed off, knowing that I wasn't really being helpful and that there was no way around the fact that I was basically telling my friend he was about as gullible as any fool has ever been.
He sighed. "Man, you just assume the worst of people. Why would anyone defraud the public like that? Besides, my wife's been here three times this month and won every time."
Tea party ideals are just as much of a pipe dream as utopia.
If you have to go 10mph over or more, you should have left earlier.
Going slow in the left lane sucks - but speeding is illegal. If someone's following the flow of traffic in the left lane around 70 or 75 and you blow up behind them at 90 miles per hour, YOU are the one with the problem and YOU are the biggest danger to the people around you on the road.
Music is so incredibly soothing, especially in a healthcare setting. I worked for a hospital that had a grand piano in the lobby, and it played beautiful tunes by itself, or sometimes a visitor, employee or patient would sit down and play. It was wonderful. I would love accordian music - it's lovely.
Fish, that is true but not what I was trying to explain. The left turn lanes are usually painted so that their line is behind the straight/right turn. And, as I said, it's physically impossible for the left turning vehicle to go if the way isn't clear for the right turning car - so they're is no advantage to them pulling way up....
Although I will concede, like Pogo above, that a lot of residential roads (and most roads into residential areas off main roads) are horrible with respect to sight lines...
But I'm also talking about areas like Anna Knapp onto Mathis Ferry here in Mt P, and almost every intersection on that side of 17 on Frontage Rd.
Mat, the driver attempting to make a right turn does not have the right to pull forward and block the view of the person in the left lane who needs to see traffic coming from both right and left. Whomever arrived at the intersection first has the right to the clear view of both lanes of traffic.
I was actually thinking of posting something similar to this.
When I come up to almost any non-traffic light intersection around here and am trying to turn right, I am invariably joined by someone who pulls up *past me* into the left turn lane, despite the fact that most left turn lane lines are painted *behind* the straight/right lane line.
The reason for this is to give traffic in the perpendicular lane enough room to make their left turns, but there's another more subtle reason....
If I'm trying to turn right and you're trying to turn left, you absolutely have to at least wait until I am clear to turn because you definitely aren't making a left turn if my right turn isn't clear (think about it, you're crossing a lane to get where you're going and I'm not). So, if you pull up past me all you are doing is *preventing another driver from seeing the only lane that matters to them*. You aren't getting out any faster by doing this but you are creating a potential hazard for me and for drivers turning left onto the road we're sitting on.
So, left turn people, back up to your line and realize that big government liberal road planners probably know something you don't about how traffic works.
I feel your pain. I drive a small car and this frequently happens to me too. Another pet peeve of mine is neighborhood associations who put up signs or pillars right at the entrance to their neighborhoods which block my view of oncoming traffic. The same goes for homeowners who plant bushes right at corners. I think there is a law that states these bushes must be trimmed so as not to obstruct a drivers view but I doubt that it is ever enforced.
The other woman probably does not wish to stir up the pot any further. That is why she has not called you. Don't wait around, and keep and eye on your husband, because most of these types DO IT MORE THAN ONCE, with more than one other person. I feel for you. Get rid of his ass.
Like said "brotha" would know how to pronounce half of the words in that post anyway. Try re-wording it as follows: Bibbity, boobity, boobity, boobity, bibbity, I ain't know, boobity, bibbity, boobity.
Wow! So glad to hear you and everyone else is ok!!
Sounds like you may have been speeding
I LOVE cheese. Do you? What kind is your favorite? I really like gouda. Even the name makes me smile.
Just my 2 cents ... you can't control anything the "other" woman feels or does with the exception of how it affects you. Why sully your hands in an attempt to make someone feel remorse when there is obviously none?
"So all of you "locals" that feel it is everyone else who are bad drivers, take a look in the mirror."
I didn't type that, moron. You did.
No, Jaxx, you don't have to show your stupidity debating by putting words in my mouth. There are left lanes drivers all over the country. It just happens to be the inconsiderate ones seems to congregrate here; all types included, locals and out of towners. Get off your high horse and get some manners. Maybe try holding a door for the person walking in a store behind you; or even don't hold up the flow of traffic because you feel like driving the same speed as the car next to you.
Yes you do! Don't you feel better now? ;)
@Concerned: Thank you -- yes, I know all this. I have dealt with my husband separately and privately. I would not deal with him here, in this column. I think many people have forgotten the purpose of this column. I'm not so stupid as to think that it was all her fault. But I cannot speak to her directly, so I did it via the Love/Hate column.
@ sdr35hw.....you have said a mouth full. I am glad someone reconizes that there is a man who sits high and looks low. GREAT ADVICE!!!
@ joshl725...did you say Jesus Shit??? Really?? I hope you find your way before your eyes are completely shut for good. When you find yourself burning FOREVER...say those same words.
@ the writer of the letter....I get it. Your are very upset with this woman and I cant blame you BUT please remember that it took 2 to tango. Yes your husband has apologized many times. Have you forgiven him? It seems like you are more angry at the woman than your husband. HE was the one who made the commitment to you and HE broke that. As much as it hurts and it shows...you have got to forgive. Everyday, the pain will go away WHEN you begin to forgive. I dont know if you are a believer or not but if you are...you know the word of GOD. Pray for a mended heart and a forgiving soul and to be healed of the hatred and move on. God has something/someone better out there for you.TRUST HIM as you had trusted your husband. HE will never let you down....Good luck and be Blessed!
Re: “The gospel according to the Driver's License Manual”
Why on earth do you have to bring race and religion into this? Do you really think that being a white bicycle rider makes you better than a black church go-er in a lexus?
And I would bet money you voted for Obama too.
