Chris, Either you gotta a heck of a tongue and cheek sense or humor, or you are a leftist pinko.
Arthur Ravenel Jr is in no way responsible for the actions of his son(s). Cousin Arthur is a statesmen, and gentleman, can anyone say that about you?
John q public is right on about the P&C. When I go to Vegas I like to turn on the local news there because they only run fluff stories to make the tourist feel at ease there. The P&C is our on version of tourist news.
I think the City Paper better be careful or they may just become a lot more than just an entertainment rag.
The reporting of late has put the Post & Courier to shame. The timely reporting of news that concerns issues of importance to locals has been a breath of fresh air compared to the P&C's pandering to what is less than 25%, and falling rapidly, of the population.
Keep up the good work and give us more reporting that makes a difference in the city. There is a void that needs to be filled since the P&C does not appear up to the challenge.
Keep up the good work!
Wow, I guess just about anyone can get a PHD these days. Dont get me wrong, as an engineer I would love every columnist in every paper in the world to have studied natural sciences, but I'm afraid not every journalist can be a scientist. Does him not being a scientist make what he said any less true? I guess thats why you chose to attack him personally over actually debating the facts of what he said. Instead of throwing out crackpot theories you should try to present evidence to the contrary, doctor.
So arguments about the Constitutionality of a given policy issue have no validity in the face of scientific data? By that logic I expect the government to close down every single fast food restaurant and bar in existence due to the damaging (possibly devastating) effects of the products they sell. After all, individual rights mean nothing when something has been declared harmful by the scientific community. So why not let the government do anything they want when it comes to protecting us from potentially harmful habits?
Does the US Constitution fall into the category of “senseless argument” or “hot button issue”?
In response Denney comment: Obviously your husband was not really sitting next to you when you posted your comment about "hero's and money." The last transmision of one of the fallen Firefighters at the Sofa Super Store went something like this; "I lost the water line, there is no way I can make it out of here. Tell my wife I love her".
Now, sit down, while your husband is at "work," and write that same letter again, but this time, sign it "The Widow Denney."
Now, how do you feel?
I am saddened that someone would dare say these men were not heroes. They were told there were people in that building. They didn't go in to save your new floral sofa you obviously are sitting on with nothing else to do. The men and women of the Police and Fire Departments make next to poverty level. Many work two andthree jobs to make ends meet. They get into their noble fields to help people, and when they lose their lives helping others they certainly are heroes. Ask any little child who comes to the Fire Deparment to see the trucks, and be taught how to get out of a fire. Can you measure how many children that might have called 911, or gotten out of a fire because of what a fireman taught them?? or is it only dollar amounts you see? Ask anyone who even had a cherished family photo saved in a fire, or someone carried out of a burning building. They educate the public, and give of themselves unselfishly at any event that comes up. Have you gone to at least pay respects at the mangled -horrible site of this fire?. These men died a horrible death, believing they were looking for people inside. Shame on you for counting money. Thing is,these people don't ask for a dime. It comes from the hearts of those wanting to give. This profession is a true brotherhood. I hope you never have to experience what these families have gone through. But if you do, I am sure you will feel forever sorry for what you have said.
As a Veteran of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and as a South Carolina Firefighter I feel an obligation to respond to this article. I joined the Armed Forces prior to September 11th and I knew at that time that enlisting in the Military was a choice that could put me in harms way. I took an oath to defend against all enemies both foreign and domestic. Most of the people fighting over there now have done so after the start of the war. So for you to say these kids joining the military now and dying in Iraq dont have a choice? You are dead wrong! And a lot of communities of lost soldiers do pull together and "fund raise" and so on to help the families left behind. On top of the $500,000 death benefit they will recieve from SGLI.
You say those 9 men didn't die as heroes? You must have a pretty warped definition of what a "hero" really is. Those men said goodbye to thier families and went to work every third day and put their lives on the line in hopes that they could help save a strangers life. I hope you never have to experience a fire in your home but if you do the BRAVE Men and Women of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department will be there. They will respond and act without hesitation and risk their lives for you and your family.
If you dont want to give, if you dont want to throw your spare change in a fire boot, thats fine. Noone will think any less of you. But to bash a community that came together and supported this great cause is ludacris. Shame on you!
Why dont you get out and start your own fund raiser for our troops? Do something more productive than writing letters.
If Thomas Ravenel is a victim, then Homer Simpson should run for President. It is amazing how the wealthier members of our society are able to shadow their intentional mistakes by admitting themselves to rehab. If Thomas has a “medical/mental” problem, then I hope he receives the treatment, however, he should be held accountable for his actions like his accomplice. This is not a political propaganda; this was a conscious decision by a human being, who believed he would not be caught. At least some part of the federal government is doing their job.
I am sure Thomas never invited his accomplice to eat dinner with the esteemed Ravenels. Thomas Ravenel is not different from Marcus smoking drugs on the corner, or Shawn selling drugs on the block. If you do the crime, then you should do the time.
If an exception is made on his behalf because of his name, then many offenders’ sentences will need to be reevaluated! South Carolina is known as the Good Ole Boys State, this will be evident if Ravenel’s crime is pushed under the table.
Cocaine is Cocaine, no matter how the distributor or user tries to justify it!
Thomas Ravenel as victim of a vast left-wing conspiracy? PLEASE.
What the author of this letter to the editor conveniently ignores is that this is another example of the outrageous hypocrisy on the part of conservatives like Ravenel.
When the crime does not involve them, they talk tough about personal responsibility and the "culture of victimhood".
BUT when they are caught, they plead that they are victims of an "illness" and that they scoot off to zillion-dollar-a-night rehab clinics in Arizona or California.
The outrage is this -- these are the people and the party that set themselves up as moral superiors, the party that knows God's Will, the party that sitteth at the right hand of God.
To this I say "Bulls*&t, Hypocrites".
Our hearts go out to you from Alaska. The death of the nine , brave firefighters was on the front page of my local paper this morning. I had walked the dogs up the road to get the paper and began reading the paper on the walk back. I had to sit down and say a prayer for the families and friends of these brave folks. Please know you are in our hearts and prayers. God bless the Good Guys. Jo & Gregory Acres
I know that this won't seem much consolation, but, from the other side of the world, my heart goes out to the brave firefighters from your city who lost their lives fighting the fire at the furniture store.
I come from an area where fire is a summer experience mostly felt in our rural areas as a result of wildfire. My city of Ballarat in Victoria Australia is approximately the same size as Charleston, and I am absolutely horrified and saddened by what has happened. In the not too recent past we lost five men in a bush fire near hear.
I truly hope that God can help heal your unimaginable sorrow.
Another comment to the lady from Indiana who found the City Paper potentially offensive to her toddlers. Every city has its entertainment-oriented 'free' papers, but I don't know of many three-and-a-half year-olds who read them. They aren't meant to be 'family-oriented' ("Mommy, where's my Village Voice?"). As for her children being exposed to pictures of cleavages on the back pages of the City Paper, I would suggest she pay more attention to what she brings into her own house. Maam, it's not the City Paper's job, it's yours. Hey - isn't that your kid playing in the street?
To the lady from Indiana: While you're busy teaching your children that gays aren't an acceptable topic for discussion, could you also teach them about recycling? Please retrieve your torn-up City Paper from the trash and put it in the appropriate recycling bin.
Also, it's "my husband and I", not "me and my husband."
Richard L Wolfe - I remember you from your Post & Courier Letter to the Editor (Saturday, May 12). The one blaming Democrats for quietly eroding the Bill of Rights (because of their Hate Crime Bill) and claiming that Democrats will exploit the Virginia Tech massacre to their political gain in 2008. How many civil liberties have we lost under this current administration? How many times have we heard Republicans invoke 9/11 for their political game? There's nothing wrong with Moredock's columns. There's something wrond with your sanity.
what word(s) in my comment did i misspell? i can't type well so i don't bother with capital letters if that is the issue. you are 'missing the forest for the trees' if you are focusing on the spelling rather than the content.
Thanks for keeping us posted on the WHITE TRASH point of view. Now crawl back in your hole and resume eating your own excrement.
Good one. Did Will Mordock help you with your spelling. Keep up the good work.
Last time I checked, it took 2 people to have sex and get someone pregnant. Funny how it's always the girl's fault. Never mind that she may have been pressured by her boyfriend to not use a condom "because it doesn't feel as good" or because he "can always find another girl who will." And never mind that nine times out of ten it's the girl who's left to deal with the aftermath because the guy takes off as soon as he hears she's pregnant.
it was probably a bible-thumping, god-fearing, hypocritical AND CONSERVATIVE evangelist(married by the way) who got his girlfriend-the woman described above-pregnant!!
