As for Smalls, he was quite a man and rarely gets the credit he deserves. He more than any other man was responsible for the establishment of mandatory public education.
She was a product of her times. She did not cause South Carolina's social ills; she was a product of them. Do not think that her books reflected solely her views. I am sure the state of South Carolina had some official acting as minister of propaganda that made sure school books said what they wanted!
