Re: “Stegelin: Just wait 'til Charleston's new panhandling law kicks in

There could be more to this than just panhandling. Think of other instances where there are hand to hand exchanges from the street to the car. This law now creates another tool for the PD to use as PC in the war on drugs.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

"the fact remains that the 2nd Amendment exists to ensure that the American people are armed in order to be able to act as guarantors of our own liberty, if required."

So either stop complaining that your liberties are being taken away, or start shooting.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

So, your esteemed military history argument is "Yes, you're right about the rest of recorded human history up to now, but due to technology invented in the past couple years now it's all totally different and all past historical examples are moot?"

Alfred Nobel vainly thought the same thing when he invited TNT, it would make war too devastating to contemplate. Maxim foolishly thought the machinegun would make war technologically obsolete. Some said the same of atomic weapons. Don't be so naïve, you're embarrassing yourself.

ISIS is clearly a lightly armed threat, with zero air power, zero navy and no armored vehicles (except what they can capture, though they can't maintain them). That they are having such success against conventionally armed military forces demonstrates my point exactly.

Anyway, the fact remains that the 2nd Amendment exists to ensure that the American people are armed in order to be able to act as guarantors of our own liberty, if required. You should advocate for the legislative effort to repeal the 2nd Amendment if you don't like it. The process exists, use it. At least then you could be respected for having a clear and honest goal.

Yes, in 1783 you would have been able to get back into the Imperial fold like a good subject of his majesty, sailing off to Canada or Jamaica.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

"The American Revolution? Afghani tribesmen vs the British, Russians and Americans? Partisans and resistance fighters all over Europe tying down dozens of German divisions? South Vietnam?"

The evolution of warfare technology has rendered those comparisons ridiculous.

"Syria and Iraq today vs ISIS?"

Who is the lightly armed force here? Either you are saying Iraq and Syria have super advanced capabilities, which is false, or that ISIS is weak, which I keep hearing from the derp brigade is not the case. They are apparently a big huge scary dangerous threat threat to everyone and their mothers and their mothers' apple pie.

"Well, there were people like y'all here in Charleston in 1775-1783 also. Fortunately, there were plenty of the other sort also."

Again, who are you arguing for in this scenario? The inferior yokels did submit, and were (unfortunately) brought back into the fold.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

"So if we should ever find ourselves at the point of revolution, do you honestly believe private citizens stand a chance against an incredibly bloated military that will use any excuse to justify its expensive existence?"

So, a large and powerful military can never be defeated by more lightly armed forces? The American Revolution? Afghani tribesmen vs the British, Russians and Americans? Partisans and resistance fighters all over Europe tying down dozens of German divisions? South Vietnam? Syria and Iraq today vs ISIS?

Whatever hypothetical revolution that may or may not happen in the future in the US would be messy and whatever conditions caused it would be widespread, affecting members of the US military also. Look what happened to the US military in 1860-1861.

However, the "it wouldn't have done them any good and it won't do us any good, we're too weak, it's too hard, they're too scary, best to submit" attitude is AWESOME and INSPIRATIONAL. Well, there were people like y'all here in Charleston in 1775-1783 also. Fortunately, there were plenty of the other sort also.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

Nothing educational or remotely thought provoking about this piece. It's the same old wash-rinse-repeat from the corporate news cycle. No original thought behind it at all. I've seen the exact same meme played out in hundreds of thousands of internet posts by various artists. Meh.

No idea why people feel the need to keep debating this topic, it's been settled already.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

"Ron,have you ever considered that if a revolution takes place that a lot of the military may possibly on the side of the revolutionaries?"

They why do you need guns?

Come on, people. This debate is as stupid now as it has always been and has nothing to do with gun ownership. It has to do with fetishists.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

Trollslayer, obviously you don't know whether I have a "popgun" or a cabinet full of semi-automatic assault rifles that can be converted to automatic in a matter of minutes. Obviously you have never heard of some lieutenants that never came back from Nam due to "friendly fire". And obviously you are not familiar with "military coups" or military overthrows of governments. This is where the people get the military on their side because, after all, the military are citizens, also, and get fed up with over blown governments. And obviously, there will never be gun control In America as the liberals want.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

Yeah, Showmoor, you go up against even the police with your little popgun, never mind the actual military.
Good luck with that.
The countries of Belgium and France couldn't stand up to the Wehrmacht, doubt if the poor Jews would have had any chance.
"They are not government robots that will follow blindly, by thinking that you degrade most of our military"
Obviously, you have never been in the military, or you would know that you follow orders or find yourself on the other end of the gun.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

Ron,have you ever considered that if a revolution takes place that a lot of the military may possibly on the side of the revolutionaries? They are not government robots that will follow blindly, by thinking that you degrade most of our military. Trollslayer, how do you know that guns wouldn't have done any good? No debate from you, just pithy remarks. So to paraphrase trollslayer: Gun control,; won't do any good.I LIKE that debate!!! Keeps it real simple and without any fact.

Won't do you any good either.

I especially like the last one. He doesn't even have enough balls to cross the police tape, but yet he is going to take on the whole government.

Authoritarians masquerading as libertarians have consistently supported the expansion of the military and domestic interdiction programs no matter the cost, but ironically feel like they are prepared to take them head on should the situation arise. I find it quite comical.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

As you can see, Ron totally skipped answering my questions concerning gun control. He is obviously for it but has no idea how to do it. He hasn't thought that far. Too busy repeating what the liberal media tell him.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

"So why do people like...Cid constantly complain about the government being tyrannical?"

Ron's arguments often involve stating what other people said, though they actually didn't say it. It's ok, though, because he knows what's "code" for what he wants people to say. Leftists are great at that.

The 2nd Amendment absolutely exists so that the people act as guarantors of their own liberty. That is indisputable, but for those that had any doubt it was settled in the SCOTUS Heller decision in 2008. We are not, at present, living under a tyrannical government. Our government has assumed a greater role in our lives than at any other time in US history, but we're nowhere near a revolution. If we ever get there, I'll let Ron know so he can get to Ottawa, or more likely Tijuana, ASAP.
