Re: “Stegelin: Turkey leftovers

Look, Christmas accounts for anywhere from 15% - 28% of yearly retails sales, depending on which sector you look at.

If we don't want our fragile, late-capitalist, consumer-driven economy to collapse, we either need to make sure Christmas comes earlier and earlier each year or we have to figure out a way to commercialize Thanksgiving. One stupid parade won't cut it.

Re: “Stegelin: The only issue that matters in Charleston

There has been some discussion of transit, but the candidates are going to talk about what the public talks to them about. If you aren't out there pounding on other issues, you'll hear about what other people talk about. The Car/traffic obsession is relentless outside the Peninsula. Evidently people who live there do little more than drive. Most of these areas have no room for more Asphalt and have to be looking at transit for improvements. However many of them will drive until the day their keys are taken away and they're transported to the nursing home because they can't drive any more. www.busec.org

Re: “Stegelin: The only issue that matters in Charleston

Proven track records? What have you done in the past to improve the issues on traffic, flooding, etc.? If you piggyback on the success of Mayor Riley then you also have to bear the burden of the failures, your failures.

Re: “Stegelin: Charleston, after the deluge

They are aquatic creatures trying to fit in with the natives that blame all their ills on people from OH that have, in their minds, ruined the Charleston they grew up in.

Re: “Stegelin: Just wait 'til Charleston's new panhandling law kicks in

There could be more to this than just panhandling. Think of other instances where there are hand to hand exchanges from the street to the car. This law now creates another tool for the PD to use as PC in the war on drugs.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

"the fact remains that the 2nd Amendment exists to ensure that the American people are armed in order to be able to act as guarantors of our own liberty, if required."

So either stop complaining that your liberties are being taken away, or start shooting.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

So, your esteemed military history argument is "Yes, you're right about the rest of recorded human history up to now, but due to technology invented in the past couple years now it's all totally different and all past historical examples are moot?"

Alfred Nobel vainly thought the same thing when he invited TNT, it would make war too devastating to contemplate. Maxim foolishly thought the machinegun would make war technologically obsolete. Some said the same of atomic weapons. Don't be so naïve, you're embarrassing yourself.

ISIS is clearly a lightly armed threat, with zero air power, zero navy and no armored vehicles (except what they can capture, though they can't maintain them). That they are having such success against conventionally armed military forces demonstrates my point exactly.

Anyway, the fact remains that the 2nd Amendment exists to ensure that the American people are armed in order to be able to act as guarantors of our own liberty, if required. You should advocate for the legislative effort to repeal the 2nd Amendment if you don't like it. The process exists, use it. At least then you could be respected for having a clear and honest goal.

Yes, in 1783 you would have been able to get back into the Imperial fold like a good subject of his majesty, sailing off to Canada or Jamaica.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

"The American Revolution? Afghani tribesmen vs the British, Russians and Americans? Partisans and resistance fighters all over Europe tying down dozens of German divisions? South Vietnam?"

The evolution of warfare technology has rendered those comparisons ridiculous.

"Syria and Iraq today vs ISIS?"

Who is the lightly armed force here? Either you are saying Iraq and Syria have super advanced capabilities, which is false, or that ISIS is weak, which I keep hearing from the derp brigade is not the case. They are apparently a big huge scary dangerous threat threat to everyone and their mothers and their mothers' apple pie.

"Well, there were people like y'all here in Charleston in 1775-1783 also. Fortunately, there were plenty of the other sort also."

Again, who are you arguing for in this scenario? The inferior yokels did submit, and were (unfortunately) brought back into the fold.

Re: “Stegelin: Whither gun control?

"So if we should ever find ourselves at the point of revolution, do you honestly believe private citizens stand a chance against an incredibly bloated military that will use any excuse to justify its expensive existence?"

So, a large and powerful military can never be defeated by more lightly armed forces? The American Revolution? Afghani tribesmen vs the British, Russians and Americans? Partisans and resistance fighters all over Europe tying down dozens of German divisions? South Vietnam? Syria and Iraq today vs ISIS?

Whatever hypothetical revolution that may or may not happen in the future in the US would be messy and whatever conditions caused it would be widespread, affecting members of the US military also. Look what happened to the US military in 1860-1861.

However, the "it wouldn't have done them any good and it won't do us any good, we're too weak, it's too hard, they're too scary, best to submit" attitude is AWESOME and INSPIRATIONAL. Well, there were people like y'all here in Charleston in 1775-1783 also. Fortunately, there were plenty of the other sort also.
