Tasty food with anice atmosphere. Staff very friendly and attentive.
Excellent food and service! Try the pork chop and the meatloaf. Their collards are blow your mind delicious. Down right wonderful locally sourced home cooked goodness.
I've been there for breakfast just about monthly since they opened, and I love, love, love their bagel sandwiches and breakfast burritos. The portions are large, and they don't skimp on the more expensive parts of the recipe (lox, et cetera).
My only knock on them is that the ordering/service flow isn't logical and sometimes that means a while before your order is taken. But it is never really a "problem."
Overall: big fan.
I shared a couple of pizzas with two friends recently and they were intersting artisan pizzas and the setting at the big tables was nice. I will go again - price was on higher side but all and all I found it to be a good experience.
This restaurant closed temporarily and has now re-opened. My wife & I went there many times before it closed and always enjoyed it. We have not been back since re-opening so can't comment on how it is now.
So many weird reviews here! I feel the need to state the following before I share my review: 1) I am not a "Kiawah Snob." I'm a multi-generational middle-class Islander, ok? 2) Get over the location. Mondo's on James Island is ASTOUNDING and they're located in a "strip mall."
So, onto what's really important: THE FOOD. On one occasion, my friends and I share the reasonably priced apps: Mushroom Toast (sounds GROSS, but it's delicious) and the Roasted Apple. The apple was stuffed with this really delicious dressing that was neither too dry, nor two "glue-y." (I've been the victim of stuffing with a paste-like Consistency and was thrilled to find that not to be the case here.)
After a few more drinks, we ordered another round of that damn mushroom toast and I ordered this apple/onion tart. (A very apple-centric menu?) Delicious, delicious, delicious.
During this trip, our service was EXCELLENT. Our waiter was attentive, friendly and really nice. . .especially considering that we were just there for drinks and apps.
I tried Sweeny's again during lunch hours. My lunch-buddy, a visiting Long Islander, took on the Lobster Roll. . .which, I will admit, is too rich for my blood in regards to what I'm willing to spend on lunch. However, my LI buddy said the lobster was delicious and just as good as anything he's had at home. I took on the $10 barbecue chicken sandwich and found it pretty good. My chicken was a teeeeeny bit dry for my taste, but it was really good. Fries = DELICIOUS. Hot, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside.
Drinks/beers = cold and never without one!
Service = the first time, it was stellar! The second time, totally passable, but not up to the previous visit's standards.
Location = despite the yammering on about how it's located in a lowly strip mall, they've done a fantastic job with renovations and it's really very lovely. Anyone bitching about the location needs to get over it, get out and travel a little. I've eaten some of the most delicious food in some of the ugliest surroundings.
I'm looking forward to getting back there and trying other things on the menu. I suppose if you have to travel a long way to get there, it might not be your thing. But it's SO NICE to have another "on the nicer end of casual" restaurant on John's Island (even if it's practically across the street from the OTHER "nicer and of casual" [Fat Hen] restaurant on John's Island and not too far from the OTHER-OTHER nice restaurant [Wild Olive]).
If you're out that way, it's definitely good enough to give it a try. The prices aren't hot-dog cart low, but they are NOT as high as some people have suggested. (Not everything on the menu is a lobster roll.)
The layout is indeed confusing, there needs to be a giant "ORDER HERE" sign when you first walk in. But the service was GREAT, from the front of house to back of house. Pizza was really, really great too - and I personally prefer a really thin crust but this regular crust was excellent. I had the Verdura, if you're a veggie lover this will be right up your alley. Great for large groups and kids.
I have had a lot of Thai food. Since Jasmine closed on Folly Road and driving to Basil is such a pain, we decided to give this place a try for lunch. We ordered Thai Tea (the bomb) an order of Basil Shrimp Spring Rolls (fresh and delicious), Phad Thai (much better than the Mustard Seed (theirs is gross!) and Massaman Curry (oh yeah!). It was all very, very good. Portions were just right, the spice was good. We will definitely be back. This is a great place to grab lunch or dinner or even take out. The decor is not much to write home about, but it's very convenient since it's on James Island!! We are lacking good food choices on the island. Thank you Pick Thai !
Both of the shrimp sandwiches here are fantastic, and they make some really fun condiments (sweet potato-garlic kimchi, sweet onion-mustard relish, etc.). I also like their green beans and their macaroni salad with pineapple and green chilies. I haven't been as impressed with their fries or chips so far (too soggy one time, too dry another), but I imagine they'll work out those kinks, soon, if they haven't already. This place is a great option on Johns Island.
Absolutely loved my experience at Burwell's. Food, atmosphere, and service were spot on.
We have been to the pub in Rivertowne several time and have had a great experience each time. I look forward to our next visit. Steve
My bf and I dined at 82 Queen last night. We had never been and decided that Restaurant Week was the perfect opportunity to try this restaurant. We had drinks at the bar before our table time, the bar is almost publike and pleasant. We had dinner in the "Queen's Garden" which was romantic, comfortable, and like an enchanted nook that was completely unexpected. The food was stellar. The Roasted Pepper and Corn Bisque was creamy and full of flavor, the Burrata was creamy, the orange tomatoes firm and sweet/tart, and the wine reduction was different and delicious (and I am so glad it was not another balsamic reduction). The short rib was mammoth-sized, but succulent and it shredded at the instant the fork touched it, the cheerwine bbq sauce was delightful and the wreckfish was meaty, juicy and satisfying. The biggest surprise came from the bacon caramel sauce that was served with the creamiest, most chocolately cheesecake I have ever tasted. Our server Mark was friendly and attentive and we had a wonderful time as well as a delicious meal.
I've only been to Sweeney's once so far, but it seems like a great addition to John's Island. They've worked wonders with Normandy Farm's old space, and the menu items my table tried were nice, too (crab salad, scallops). It has a nice mix of meaty and veg-friendly dishes. It's also pretty flexible in terms of price. You could go big with fairly expensive entrees, or order a sandwich for a modest dinner out. I hope it gets enough support to keep opening for lunch - with Fat Hen and Wild Olive both shuttered during the day, it really fills a gap, then!
This one of the better joints in town. They have a handful of very well prepared and creative gourmet sandwiches. Duck fat fries are pretty hit and miss, unfortunately, but I don't mind rolling the dice on them. Good beer selection as well.

Excellent light crust, interesting beer choices, delicious panini. No wings. Very nice people, community minded supporting Habitat for Humanity, local sport teams and neighborhood school programs.
We've dined at this restaurant several times and the food is excellent. The homemade fried mozzarella (made on-site) is to die for! We continue to patronize the restaurant because the food and wait service have always been wonderful but watch out for the female owner that man's the hostess desk - she's beyond rude and is socially retarded. We gave her our name and number for the table and then proceeded to the bar for drinks. After a 30 minute wait, I checked back in and was told our table was given away because she "couldn't find us"....what?????? We told her we would be in the bar - not 30 feet away! When I told her we were less than 30 feet away and she never called us, her response was, "whatever"...REALLY???? This is not our first disappointing experience with her...she may be an owner but she's the last person you want greeting/servicing customers. If you go to this restaurant be prepared to be disappointed with this aspect!
Good food and service. Apparently we have gone to the wrong restaurants before now because we found Charleston to be lacking good restaurants ....way too much fried food but Hanks delivered. Thanks!!!
I've been twice and think it's a nice little neighborhood place. The crust on our pizzas was crackly and black in a few places, which I liked. The Del Re was salty goodness, and my toddler loved his cheese and fried egg pizza. I wasn't as excited about their take on sausage and mushroom, but it still was perfectly fine. I wouldn't visit Crust for a special occasion, necessarily, but I'm glad to have another solid option for a weekday lunch or dinner.
Dinner last night at the Fat Hen was a pleasure. My good friend, her mother, and I enjoyed big, succulent mussels with bacon and artichokes; using our bread to soak up the "butter soup" left over was not only delicious but fun. The Coq Au Vin was rich but not overwhelming and the tender pieces of butternut squash tossed with the hericovert was delightful. The Shrimp and Crab was a great surprise; this dish had just enough spice, just enough butter, and just enough plump pink shrimp. We didn't make it to dessert but the Blackberry Cobbler was enticing, I'm sure we would have had it but we had movie tickets.
Our server was attentive, timely, and warm. He provided a great suggestion for wine pairing, anticipated our needs, and although busy, was relaxed and friendly. This staff is really a team and you can see that the servers, server assistants, and host staff make every effort for the dining experience to be seamless.
Oh yeah, there is bacon: cubed bacon, bacon lardons, and crispy bacon. The celebration of bacon is winding down, but The Fat Hen uses the bacon as a flavor enhancer (a little salt here, a little smoke there, a little meaty bit here, a little fatty bit there), the bacon doesn't overwhelm the accompanying flavors.
I live in Goose Creek and I will gladly drive to John's Island to enjoy this gem of a restaurant again.
