We were visiting Charleston so I took my boyfriend there for Father's Day. I'm from Charleston and it is one of my favorite spot. It was his first time there but he enjoyed everything. We both had the seafood platter and YES the scallops were the best. We look forward to visiting again soon with other family and friends.
The price point on food and the quantities are pretty good. The lunch specials are priced really well. And yes, I like the fresh and made to order aspect of the food. Absolute thumbs up on the guacamole. Plus when it is not too crazy, Raul himself will come out and socialize with the patrons. It's definitely not the food from the frozen aisle of the store junk like La Ha or Los Arcos. The only critique I may have is at times the servers don't seem to be fully informed of all the items on the menu, i.e. ask a question and they might be able to answer, but more often than not it has been "let me go ask".
We love to eat lunch at Sermets, and for some reason it has always been on a Sunday. We love their food but for some reason their bartenders are terrible. We always sit at the bar, perfect for people watching on King Street. The bartenders are very unfriendly. Never greet you, never give you a wine list without asking, and seem very slow on service of drinks. I fully understand that they are also servicing service bar, but if Sunday lunch is always busy, then maybe an extra bartender? Didn't even get a thank you this time. It's a shame as the food is fresh and great tasting, but service and surly bartenders can keep me away.
Great food, my favorite burger in town. And the beer dinners are fun and a great meal for cheap.
Ditto on jaxx's comment on front-of-house service, unfortunately. I'm a regular here and just deal with it and try to make it easy on them because the food is worth the hassle. Probably pretty hard to hold on to people in this location.
Bartenders are not great and there seems to be a revolving door at this position (not super uncommon in Chas). Once a female bartender actually left a full bar to come around and sit with her "bestie" who surprised her from out of town. She announced to the whole bar that she was sorry and explained the situation as if any of the thirsty customers really gave a shit. Yup, we missed our movie that night and almost didnt come back. I hope she revolves to another bar real soon.
The consistently great burgers and good beer selection outweigh the bad experiences I've had here so service won't deter me from going...I just learned not to go unless I had plenty of time and patience to enjoy.
Ever since the opening of Cha Cha's, I only went here to party after-dark and have had mixed experiences, good and bad. It wasn't until last week that I decided to tag along to happy hour with some friends. I was blown away by the 1$ beef tacos and 1$ tecates. Seriously. Check it out.
Small plates are yum. Space is gorg. I love skinny jeans but the previous review is really confusing. If my jeans made you dislike the restaurant I apologize?
Great Pizza, but the menu is a little limited. I wish there were a few more options for appetizers and salads, but otherwise great pizza, and great atmosphere!
I have gone here on multiple occasions (Citadel Mall) and usually order the burger special for that day. Ingrediants are very good and the offerings are creative. The fries and homemade sauces are good as well. One of the best places for a burger in the Charleston area.
I only gave them 4 stars because they took their delicious pad thai off the lunch menu.

Finally made it over to DeSano's last night. I will start off by saying it was the best pizza we have had in quite awhile. My husband, son, and I shared the Diavolo and San Gennaro. Both were excellent. Those little calabrian peppers are fantastic. We could not stop eating them. I hope there is a place in town where I can buy some.
The woman working at the front counter was very friendly and funny. That being said, I do agree with the other comments on the strange layout. The drink options are strange. No wines by the glass or tap beer. Maybe something with their type of license? They had a pitcher of water in the dining room, but only one and it got empty quick and they kept having to fill it up. How about a couple of pitchers and maybe even leave some at the tables? I don't like the no plate thing and the flimsy, useless plastic utensils. Sorry, call me an amateur but I like to eat pizza with a knife and fork.
All in all, a good experience. It was definitely on the expensive side so if you are looking to feed your family for not too much money, then maybe save this place for another time. I would definitely bring my own wine next time. That seems to be the best way to go and balance out the higher priced pies.
I have not had the pleasure of dining there yet, but will tell you that each of the six or so times I have been, I have been able to hear my friends talking, which is uncommon in most of the bars on upper King Street. Sitting back Saturday night and watching a good looking defense end looking Charleston boy show off his shag moves to his girl was just wonderful. You could tell, his mother taught him well. Other your me tried to free style to "Carolina Girl", which just did not cut it with their ladies or the crowd. Girls gathered and swayed, waiting for a guy to come and ask them to shag. They were pretty and the guys just did not get it. That was sad. However, the other fellow stole the floor and he knew it.
Being able to see the jazz guys that used to play at Mistral from afar is awesome and I would never think that I would have seen that in a bar on Upper King Street. Even DJ Matt Todd was setting up as I was leaving, who could often be heard at LIGHT, Peter Evans' place down the street (of Stella Nova fame..) He will nail what the crown and the bar wants - and keeping it on the low key and not loud side will continue to be a pay off for this place.
Finally, NICE ladies at the entrance to meet you, greet you, and help you get a table and identify if you want food service or just drinks. Nice to have someone paying attention to you in a lovely way at the door - the way that it should be.
I like the biergarten's relaxed atmosphere. If the inside gets too crowded or loud my friends and I usually go outside to play a round or two of corn hole with liters of beer in hand. The food is pretty good and I like the selection of beer they have. I have to say out of all the bars in Charleston biergarten probably has the best outside section since they have plenty of space to hang out.
Ate lunch at Lee Lee's Hot Kitchen. I had the veggie fried rice and an order of spicy dumplings. Both were excellent. The fried rice was full of fresh vegetables and the dumplings were cooked to perfection floating in a nice sauce. They could use more spicy condiments. I'll definitely be back.
Restaurant Week has won again! We went to Blossom Sunday night for the special menu and, in addition, tried the gnocchi. The food was delicious and our service was excellent. Thanks Rick, and Blossom for a wonderful dining experience!
In Dec. I was in S. C. and by accident I found "JESTINE"s. There was a parking space on the side of the restaurant but the sign said, "no parking 2 - 7 p m". It was after 7 so I parked there. I asked inside if they thought it was O K if I parked there. The Manager said, "Will, you may or may not get a ticked". So I went to move my car and the Manager came out with me. He asked if I saw the white truck parked down the street, I said, "yes", he told me to take that spot as soon as the truck moved. I asked how he knew it was going to move. He said, "I have the keys in my hand". What a graceious thing to do if we all could just be nicer to others it would be a better world. Now that's Southern Hospitality and he is a real Southern Gentleman. Thank you for that unusual experience. Jestine's is a fun place to be and the food is good also. Thank you!
Bay Street Biergarten Review
If you're looking for a great selection of craft beers (mostly offered directly at the bar) or just want a large venue for socializing with a group of friends, this is a great spot. The table taps can be a little difficult to get to when crowded, but still a nice addition that bings a different style of service Charleston has been missing out on. With regards to food, there is pretty decent menu, but quite honestly most people go here for the beer selection, so its generally what you expect (the giant bowl of tattertots with cheese and gravy still always fun at any age). The staff has been friendly and accommodating as well.
The only issue I see is with parking around the area can be a llittle bit sketchy, since the lot always get full. However there is a giant lot that is open on the port terminal road that runs parallel to E. Bay.
Coastal Cupboard is a nice little local cooking store, right in the center of Belle Hall Shopping center. They have a nice selection of cookware and cutlery, along with some hard to find grill accessories. They are one of the few Big Green Egg retailers in the area, and actually have a few of the BGE accessories in house. The staff has always been kind and helpful when I shop there. Sometimes the prices can be a bit on the high side, but the convenience is often worth it.
I love having another option in Mt P for cooking supplies and other gourmet goodies. Southern Seasons has an excellent supply of cookware, sauces, pasta, tea, and coffee. The deli has some wonderful charcuterie and cheeses, but Whole Foods seems to have similar cheese selections. The beer selection is decent, but could still use some work. I was fairly impressed by the rare and vintage wine cellar, but didn't see anything I had to have in there. Overall, this is a store that will be a nice option when I am looking for some special cookware or ingredients. I wish they had a bit more specialized goods and cookware, but I can be fairly picky thanks to internet shopping.
Wonderful space for an event. Went to a Guerrilla Cuisine dinner there a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how pretty the distillery hardware looks with the right lighting and how warm and comfortable the space was - especially for a warehouse and work site, at that (the bathrooms are a literally shining example). A few strategically placed pieces of art (big works well) and beautifully set tables were all that was needed to transform what would be a cavernous area in the back into a really cool, even elegant, venue. I know others worked hard to make that transformation and I WAS under the influence of some fabulous food, but the end result of GC & others' efforts highlighted the possibilities of the distillery space itself. The Striped Pig people proved very hospitable folks, dedicated to their craft and eager to share the process & results with willing fans. Sampled some powerful but oddly delicious moonshine & a more finished product. It is obvious that a great deal of thought went into making this space a welcoming place to hang out, whether for an event or just a visit.
Great accents for a meal here. The bulk gourmet chocolate is wonderful in moderate amounts. The locally made Chocolate, from Charleston is the best I've ever head. Thrilled so see so many local producer's products here. The South, for all its faults, produces some of the finest food products on Planet earth and we don't need to go further to prepare really extraordinary meals. Italy is great and I love being there and eating their food with them. I was in Sienna once, at a Contrade dinner out on the street, just like you see in the Movies. Their families made the cheese, pasta, sausage, wine, olive oil and vegetables that were part of our meal. I met the people whose families had owned those farms, factories and cheese houses for centuries. There is no greater celebration of a culture than to eat it's food grown and made by the hands of people connected to its land. Sometimes on very special occassions we hold a dinner at our home and everthing on the table comes from within 100 miles of our house. This place makes that much easier.
