I've had good food almost every time I go, but as others have pointed out, service is so hit or miss. Also they need to up the trivia prizes. $30 for the winning team? Come on, they do so much business there on trivia night, I bet even more teams would show up if they even compete with other places and give $50 or more for the first place team. Even if one or 2 more teams showed up, that will more than make up for the $20 difference in winning team prize when all is said and done. When I go there, I don't think I've ever had a tab for just myself less than $25 when you combine the food and beer.
If you are into heavy smoking and prefer to pick up women who rate a 5 or less out of 10, this is the place for you. I will say a couple of the bartenders were cool and did their job well. Otherwise, the place is analogous to the quality of the set of teeth of the average woman who goes there.
They have 4pool tournaments a week lots of fun
I actually have to reverse some of the previous comments and say I almost always have great service but my food is almost always messed up.
The wait staff do revolve and some are good and some are bad but it is the bartenders that make it. There are two guys that tend bar that I will look for when I go - Jack is one and then another guy that I have never caught his name. Both are amazing and always remember you. My husband moved out of town for 3 months for work and when he came back the not only remembered him but served up his usual with out a question asked.
The food is another story - I have been to all of the Sesame locations on more than once occasion and when I lived downtown I was in Five Loaves every other week. The owners know what they are doing when it comes to food. The recipes are to die for... this location always seems to mess stuff up in the kitchen though. When I first started going in 2011 it was great and I was in there once a week but they have slowly gone down hill. Now it is to the point where I just take the hike to the Mount Pleasant location to get my burger fix. Of the past 6 time I have been in there I sent my burger back 4 for not being done (I was pregnant so I had to order well done and every time it was still very red and bloody) and once there was a white plastic wrapper in my salad. Yes a wrapper. Not a small piece. Larger than my thumb and bright white - with some kind of muck on it. That was my last visit.
The food is good and the bartenders are friendly but the kitchen staff is terrible. Just go to the other locations.
Great food, my favorite burger in town. And the beer dinners are fun and a great meal for cheap.
Ditto on jaxx's comment on front-of-house service, unfortunately. I'm a regular here and just deal with it and try to make it easy on them because the food is worth the hassle. Probably pretty hard to hold on to people in this location.
Bartenders are not great and there seems to be a revolving door at this position (not super uncommon in Chas). Once a female bartender actually left a full bar to come around and sit with her "bestie" who surprised her from out of town. She announced to the whole bar that she was sorry and explained the situation as if any of the thirsty customers really gave a shit. Yup, we missed our movie that night and almost didnt come back. I hope she revolves to another bar real soon.
The consistently great burgers and good beer selection outweigh the bad experiences I've had here so service won't deter me from going...I just learned not to go unless I had plenty of time and patience to enjoy.
Really enjoy this place especially on every other Tuesday Evening at 'round 7:30pm when the Bluegrass Band "RED TOP RAMBLERS" play their music....a real treat. And usually it's Steak Night on Tuesday's, too. I also enjoy the Musical talent of Ted McKee on Tuesday evening as he plays on the other every other Tuesday at HUNLEY's.
My wife and I have had the opportunity to eat lunch at G&M perhaps 10 times. Every time we've been there we've loved it. Sometimes it is very crowded, other times it's just crowded. Elbow to elbow, everybody here is loving the food and the authentic atmosphere. I will continue to try to find an excuse to be on Broad Street around noon.
My boyfriend and I ate dinner here a few weeks ago on a romantic getaway to Charleston. We chose Stars because the menu sounded good, the weather was nice, and they have a rooftop bar. We made a reservation, were seated promptly by a friendly hostess, and were excited to try the many delicious-sounding menu options.
Our high expectations were not met, unfortunately. It was extremely loud inside the restaurant, to the point of not being able to hear each other screaming across our small two-person table. Additionally, the bruschetta and flounder tasted like the Dead Sea. I didn't have high blood pressure when I went here, but I could very well have left with it, considering the ridiculous amount of salt in these dishes. Upon "finishing" our meal, and sending nearly the entire plates of food back to the kitchen, no one bothered to ask us if there was anything wrong with the food.
The lesson I have learned from this experience is as follows: if you want a fun drink and a cool rooftop atmosphere, this is the place to go, but if you want a delicious and romantic meal, look elsewhere to one of the many fabulous Charleston restaurants.
All 3 stars go to BOH. The food is almost always good, the service is almost always bad. Sometimes the food is great, sometimes the service is terrible. In at least a dozen visits, the food has never been bad, but the service has never been good. No one in the FOH appears to give a shit, as if they are on day 4 of a 3 day bender, and quite proud of it. Kudos to BOH for getting us in there anyway.
Your problem with Page's Thieves Market is that it won Best Antique Store, which means you have a problem with the voters, not Page's.
Being a vendor and rating them 1 star for winning does indeed sound like sour grapes.i
@ mbayasud Didn't bother reading after new york....
I went to wreckfish on 3/ 28/2014 me and my sister went out to have a nice day which turn out to a nightmare. I left my phone on the table. an you would think all the money this place is making. they would do better this is so true about managers thats has a business the manager at 7690 northwoods blvd. north charleston. he has a real bad addittude he does not know how to deal with his customers. And I will not be going back to Wreckfish never ever again he sucks as a manger and remember the customers are always right. without the customers you have no business what do you solve by being so ruled. The managers name is DAN. He had the nerve to hang up the phone because he couldn't handle the problem thats what you call a weak man with no proud in his business. and if i could do a survery he would get 000000000000 mangers are suppose to set example to be leaders not bring down a bad name for the company managers suck at WReckfish
Worse movie theater! I have lost my wallet twice and I've constantly called and they never pick up. Horrible customer service.
Pages is really not an ""Antique Shop" at all. It has some 1930s-1980s vintage collectibles and furniture but no real or fine antiques at all. The building is quaint and a wonderful photo op for tourists on their way out to Sullivans. I think to compare it to Terrace Oaks is sort of like Apples and Oranges. One has real Antiques as well as Vintage and the other has simply vintage.
My review was about my experience. I found the food is overpriced, the portions small, it was so loud we practically had to scream at each other over the table, and the clientele was extruded from the same vintage cookie cutter. Maybe I hit it on the night of a scenester convention. Regardless, that was my experience. Yours may vary, which is why I think it's good for a wide variety of people to offer different points of view. What works for some may not work for others so it doesn't make either of us wrong.
As for "hating on top restaurants," I'm guilty as charged. I don't like being ripped off, end of story. That's how I feel about virtually everything on Upper King with the notable exception of Prohibition. Also, "top" and "popular" are not synonyms. Top is subjective and, as I said above, people have different opinions.
We recently tried Okra Grill after some of our local friends recommended it. Everything we had was awesome and it will be our new favorite. Even my picky 10 year old cleared her plate and tried eating off of ours so that in itself is a miracle! I am thankful that Tommy Condon's, one of our other favs had a B on the door over St. Patrick's Day weekend because it led us to this new favorite.
In reply to ursus: I am not from Ohio; I am from New York. I have lived in Charleston for 18 years, and I have traveled all of this area visiting a lot of antiques shops and malls. The problem with Page's is not how they treat customers, which is quite well. My point is the variety of items on display/for sale. The comparison was intended with regard to the inventory, not customer service.
Perhaps you needed to read my remarks more closely, as well as realize that the rating was for a type of a store/business, etc. If Page's were to be rated for friendliness, absolutely they would merit five stars.
BTW, this thing about Ohio reveals an outright prejudice towards the many good people who have moved here and made this area their home!
MBayasud suffers from an acute case of sour grapes. Page's has been in business for years and have always treated my family well. Probably Mbayasud is from Ohio.
Have not been able to have a piercing for a few decades now because it seemed no matter what earrings I tried, instant infection. Went in and talked to J. And he helped me pick out titanium neometal earrings, and two weeks later, still no infection! Appreciated the time taken to explain everything too. Cheers!
Hey guys, we're sorry but this write-up is incorrect on the Occasional Milkshake! They played last week in The Alley, it was awesome. As much as we'd love to have them back in here with us they are not playing on Friday night. Mark Bryan and his band are incredible musicians, and great people.
We'll have all the NCAA Tourney games on the big screens and would love to have you in, fun atmosphere!
Have a great weekend!
