New Dream Catering is more like a new nightmare. Throughout the entire planning process, Sarah and Eric were absolutely attentive, answered every email, helped me with anything I needed, and made me feel secure with my decision to hire them. Too bad that the actual day that mattered, our wedding day, ruined every single nice thing I could ever say about them. On our wedding day, they completely ignored what was written on and agreed upon in our contract. First and foremost, they ran out of food. That's right. We gave them our final numbers two weeks before the wedding, 15 people didn't even show up to our event, so you would think we would have plenty of food, right? Wrong. New Dream still didn't have enough food for our guests who were in attendance, let alone for the ones who were accounted for but never showed. We had several family members and friends who didn't get to eat b/c of this mishap on New Dream's part. Also, in our contract, we were supposed to have a build your own salad bar with a variety of nuts, fruits, dressings, etc, but this did not exist. Instead, New Dream took it upon themselves to change the station (without my knowledge) and pre-make all of the salads themselves with one kind of dressing and no variety at all. They were all the same and in no way met the terms of our contract. Also, we ordered a specific type of soda, were promised this soda on more than one occasion, were told not to worry about the soda, yet it was completely MIA at the wedding. Instead, they took it upon themselves to substitute it with something else that I didn't order without consulting me about it. In fact, they never said a word about it until I questioned them as to where it was. When they responded to my inquiry, their answer was sorry we couldn't find it. Really? Really?!? That soda had been on our contract for a year yet they claimed they couldn't find it. That's why my 84 year old grandmother didn't get to enjoy her favorite drink at our wedding because of New Dream's inability to pre-plan. Worst of all, they then left the drink I didn't order for my family to clean up after the wedding. So now, I have bottles and bottles of a drink I don't want taking up space in my guest room. As for the rest of the bar when it came to our specialty cocktail that was supposed to be a martini, they did not train their bar staff properly, and my guests ended up getting disgustingly stiff drinks served on the rocks in martini glasses. We also had a fish station at our wedding; however, the fish was by no means fresh, and was so old and fishy, that myself and several of my guests were unable to eat it. There were also a slew of other things that were either written in our contract or promised to us via email, yet were completely ignored by New Dream Catering. Also, our event was supposed to last for 6 hours, yet they pulled our late night snack station 45 minutes early, so my new husband and I never got to enjoy it. Lastly, we were promised a basket at the end of the night which contained samples of all of our food, but again, this was something that was also completely promised yet ignored. I'm not sure why they thought it was appropriate to completely ignore the stipulations of our contract and make substitutions without my consent, but they absolutely did and made no apologies about it. After reading other's reviews, I'm assuming they are just unprofessional and have absolutely no idea how to run a successful business. When I tried contacting them to discuss the contract issues, they responded in detail with one email and had nothing to give me but excuses. They then continuously blew me off and gave me the run around, so much so that I now have handed the situation over to my attorney and fully intend to pursue their breach of contract. After the thousands of dollars that we spent on our wedding and the countless hours we spent perfecting it, New Dream Catering's lack of planning and poor decision making ruined our event and reinstated my belief that true customer service doesn't exist in this world any more. If you are planning to work with New Dream Catering, I would highly recommend that you get everything in writing. Trust me...you will end up needing in the end.
Way over priced for mediocre food. If you can open a jar and cook boxed pasta, save your money and eat at home.
Clients and staff beware.....Eric Gaffin has refused to pay his staffing vendor for events worked over 6 months ago. In my most recent communications with him, he claims he does not have the money to pay the $650 owed despite the fact that he has still been working events. He has also recently been evicted from his office. There is a pending court case against him for the past payment due and he has been reported to the Better Business Bureau.
Brides: Please save yourself a HUGE headache and RUN! I do not want our experience to happen to anyone, not even my worst enemy on such an important day as your wedding!! The planning, meetings and professionalism PRIOR to the wedding were wonderful. We were so pleased and so excited! The tasting was great and we had heard and read fabulous reviews. Until this day I see the same great reviews, but most are from 2010. Ironic that the reviews get worse in the present day! New Dream is NOT what they used to be and funny that the negative reviews on here and other sites share the same opinions as us! You'd think he reads these and would care about his reputation and livelihood and do everything possible to prevent the same mistake happening over and OVER again! The owner and chef did not take any responsibility for how cold and terrible the food was on our wedding day. In fact, not only did he not take responsibility for his actions and what he was paid to do, but he actually blamed our guests for not taking food fast enough. He also said he put the food out when he was supposed to based on the timeline of events. Um, if things are running behind it's called BEING FLEXIBLE! Even if the wedding timeline was behind "on paper," it was not so far behind that the food would be freezing cold if it was heated up properly to begin with! The food was barely heated, there was no fluff or presentation of the display of food and the staff he hired was less than stellar. Sarah, the catering manager did not work our wedding as there were 2 other weddings that night besides ours. She was wonderful to work with however. Whoever WAS the catering manager with Eric at our wedding, didn't know what she was doing either to have let cold food come out. So not only was the product terrible, but New Dream lacks the customer service of making this situation right by admitting their mistakes and even possibly returning some money.
Specifics on food:
Mac N Cheese-dry penne pasta that is not mac n cheese at all
Shrimp and Grits-ice cold. So cold that the whole thing came out of the glass
Biscuits-ICE cold, made ahead and froze most likely to explain why some were so cold they were frozen. We ordered three kinds and no one could tell the difference between the three which either means we didn't get what we asked or they were so bad and mushy that you couldn't tell.
Bridal Party did not get a sampling of passed apps as they were promised since they missed cocktail hour for pictures
Passed apps-bacon wrapped scallops and stuffed mushrooms were a hit and I heard a lot of compliments
Pros: If you do need something extra like bringing in your own food for a station or surprise for guests or want your cake cut, he didn't charge for it. At least he didn't when we signed in the fall of 2010...
If you have already signed up with him, get EVERYTHING in writing or cancel if you can: how the food will be displayed, how it will be heated, how it will be KEPT heated (you don't bring out cold food and expect two little sterno's to heat it up!) and any other detail.
Totally not at all what you thought you were going to get. Very disappointed and so were my guests. New Dream should be called New Nightmare
I have been going here for a year now, mainly because of the Gluten Free Crepes that they started doing, which was amazing for me since I have a gluten intolerance. I moved down the street from the cafe this year and was so excited to be so close. To my surprise, they had changed the gluten free availability to only once a week on Fridays. I work 8-6 mon-fri, so this is not a possibility for my great Sat/Sun brunches that I used to love to go to. I also recently used a Groupon and was a little confused at my charges, and instead of explaining it the cashier explained nothing to me, kept staring blankly at me, didn't help me out at all, and honestly just made me feel bad. I haven't been back since, don't think I ever will.

Good service doesn't require "Southern sugar coated niceness", whatever the fuck that is. A little respect goes a long way.
Went for lunch. Music was way too loud and 80's pop music just isn't my thing to listen to by the "relaxing" water. Of course, the louder the music, the louder the restaurant as everyone has to speak up louder just to be heard. I would call the ambiance "early mess hall". Ordered Blackened Chicken Alfredo. Chicken wasn't blackened at all. Just chicken with some kind of "blackenish" spice festooned up on it. Salad came with a croissant (bit odd, but ok) that was "drizzled with honey". Why? Blue Cheese dressing was a color not of this earth and inexplicably sweet. I can't take enough Tums to kill the heartburn (not sure if from the food or the amazing amount of money I paid for the pleasure of dining there).
The last 2 times I've been there, the staff have been lackluster at best. It's close to where I work, but I've been scouting and trying other places since August. It's too expensive for what you get and the staff need several lessons in customer service or something. Or maybe better staff should be hired by management?
I went to Queen St. Grocery recently and had a terrible experience...as stated in previous posts, the owner was unfriendly and engaged in a 5-minute personal conversation with another worker while I stood at the counter, 2 feet from her, waiting to order. As I approached the counter for the 2nd time to purchase another drink, she did the same thing with a wine rep. Not apologetic or friendly at all when she finally decided to acknowledge my presence each time. Next, I was presented with the most bland hummus ever created...and a soggy crepe arrived 20 minutes later. The place wasn't busy at all and I left $20 poorer & very disappointed. Maybe I caught her on a bad day (she was complaining about commuting from Hilton Head), but I still won't be back.

This place should be avoided, its in a sketchy part of town where nobody could feel safe at night in and the atmosphere inside is even more depressing. One wooden table and a scattering of random chairs. The chairs are mostly just steel or rusted metal. There was one chair with a thin cushion that looked like they got it out of a medical landfill.
Pro - The chalkboard menu in the kitchen area was a unique touch and was well done.
The food is incredibly limited, salty and expensive. Very small portions for sandwiches that are in the $13 neighborhood. No thanks.
The very limited menu is hampered by the fact that everything has some sort of 'non-traditional" ingredient thrown in. I understand trying to be different, but it just comes off as desperate. Why not just focus on making an awesome *REAL* cuban instead of trying to be cute with it?
One upside was that parking was free and plentiful, didn't really see anyone else eating there so I got a front row spot. Whoooo.
The antique cash register, cabinet, the mason jars, it just screamed hipster phony.
Staff was friendly though, so they've got that going for them.
I don't know where these people have had barbeque before. Quite possibly the worst BBQ I've ever had. You eat it for days (burping it back up) and you feel sick after leaving there. The fried Chicken is again the worst I've ever had. I guess people just like it because you get 10 pounds of food on your plate. The sides don't help out. The tea is good.
I'm confused by the hoopla about "Bottles", but more so that they felt compelled to have not 1, but 2 Grand Openings in the last 5 weeks! Why is that? I have to admit I so looked forward to a store like this coming to East of the Cooper for quite sometime like a lot of people. So, when I recently read in late November that they were having another Grand Opening Celebration I decided to take a few of my attorneys during our lunch break. I have to be honest...much to all of our dismay we were extremely disappointed with the wine and beer inventory as well as the selections we saw. The wine and beer sections are smaller than what I would've expected from the marketing/advertising I saw, but the liquor store was beyond too large. I guess the old saying is spot on in our opinion of Bottles, "don't always believe what you hear or read"!
Positives: Pricing is fair, but not great; staff is friendly!
Negatives: Wine and Beer inventory and selections; Walk-in Cigar Humidor was non-existent with tiny inventory and selections; No place to sit down if you wanted too; Bad location and extremely difficult to get in and out of Moultrie Plaza!
I would really like to provide a review. Unfortunately when I stopped by with my wife last Sunday afternoon, the bartender was busy working the ladies sitting at the bar, and the only visible waitress was hanging out speaking with her friends. After 10 minutes of being ignored we left and went to Obrions for dinner...so much for Triangle...just too many places in the area to waste time with this.
Since the reviews have been 50/50 - as an optimist (and a fan of the WA La Fontana) I had hopes. I'm writing this as I now have hopes of not being sick. The wine was passible - no liquor license. The pasta "special" - ravioli of spinach, ricotta and walnuts - $22. The pasta was probably made 2-3 days ago. The "cream" sauce was brownish-grey and as thick as mashed potatoes. The Saltimbocca was drenched in turkey gravy (Cisco have a sale?) We tried a quarter of our plates. Even though Antonio, our server, was charming and attentive, he knew the problems had no solution and advised the chef 'knew little English' and 'might be uncaring' . He was delicate about the possible encounter. We wanted to like this place and call it an off night, maybe visit again for the red gravy, our check ($22 for ravioli?) warranted a talk with the chef / cook. He started with "everyone else loves the food" to "I'm very busy (four tables in the restaurant, we were the last to enter @ 6:30 p.m.) I'll forgive a restaurant for an off night, but not a chef / cook for not caring. Full disclosure - he didn't let us pay for our meal in spite our willingness to do so, but his curse dismissal of us gave the initiative for this review so others can judge. However, if any old school restaurant is looking for a dedicated server, seek out Antonio - he's charming.
Clearly whomever is giving this place high ratings must be the owner or an employee. This place is terrible. Frankly the very worst service, food and management I have ever experienced. Your order will take forever to come out and when it does, don't expect it to be correct. I wish I had read reviews before going to Carolina Crust because I would have saved myself a lot of time and aggravation. Also, the owner will not hesitate to yell and cuss at customers- she was yelling at people at a table when we were in there. And she said negative things about Hanahan which I thought was very rude and offensive. We weren't even the objects of her rage but I would never ever go back to this place.
This was the worst eating establishment I have ever experienced in the Charleston, SC area. The owner/management was the most unprofessional and rudest person I have ever come into contact with. Our office went to lunch to celebrate a birthday and she made it a horrible day for all of us. We waited almost 2 hours to be served and half of our party still did not receive their orders before we left, other orders were wrong, and the food was not all that great. She refused to cancel their orders and took her time giving the rest of us our checks so that we could return to work. After some very rude and belligerent comments, which included cuss words, from the owner/management, we paid our tabs and left without having to call the police to help us out. I would not recommend this place to anyone that wants a positive experience. The owner is a horrible young lady who has a very bad attitude!!
Based on my recent dining experience at Oak, I feel that giving the restaurant one star is being generous. This was by far one of the worst dining experiences that I have had lately in Charleston.
I had the carpaccio of beef as my appetizer, which was just okay at best. With things like truffle vinaigrette and parmigiano-reggiano listed in the description, I was expecting much more flavor than what was actually there. For dinner, my husband chose the porterhouse, which he described as the saltiest piece of steak he had ever eaten. I decided the burger looked like a tasty option, but after asking for medium well for the temperature, the burger came out with a barely warm, very pink center. The waitress gladly took the burger back to be recooked, but the kitchen just put the patty that I had cut back on the grill, which resulted in an overcooked dry burger and very wilted lettuce. Not to mention, the other three people in my group had already finished eating, so the burger went untouched.
Since there were several in our dining group, we ordered the lobster mac & cheese and the bacon mac & cheese as sides for the table. I think my husband described it best when he said the bacon mac & cheese tasted like Easy Mac with imitation bacon bits, which I guess is fine for a child, but I was expecting a little bit more. The $17 lobster mac and cheese tasted more like orange powder cheese poured over orzo pasta, with imitation crab meat added. Truly a disappointment on both accounts.
The bill ended up being over $300, and I think all of us left very disappointed.
Also, Brett Mckee has been gone for a while, yet the website still mentions him as if he still works there. And, the "comment cards" provided with the check were just old wine menus that had been cut to serve as a comment card. Pretty tacky if you ask me!
After this experience, I know the next time my husband or friends are craving steak, we will be visiting the boys at Hall's for a better dinner. Truly a shame that a restaurant that used to be such a staple in Charleston has ended up like this.
I didn't go to the fair this year or any other year. I can't believe that the Coastal County Fair would allow an animal act such as with the Bear to be included. I DETEST that type of attraction and would not give them my business.
What happened to Manny's? I remember it as a great place to get an gyros sandwich... now it's just some dried up meat splapped on stale bread with gross sauce.
Time to find good Greek food, when is the festival?
Agreed. It's 2011, and the fair still lets morons walk around blowing cigarette smoke at people.
Wise up, exchange club, make designated smoking areas and the rest smoke free.
Especially the amphitheater, where people are packed in to see the bands.
Designated smoking areas will only slightly inconvenience a few and greatly improve the fair experience for many.
