In a very competitive restaurant town, they are creating food that cannot be found elsewhere in charleston. Very original flavors, great location, prompt service. This is a restaurant I can eat at a dozen times( and I have) and never order the same thing.
We recently visited Charleston for our 25th wedding anniversary. I had read the Trip Advisor reveiws and we made reservations for this fine restaurant. It far exceeded our expectations! The staff here was amazingly helpful and friendly, while still very professional. The food was impeccable! My husband had the whole fish and I got the chicken kabob. We also loved the pickled turnips. We are so glad we choose to eat at Leyla's.
Lana is my favorite. I could eat there every night. Food is always good, nice choice of Mediterranean dishes on the menu, none too weird, great service. The place is not too big or too small. Try to get a booth.
Had such a tremendous experience at Sermet's last night on Daniel Island. My sister and all twelve of her co-workers from Boone, NC joined me for a great evening of food and drinks! The food was absolutely incredible and Morat's service was impeccable. From the appetizers (mussels served in a ginger lemon curry broth and fresh ceviche with just the right amount of of lime and cilantro) to the dinner entrees was well worth the few extra miles to drive to Daniel Island. I had the special of the night, pan-seared grouper (fresh off the boat) breaded with panko, honey dijon and thyme along with sweet potato, gorgonzola cheese and maple walnut raviloli drizzled with aged balsamic and also local fresh vegetables cooked perfectly. I would recommend this restaurant to any and everyone in Charleston!
Delicious, well priced, though a little crowded for lunch time. Definitely worth the walk!
Good luck Sam. Great design for the place. I really liked the enviroment inside. the menu looks good, and I am sure the cruise crowd will like it as well. Hookas are also a great idea. Nothing better than hooka and a cup of turkish coffee under the Charleston sky!
It is wonderful. The chef changed about four months ago, and since then the quality has gone way up. They have some of the best falafels we ever encountered (better than some well-known places in Manhattan, crunchy outside with a soft and delicious inside). The ingredients are very fresh. I particularly love their kibbi; the hummos is very creamy and stands out. For lunch, the falafel combo sandwiches with slightly browned cauliflower are a treat. For dinner, try any lamb dish with a glass of Lebanese red wine (I was surprised by how nice the wine is and how well it goes with the dishes). Desserts are scrumptious too and freshly made. The interior decor has also improved, with some interesting wall hangings, and shelves with olive oil and other middle eastern goods for sale (we tried the olive oil and it is quite nice). I disagree with one of the postings: the atmosphere and the people running the place are friendly and relaxed, I'd definitely recommend eating in to fully appreciate the food.
I eat here multiple times a week, sometimes twice in a day. The Falafel and hummos is delicious as well as their many assortments of salads. Heart of palm, tabouleh and fatoosh are my favorites. Give them a shot, the owner Samir is very friendly and always has a smile on his face. *** Vegetarian Friendly ***
I recently relocated to the Charleston area and have been dying to try out as many restaurants as possible. LANA has been the absolute best of all. The atmosphere is wonderful, intimate, low key. The food was fabulous, nice take on mediterranean. Can't wait to go back!
Wash of the everyday with a vacation at Muse. The wine bar is the perfect petit spot to avoid the high heels & cologne of other obvious night spots. Muse quietly oozes conversation, charm mixed with Matts magic tricks & killer drinks not to be outdone by cuisine that reminds you its heavenly to nibble & not merely eat food.
This is the best place I've found in years in Charleston! Fun, friendly and really outstanding food. Indoors, outdoors or at the bar. I can't wait to come back!!!!!
My husband and I stumbled upon the place by accident but was very glad we did. We had the special gyro of the day, with this amazing feta sauce/spread and lots of meat. Absolutely delicious! We also tried a small treat (cant' remember the name, but had pistachios in it), that I have to say was little overpriced. Other than that, it was great and we'll definitely be going back!
Let me begin by saying that my wife and I lived in the Middle East for two years. While living in Jerusalem, many locals invited us into their homes for wonderful Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine. Not only did they share meals with us, they taught my wife how to prepare the local food. Over those two years we learned that Middle Eastern food is extremely tasty and very healthy as well.
In the 20+ years since living in the Middle East, whenever traveling, we always look for Middle Eastern/Mediterranean restaurants. We’ve found some pretty good ones in large cities like Atlanta, Metro DC. Now we have no need to look any further. Welcome to Ali Baba Mediterranean Deli & Catering on Daniel Island. For my family it is a dream come true to have the real thing in town. The prices are right, the atmosphere, friendliness and hospitality remind us so much of what we experienced during our time in Jerusalem.
I really hate to limit my recommendations because everything is absolutely delicious. But be sure not to miss the some of the best kibbi I’ve ever had along with an absolutely wonderful heart of palm salad. The grape leaves are outstanding and the chicken kebob melts in your mouth. This food is freshly prepared and Ali Baba’s has quite a variety. The vegetarian has many choices and for those who don’t feel adventurous there’s even a half pound burger on the menu. We’ve eaten in at Ali Baba or picked up there countless times and I still don’t think we’ve gotten to try everything on the menu. If you want authentic Middle Eastern/Mediterranean cuisine, you simply can’t go wrong with Ali Baba on Daniel Island! It’s a 5 star all the way!
We love to eat lunch at Sermets, and for some reason it has always been on a Sunday. We love their food but for some reason their bartenders are terrible. We always sit at the bar, perfect for people watching on King Street. The bartenders are very unfriendly. Never greet you, never give you a wine list without asking, and seem very slow on service of drinks. I fully understand that they are also servicing service bar, but if Sunday lunch is always busy, then maybe an extra bartender? Didn't even get a thank you this time. It's a shame as the food is fresh and great tasting, but service and surly bartenders can keep me away.
Always an enjoyable experience. Good food (had shish tawook and kofta so far) and a kind, attentive staff. Go donate at the Red Cross and reward yourself with a good meal next door.
I had heard mixed reviews in about Lana in the past, but was impressed by both the food and service I received last night. The food is solid, unpretentious fare... you won't find amazing presentations or over the top ingredients, but my gnocchi and my girlfriend's risotto were both delicious and a great value considering the overall quality and ample volume of food included... An 'appetizer' portion of mussels (in a basic but delicious white wine sauce) could easily exceed entree portions at similar restaurants. Our server was friendly and prompt but not intrusive.
Overall, this isn't the sort of place you go to to be amazed or to impress, but it's a great spot for a filling, casual evening of great food...
Great falafels! Food is very good. I recommend taking out because the atmosphere is not great.
I feel kinda bad because I have written so many bad reviews of eateries recently, but this is actually what prompted me to review. I had a yucky meal at Sermet's the other night, however, they did make it right. The short of it is, is that I ordered the Calamari, and it was absolutely dis-gust-ing. My friends said it was good, but even she took a bite and said "wow - whoever cooked this is really off tonight" It was bland, chewy, and tasted old and frozen.
I then ordered a main course, which I did not like either. There was rocky sand in the vegetables, seriously. In the end, the waitress comped the food, which I didnt ask for, but which I thought was appropriate. I wound up tipping her what the food would have been anyhow, because I thought it was right to do that. And she was nice about it.
I would go back, yes...I somehow sense that this was an off night. Maybe a line cook who broke up with his GF, or who is just having a shitty day. It happens.
Nice hot, toasted bread, good olive oil. Nice cocktails. Cute hostess (tho she could smile)

Oh and I just read the review by Rokko...its interesting that this person also thought it might have been an "off day" as well. hmmm
Boring food. I ordered the roasted tomato soup, which had a decent flavor but was a bit one-note: creamy. I also ordered the grilled salmon salad; the "poached pears" were just pears out of can.
One of the worst experiences I've had at any restaurant downtown. Went on a Saturday while shopping on King St. with a party of 5, and 3 of us had problems with our entree's. The fish I had was burnt on the underside, while a friend of mine had chicken that tasted raw and flavorless. Just awful in every respect and the management did not seem to much care when he came to our table, thinking we were a bunch of tourists he'd never see again. Little does he know we are all local foodies with a wide network of friends. They do not have a good reputation with locals is evident after talking to people about this, its evident they are out to grab the tourist shoppers on King St., and could care less if they come back.
