Really cool spot with amazing quality and variety of plants. Want an obscure heirloom varietal and all the knowhow you could need to make sure it thrives in our Charleston climate? Even if you want a standard item, this is the place to go. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun (not crowded, noisy, and hot like many of the garden stores in peak season), the plants are healthy and well marked, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
Bugby Hole was a popular anchorage on the Thames River for larger ships needing protection from storms and tides. The oxbow of the river at Bugby Marsh (Greenwich Peninsula) created this deep hole just outside of London where ships were required to fly their colors prior to entering the city. Numerous references to “Bugby Hole” or “Bugby Marsh” or “Bugby Reach” exist in shipping maps and Parliamentary records prior to the 1800s when some maps started to misspell the name as “Bugsby.” This is a common mispronunciation of our family name. “Bugby Marsh” was slow to be developed because it was a marsh and needed to be drained. The Dutch evidently helped to do that. Early artwork and maps shows it as a vacant stretch of ground, where the pirates were hung in gibbets away from businesses and homes but in plain view before starting an overseas journey. During the time of the East and West India Companies, Captain John Bugby was active in overseas shipping. There were other Captain Bugbys including Timothy and William around 1625. Popular use by the Bugbys being anchored in this location is what likely landed the name. They were evidently proud of having their family name being placed on “Bugby Hole” for river maps of the Thames in the early 1600s. The Bugby family of London had the money to invest in plantations at Montserrat, St. Croix, and South Carolina during that time. “Bugby Hole” was used as the name for these plantations in the West Indies, (Caribbean). Books by Daniel Defoe, the author of Moll Flanders, and his official British coastal guide, referenced “Bugby's Hole.” By 1665 naval maps and even a ship diary referenced “Bugby's Hole” during the London plague. “Bugby Reach” appeared on some maps on this stretch of the river. “Bugby Marsh” was named for the stretch of the river but no Bugby was ever a landowner there. Later maps continued to use the misspelling of Bugsby on the marsh and on the river after 1850. “Bugsby’s Way” in Greenwich at the O2 arena is a great tribute to the early history of the area. Save the trek to Market St. and pick up a sweet grass basket from Gigi,next to Gruber Farm stand. Small selection but great prices.
wish it was open on Sundays too.

Fantastic location and great vibe. I have gone to a couple of free events at this location and PBC has a great open air atmosphere.
So glad the prices come down on the garlic crabs now that they're in abundance.....also have fresh local shrimp and they are good...nothing like fresh seafood from our coast....the garlic crabs can be messy but are great and enjoyed them very much....

This is a great market that defines the meaning of sustainability by keeping it local. There are lots of vendors selling their amazing products in an easy to park, room to walk about, and fun atmosphere.
While I can appreciate the honorable gentleman's (anti-mike's peanuts) opinion. I have to agree to disagree. Granted he wasn't born here, but Mike has been in this area since the mid-90's which makes him as Charlestonian as anyone else. He's been featured on National Television for his products and his personality; He's sent his product overseas to the troops. The mayors of Charleston and North Charleston frequent his stand at the market. And he's been a fixture at the Charleston farmers market, Charleston Tea Plantation's First Flush festival and MUSC for years. Mike is notably gruff at times, and has a sarcastic wit (comically so), but at least you know without a doubt about his strength of character. His notoriety brings great credit to our beautiful city and its surrounding communities. Your comment smacks of a bias against "northerners", many of whom have contributed greatly to our ranking as one of the country top tourist destinations. Would you (anti-mike) be more comfortable if he dressed like Colonel Sanders?
One of the best Nurseries and garden centers in the area for all needs in regards to gardening and plant care.
peanuts are decent, Mike Shaughnessey is about as rude as they come. Typical NJ yankee coming down to the south to sell us fried food and talk terribly about our lifestyle. Hightly recommend you do not give your business to this hypocrite. He needs to take his negative attitude back to the north
Wonderful space for an event. Went to a Guerrilla Cuisine dinner there a couple of weeks ago and was surprised at how pretty the distillery hardware looks with the right lighting and how warm and comfortable the space was - especially for a warehouse and work site, at that (the bathrooms are a literally shining example). A few strategically placed pieces of art (big works well) and beautifully set tables were all that was needed to transform what would be a cavernous area in the back into a really cool, even elegant, venue. I know others worked hard to make that transformation and I WAS under the influence of some fabulous food, but the end result of GC & others' efforts highlighted the possibilities of the distillery space itself. The Striped Pig people proved very hospitable folks, dedicated to their craft and eager to share the process & results with willing fans. Sampled some powerful but oddly delicious moonshine & a more finished product. It is obvious that a great deal of thought went into making this space a welcoming place to hang out, whether for an event or just a visit.

• 11:30am-12:00pm: Janice Ryan-Bohac, PhD, Charleston Plant Breeding Co. will discuss a new kind of potato she has bred with optimized nutrition and flavor
• 12:00-12:30pm: Sodexo cooking demo including samples of sweet potato cheddar cake -ginger lime marinated shrimp and savory walnut kale
• 12:30-12:40pm: Reading of the Food Day proclamation by Mayor Pro Tem Dudley Gregorie
• 12:40-1:10pm: Celebrity Mr. /Ms. “SWEET” Potato head contest. Come cheer on local celebrities as they compete for bragging rights by crafting the most creative “Mr. or Ms. Sweet Potatohead”. Participating this year are David Quick, Post & Courier, Carolyn Murray, WCBD News 2, Debi Chard, WCSC Live 5 News, Jon Bruce, WCIV ABC News 4, Jay Shadix, 96.9 The Wolf, and Mike Seekings, Charleston City Council.
• 1:20-2:30pm: FUN FALL ACTIVITIES: spoon races, giant jump rope and sack races will get hearts racing and perhaps spark a competitive streak among participants

Heirloom herbs & vegetable starters will be available for sale by Humble Farms as will Urban Farm t-shirts for sale – assorted styles and sizes. $1 off when purchased during the event, (cash or check only).
In keeping with the theme of sustainable food, non-perishable donations are requested to help the Lowcountry Food Bank “Feed the Need” and will be combined with the sweet potatoes that will be harvested during the day.
