Bagel Nation is dirty, I will give you that. And yes, sometimes the staff appear to be extremely busy and can be less then friendly. A few coats of paint could go a long way in this place.
However the food is good, and the coffee is even better. They offer the best bagels I have found so far in Charleston. Not sure why your eggs were so terrible. I had an egg, ham & cheese bagel for lunch today and it was delicious, as always.
Could Bagel Nation use some renovations? Absolutely.
Will that stop myself and many others from visiting frequently? Nope.
The restaurant needs major overhaul with cleaning and decor. The floors are mud brown with splattered paint. The walls need the holes fixed, wiped down and repainted. The tables were dirty and covered with chicken vinyl table clothes. The servers looked like they just had gotten out of bed. The lady who took our order looked like she had been rolling around in hay. Seriously! No one was friendly or even cracked a smile. My food was not edible! I had eggs that tasted like hospital food, hashbrowns that were soggy and my bagel, which was the frazzle, had burnt onions on the bottom. It was all terrible!!
The whole place needs to be shut down, restaffed with nice people, cleaned from top to bottom and repainted!
We used to have a Bagel Nation in Summerville, many years ago, and it was wonderful! So my husband and I were excited to see there was one in Mount
Pleasant and made the effort to go there during our IOP stay. We regret it and won't be back!!
Great food! But service is lacking in terms of wait time. If 4 or more people are in the restaurant at any given time, expect a 15-20 minute wait to get your food!
Bagel Cafe has the best freshly made Bagels. They used to be known as Bagel Nation but it is now independently owned so they changed their name to Bagel Cafe. Same fresh bagels and yummy sandwiches!
Bagel Cafe on James Island (formerly known as Bagel Nation) has the best freshly made bagels. They recently changed their name to Bagel Cafe but they have the same great bagels and sandwiches. Love the flavored cream cheeses. Sooo good!!
Saturday morning bagel sandwich place to go!!! I won't go anywhere else.
I believe you're editor might need to check their facts: The write up about the shop is from the "best of" in the city paper and it was for Bagel Nation not Bagel Cafe. In addition Bagel Nation's adress is 1909 Hwy 17 N. Mt. Pleasant. It also says Bagel Cafe has been voted best of year after year?? I believe Bagel Nation has held that title for some time... Trust me Bagel Nation is not now known as Bagel Cafe. It's still Bagel Nation...?? However, there is no longer a Bagel Nation in James Island. The store open there is named Bagel Cafe. I personally have not tried their bagels, but they're not Bagel Nations.
This cafe is definitely geared toward the average college student, not necessarily a tourist looking for memorable meal. It's great food for its price and its location is perfect for a student on-the-go but I wouldn't say it's particularly any better than just any bagel shop. (Better than Einsteins and in my opinion Breuggars which are both withing blocks of campus)
went into the bagel shop two times and ordered egg sandwiches both times they were delivered to me wrapped in tinfoil with no wax paper so the sandwiches became soggy and wet. I thought to myself if they are to cheap use wax paper i wonder what other corners their cutting. my wife received the turkey panini which came highly recommended by the staff, the sandwich came out and was cold in the middle, the turkey tasted like it had been sitting in A bucket for a few days. overall highly disatisfied, cut my losses at 15 bucks and decided that would be the last time. if your thinking about going here do yourself a favor and go to bagel nation, this place won't be around long.
Way too expensive. Need to justify the price with an acceptable amount of food.
Great customer service. I usually go w/ a bacon egg and pepperjack sammich. If you add an extra egg its only $.75, so that's usually my go to move. Definitely the most pricey bagel shop downtown, but by far the best.
The food is very good, but since they charge for tea refills, i don't go very often. It can get very pricey if you have a couple of refills of tea. You might as well go to lunch at Snob and get full service fine dining at the same price.
I’ve had the turkey and the ham and brie paninis and both were great
I thoroughly enjoyed my everything bagel with jalapeno cheddar cream cheese. It was heavenly.
just okay.
I went this morning and got a cinnamon-raisin bagel with plain cream cheese and a small coffee. It was $5. The bagel was smaller than normal. The bagel wasn't very flavorful and there was enough cream cheese for 3 people on it. I had to wipe most of it off. The coffee was good, definitely comparable to other coffee shops around- although not anywhere near Modica's standards. (ok, so I'm still bummed that Modica closed). Overall, nothing wowed me, and I'm not sure if it's worth the money.
The food is good, but TOO EXPENSIVE for what you get. $8 for a bacon, egg, & cheese bagel with coffee is absurd.
so accommodating and friendly! the bagels are small but tasty, and they make the bagel sandwiches fresh to order (and add ingredients specially for you, if you want). the cold-pressed coffee is a nice treat as well! I definitely recommend this, such a nice atmosphere.. and take your order to the college's sculpture garden for a nice quiet setting!
Had a plain bagel with cream cheese today. I was informed not to toast it since they were "still warm". Not only was it not still warm, it tasted old. While crispy, it was quite dense and tough, small, and much too much cream cheese for the bagel's size. The cream cheese also wasn't salted enough or flavorful. For $2.65, that's the last one I'll be having.
Re: “The Bagel Shop”
This is the best bagel in Charleston. Whoever is behind the baking definitely knows what they're doing and consistently cranks out perfect bagels every time. In addition to the bagels, they make all their own flavored cream cheeses in house which have all been delicious. They have a menu of amazing breakfast and lunch sandwiches or you can build your own out of their deli case. I also love that they offer Taylor Ham which I had never tried before a friend recommended it to me and now I cannot turn back. Give it a try griddled with an egg and cheese on a bagel - you will thank me. Also they offer fresh Nova lox which is nearly impossible to find at a bagel shop around here.
They have a full espresso bar as well as delicious Intelligenista house coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. The only critique I would offer is the size of the dining room is rather tiny. So if you go doing a prime time, I would probably plan on getting your food to go. But wherever you sit down to enjoy your food, you will not be disappointed!
