Stars was a lovely place, like many in Charleston (we are so spoiled). Did not have any food there, but wine and beer menu were vast, but seriously overpriced especially for being on tap. Was disappointed that they didnt serve food on the rooftop, but an overall a nice experience.
Decent bar food. Not good by any means, but not horrible. Service was tolerable. You won't hate going here, but there's really no special reason to go there either.
The food's usually pretty good, but the service is so, so bad. I've been six or seven times in the last year or so and I still have yet to get the sides that I actually ordered with my entree. Doesn't matter what day we go or what meal we're eating...it's kind of amazing. They need to implement some kind of ticket system, because what they're doing behind the counter right now clearly isn't working.
I will preface this review by saying we went on Father's Day, so I knew it would be 'blown up' with people. I arrived 30 minutes ahead of my group to put our name on the list b/c we had 7 people in our party & I figured they would need to combine 2 tables or something, so I was trying to think ahead. The hostess looked put out when i said there were 7 people and said things like, "well, we dont really have tables for 7, can you split tables?" and "if everyone isnt here when we call you, we have to skip you." I appreciated the honesty, but not the attitude it came with. Well, when they called us, 5 of the 7 folks were present (the other 2 were trying to find a parking spot). We explained this and when the hostess walked away, she said "Well, I cant hold a 7 top for people who arent here" to a waitress. 5 of the 7 of us WERE right there, and we were going to sit and order coffees/mimosas, etc. They sat us at a 5 top and told us the other 2 would have to sit 'over there' -- totally across the room. SO, she wasnt holding a 7 top, then, right?! We actually asked the waitress if there was any way to squeeze 2 extra chairs at our current table & she was nice enough to suggest we add the adjacent 2 top she had (couple there were paying bill). Once we got settled and ordered, the food came out pretty quickly and was decent enough for breakfast fare, although nothing 'spectacular'. The other posters are right, this place really seems to cater to tourists and shoots for quantity over quality experience. I hadnt been here in a while and probably would try other places before returning again.
Its Okay for SC, but by no means an "Authentic Jewish-Style deli" unless that style modifier means "Oh they have some Jewish deli items done passably. Okay, nothing special, nothing worth a drive for, but if you live in the area it works
I finally made it into the peninsula to visit Craftsmen Kitchen, after a couple month wait for opening day. When you first walk in the door, you can tell there was a lot of money invested into design and decor. I really enjoyed the ambiance with the focus around a beautiful series of bars. There was plenty of space inside, and also an outdoor area with 4 large picnic tables.
The menu was very basic. One side had appetizers and smaller dishes. The other side featured more entree-like options. The waitress also gave us a large tap/bottled drink menu. My first thought, after glancing at the drink menu, was that it contained a lot of confusion. They tried to split things up by flavor profile, but didn't really get it right. There was a section for hoppy/IPA type beers, a section for local brews, a section for malt forward beers, and one other that I can't remember. The IPA/Hoppy section was fine, and featured many great brews. I am not sure there was a reason to separate the locals from the style based menu, as we didn't know exactly what flavor profile fit some of the local brews. The malty beer section was a complete cluster. There were pale ales (Hoppy), belgians, browns, and stouts all mixed in there. Those styles do not all fit the same flavor profile. I would have preferred them to not worry about style and just list all beers by brewery, or perhaps take time to separate by more than a couple flavor profiles. I didn't take time to check if most of the beers listed on the menu were actually on tap, but I didn't have any issues with my orders. The beer selection, while numerous, was not really impressive for a craft beer bar. It seemed like the had the normal basic offerings from many breweries, without carrying many seasonals or limited releases. I found it difficult to pick out a beer I really wanted to drink, but I am probably pickier than most patrons. I did like the option to have 8oz or 16oz pours, but I am not 100% sure the tumblers they use actually hold 16oz. The prices were a touch high, but that could be par for the course when you are a block from the market. The beers were served in clean glassware and seemed to be about the right temperature. My only suggestion there would be to use proper glassware for the style, but that is really asking for a lot.
Once we had a few drinks, we decided to order a few food items. We wanted to try two appetizers and a couple sandwiches. We ordered the Scotch Eggs (hard to find in the low country) and General Tso's Chicken Wings. The wings were really tasty, and they nailed the sauce. It was a nice mix of sweet and spice, and went well with the base crispy wings. The scotch eggs were not exactly what I am used to, but still very good. You only get one large egg, cut in half, so take note if you are sharing with a few people. My main course was the burger, which is made with house ground beef and some added pork belly in the mix. Pork belly makes for some delicious burgers, but also prevents you from getting a rare or medium-rare burger. It took quite a while to receive my burger, but we were in a large party. The burger comes with some thick cut fried potato rounds, but you only get 4 of these. If you are really hungry, it is better that you order more than just the burger. I did enjoy the seasoning on the burger, and would eat it again. I do wish there was more of a side with this. The other dish we got was the crispy pork belly sandwich. Basically, this is a piece of fried pork belly, between two pieces of toast, with a fried runny egg on top. I am not sure why the egg goes on top, as it makes the dish excessively messy. The belly was a touch overcooked, but the whole sandwich was still pretty good. This also cam with the small side of fried potato rounds.
Overall, I think this is a place worth checking out if you like craft beer. They are still very new and will probably be working on things like tap offerings and food. I think my expectations were a bit too high, due to years of drinking craft beer. I will likely return to see if they fall into a groove with food and beer selection. I wish them luck and much success. I am still happy to see another craft-centric bar in downtown Charleston, which covers a growing market of better beer drinkers.
So we've established for certain that Ryan Leaf owns this place?
I'm suprised too - thought the dinner menue was over priced and certainly not enough food - Brunch was a much better value. My wife and i are shocked to see essentaily New York City prices at many of the new spots on upper King with out the quality- This includes The Grocery
I'm kind of suprised at the high star reviews too... The Grocery is good but it's not one of the greats. I would spend the same amount of money on a different restaurant. Good food, not awesome.
Stopped in the other night for a drink and menu read.
I had to put the phone light on menu to read, tiny lettering & dim light.
Ended up ordering the Beef Carpaccio and the Lamb/Pork wontons from the 'Starters'.
The carpaccio was awesome, just the right amount of heat from the chile, and literally melts in your mouth.
The wontons were delicious as well. Served piping hot and tasty as well.
Now the bad part. These 2 apps were $14 combined. The carpaccio was served on a plate about the size of a tea saucer or dessert plate, paper thin & one layer thick. Big on flavor - short on quantity. The wontons...5 in all, served on the same size plate, again, a small portion for the price.
Add to this a $5.50 can of beer and it starts to add up fast. I also found it odd that there was no draught beer. I know cans are all hip these days...but really $5.50? Dinner plates start around $12(it is a very limited menu) and climb up from there...with your can of beer in an old gas station. Obviously, some love goes into the food but if you have an appetite, or give due consideration to the value of a dollar, this may not be the place for you.
good food, but too crowded now. Also, sad to say the owner, though Irish, has NO idea how to cook a proper scone!

Wow, I'm pretty surprised at how well-reviewed the Grocery is here. I went with a group of 10, and none of us was particularly pleased with the food. The service was great and the decor was nice, but the food was overpriced for what it was and I feel like there are other restaurants downtown with a similar concept and better execution. I will not be going back.
Our dinner was less than inspiring, the kabobs were ok but boring, the wings were the same as was the burger. The food was just very mediocre. Their house red wine was decent and a relatively good buy. The cocktail I had was unique and I enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty loud inside and outside, but service was good. I will be back to try the all day breakfast options, though.
I was so excited to try out Ms. Rose's and walked away disappointed.
The food was so so but the service was terrible. Our server forgot our appitizer, let our water glasses sit empty and we had to remind her we ordered a second round of cocktails.
We ordered the gnocchi and a ruben. I asked to subsitute the protien in the gnocchi and our server said there was an upcharge, which i expected but it was her delivery that threw me off. The gnocchi was good, lots of flavor. The ruben was just average. I will give them credit for their fries. They were awsome.
I won't rush back anytime soon.
Love the style and the location is great in Avondale! Great beer selection and the food that I ordered was very good, albeit the presentation was a little lacking. I was however, a little disappointed in the margaritas. They taste wonderful, slightly sweet and tart, but when I think of a Mexican restaurant, I really picture large margaritas - not a small cynlinder glass filled with mostly ice. I want a giant margarita - at a good price. Otherwise, they seem successful and I hope that it continues!
The food I tried was bland. I tried the chicken taco and the Baja fish taco. Both were bland compared to Taco Boy. My friend had the Grilled Mahi taco and the Carne Asada taco. He agreed that the food needed more punch. The service was great and I liked the surf videos. Won't be back anytime soon.
I love going through the drive-thru at BBC, but the service inside the restaurant has been awful on the 3 occasions I've eaten there. I don't mind laid-back service, but in one visit, my waitress forgot multiple drinks, didn't put my order in at the same time as my dining companions', and wasn't at all apologetic. In an attempt to rush my food out, the kitchen delivered my "sautéed" fish almost entirely raw. To be fair, they did comp my meal - but I don't think I'll risk eating in, again.
I used to love Groucho's but I just went through the drive thru and ordered a white moose with extra sauce (which I didn't get)and a sweet tea. This cost me $10. The whole way home, all I could think about was that I feel ripped off. I can get a gourmet sandwich at Ted's Butcher block for the same price.. with Mac & Cheese!

The food was worth the drive from Goose Creek. The Spanish Sunrise was a perfect brunch beverage and the coffee was nutty, rich, and delicious. The service was slow and server's attitude was flippant and off-putting.
I am not a fan of the industrial/warehouse setting but I understand it is a design trend. It feels unfinished and unwelcoming and cold.
