I desperately wanted to like this place but I would be lying if I said this was worth another trip to N. Charleston. It was una cocina mas autentica but slow, overpriced, and sort of meat-gruel based with poor quality vegetables.
My partner, a friend and I went to Tattooed Moose last night for the first time. The corn dogs were probably the best I have ever had and the smoky tomato soup was delicious. We got the Reuben, Cuban and duck club and they were all excellent. I loved the fries but I couldn't tell they had been cooked in duck fat. The aioli was a tasty addition.
So why the two-star review if I loved everything? The service was awful. After we seated ourselves a young woman came by and dropped menus. We asked for water while we looked at the menus and I asked about their beer list, which was on the back of the menu. She came back in about 10 seconds with the water and we asked for a few more minutes. She cheerfully said "Take your time" ... and she never came back. She brought food to tables near us and walked past a handful of times, but never even looked at our table and never stopped. Finally she ensconced herself at the short bar to the left of the door to the kitchen, staring intently at something on the bar and ignoring everything else around her.
The friend who was with me finally walked up to her to ask about ordering beers and food. She handed my friend the beer and said she would be right over for the food order. As my friend turned around the server went back to whatever she was staring at on the bar and never budged. My friend sat down, looked at her in disbelief, and said she was reading the menu.
Finally the bartender, Ryan, walked over and asked if we wanted to order food. From there the service was okay, but the damage was done. You simply don't pointedly ignore customers for 15 to 20 minutes.
I was really excited to try this place as my family and I are always looking for good Mexican food and the reviews for Raul's have been good. We went there on a Saturday night and even though the place was only half full, the place was really disappointing. It took about 45 mins. for our food to arrive and we were ignored the whole time except for our initial drink order/chips. My rellenos were cold, my son's nachos had sour cream (which I asked them to leave off) and my husband's chicken enchiladas were dry. We were given all kinds of apologies and reasons as to why things were so screwed up, but who cares! The place has been getting good reviews and they can't have adequate staff at 7pm on a Saturday night? I think Raul's may have potential once they get their act together, but last night was a bummer. We were hungry and drove 15 mins. to get there in the rain and by the time the food came out I just didn't care anymore.
We went for the first time during Restaurant Week. I wasn't prepared for dining in a cave so the first challenge was finding enough light to actually read a menu. I understand that at a bar you don't need bright lights because people are telling a bartender what they want to drink. In a restaurant, however, people need to read menus. Turn up the lights!
My spinach salad was a train wreck. It was supposed to have several components but all I got was spinach. The vinaigrette had no acid and the salt had just been thrown on and I got it all in one bite since I couldn't see what I was eating. My partner's lamb ravioli was cold on the outside and barely warm in the middle. The triggerfish and braised duck leg entrees were both excellent, but the desserts seemed like afterthoughts.
I'll give them another chance with greatly reduced expectations.
This is a mini total wine (some staff included).
Wine selection is fairly limited, Beer is probably a quarter of what CBX jams into their store, and about equal toi the better piggly wigglys. Lot of losers mixed in to the beer section; in about a year people will be cautioning you to watch dates on the beer. Liquor selection is good, but poorly organized.
I also hate placing the same item throughout the store, very annoying.
Staff is not at all educated in the products (this goes up to management)
Food is great, its the only reason I come back. Buffalo shrimp are awesome, and love the waffle cheese fries.
The service though is ATROCIOUS. One time I just had to leave, my group (3 people) got seated and we never could find anybody to take orders, drinks, anything. Crazy.
The rest of the times, service has just been super slow, Takes probably 15 minutes just to get drinks. Its a shame too because the food is great.
Its subs...They are good, but I don't see what the fuss is about. Quality and menu is on par with Subway, Blimpies, Firehouse and any other of the chains.
Oh and expensive too. Guess they have to cover themselves because they deliver.
We made a reservation for thanksgiving(party of 4). Wanted to seat us with two elderly people outside without heaters. When we asked for seating inside we got skipped by multiple parties of 2&4. No thought or flexibility. Then we get seated at two 4-tops crammed together with someone needing to sit on the crack. Overall food was what we expected, traditional holiday items were good. Oysters were old and dried out. Cheese and salad station was bargain average. Our waiter was attentive and did a good job. The hostess and her three minions gave us the eye the whole time. If we thought that we could have gone somewhere else to get turkey we would have.
After not liking Queen Anne's Revenge since they opened, we went shortly after they changed their menu because we heard it was much improved. Wrong. Service was just plain abysmal. It took nearly 20 minutes to get drinks and the waitress reeked of cigarette smoke when she delivered them so it seems obvious where the delay was.
Of the six of us only one enjoyed her entree. My fish special entree was cold to the point the sauce had formed a skin. My partner's mixed seafood was tasty but salty, and the portion was tiny.
It has potential, but not so much that I want to go back.
I went to Social regularly when they opened a few years ago & always loved it...fast forward to my most recent visits, where the food was still very good but the service was so horrible that I will not be going back. The bartenders were all too involved with chatting each other up and doing shots behind the bar to take our order. When I inquired about different wines, the server attempted to upsell me to the most expensive glasses available. She did the same thing with the food, which was good, though scant, with respect to the prices. Too bad this has become yet another "see & be seen" bar, instead of the classy place it started out as.
Have a drink, enjoy the courtyard, skip the food.
Wine bar, not. I am a little tired of hearing anyone with a wine list (which Eurasia actually has a decent one) call themselves a wine bar. Social is the only one close to wine bar in this area. Simply: a wine bar needs to offer a large variety of wines by the glass, it needs to do set flights and free form flights (ability to offer a half glass). It should have a preservation system unless the wine is marked and flies out.
That all being said, the bottle list here is good and a value to boot.
Food on the other hand was not stellar.
Fried Oysters: supposed to be served with Buere Blanc, couldn't discern, just ok
Caesar Salad: way underdressed, but the croutons were good bit heavy for the salad though
Off the Hook Rockafeller: two fried oysters on a filet (catch of the day) over mashed potatoes and spinach with fontina cream. pretty mundane, potatoes would be what you make for a big family dinner very nuetral, not enough of the fontina cream to taste past a bite or two, fish was fairly flavorless.
Fine Swine: sort of a cured tenderloin with pork fried rice taste, ginger overpowered everything here, very unbalanced.
Cheesecake was frozen in the middle and debonded from the crust, not sure how old it might be,
Overall, I would go back and try an appetizer again, not a meal to give a second chance and more so to sample another bottle.
Place definitely needs work.
What passes for good food here is better comedy than most of what you'll get at Theatre 99. I assume the head chef makes only sporadic visits. Or maybe he's in line with all the overweight tourists outside. Someone needs to tell him he doesn't need to wait out there; he can go on back to the kitchen and take over the reins from that stoned CofC student. Seriously, Denny's makes a better biscuit. Who cares, right? You've got a cash cow. James Beard would be so proud!
We used to go to Hatchells all the time. Then they upped their "tappas" sized portions to meal size so you have to pay more and can't possibly order several to share, and got rid of Harp. We ate at Hatchells BECAUSE of the small portions and equivalently sized prices, oh yeah, and for the Harp, but don't see much reason anymore. I can get an average tasting too-big meal and no Harp just about anywhere in MtP
Home team's ok, it has good bands and the staff is friendly and efficient but:
1. Food: Doesn't come even close to Smokey Oak, in quality, quantity, or price.
2. Parking: Not enough, and your life is in danger in that back parking lot.
3. Prices: Charges admission, and too much for drinks.
4. But worst of all, this place is just not comfortable at all- the metal back chairs hurt before too long, and you can only see the bands from a few seats around the bar. Also, they tend to leave the doors open so the poison from the nicotine addicts gets in.
I'll go there if somebody I want to see is playing, but I usually don't stay very long.
If Five Guys sold beer, this place wouldn't exist. Average burger, below average for the price. The vanilla shake is worth the price of admission and the bar isn't too bad, but thats where it ends.
DON'T GO UNLESS YOU HAVE A BUNCH OF TIME!!
The food is decent, but the service is consistently very slow! Most recently, I walked in the restaurant where one person was already enjoying breakfast. I ordered a breakfast sandwich. 20 minutes later I was still waiting despite only 1 order being placed after mine. I informed the staff that I would need to take my meal to go instead of eating it there because I now needed to leave. The staff acknowledged this and then I noticed that they were now STARTING to fix my order.
If you want a similar restaurant with better food, go about 4 blocks towards meeting street to the Charleston Tea Co.
My coworkers and I ate here today while checking off items from your 101 list. I have only ever been here for breakfast, which I loved.
The patio is now closed in. I, personally don't like it. I loved the patio. It was like a secret hideway from the tourists.
The food was lackluster. I ordered the club and I could have had the same sandwich anywhere. My coworker ordered the shrimp and grits (which were very good) but are only offered at a dinner portion for $16.95 at lunch.
The service was the real issue. Our waiter seemed bothered to be serving us. Rushed us through the meal and everytime he spoke he seemed annoyed we were even there. We all work in the hospitality industry as well and know you have to give the customers a reason to return. Average food and poor service are not a reason.
My last two visits for lunch have been so disappointing. Servers are zombie-like with no interaction or introduction. Just walk up and say "there's the special board. Ready to order?" Bloody mary's had to be sent back because they were basically tomato flavored water. Cheese grits had virtually no hint of cheese. It's been embarrassing because both times I was entertaining guests for their first time at a well known restaurant in charleston. Come on, guys, don't slip now.
The food here is bland and uninspired at best and the service is clumsy and disinterested. They seem to want desperately to be Mt. Pleasant's answer to Lucca, but they can't pull it off...
