On a trip to Charleston with my Mom I googled Asian stores and H & L Supermarket came up with good reviews, so we made it one of our stops. We spent almost a $100 in groceries, including a can of coconut juice which I took a sip of before heading out. Well, the coconut juice tasted rancid and spoiled, even the coconut pulp was yellowish - a bad batch of coconuts or something. In any case I went back in to exchange it for a different can. I very cordially and respectfully ( I never get rude or snide, not my style) explained the situation to the manager lady but she obstinately refused to exchange the coconut juice, insinuating that I was lying and then told me to complain to the company that made it. Even after repeatedly letting her know that I truly wanted to be able to write her store a good review and spread good word of mouth to people I meet (hint,hint) she remained stubborn then rudely walked out on me. For their utterly abhorrent customer service, my Mother and I will never ever patronize this business again.
Worst food experience I have ever had at this restaurant. It all started out with a simple misunderstanding about the menu. It all finished with me vowing to never go back again.
This was the worst restaurant I have ever eaten at. I have never had a worse dining experience in my life. First, the waitress tried to upsell everything to us, and kept pushing us to order more, it was very uncomfortable. Secondly, they failed to tell us that rolls were half price because it was happy hour. We had no idea, and our friend came in randomly, and told us about the deal we were missing out on. We felt pretty cheated, they deliberately hid the deal from us, because they wanted to charge us full price. Two rolls were $24 which is a total rip off. Then, my wife asked to cancel one of her rolls as she had ordered too much, they would not allow her to cancel it, they said it was already made, when it was right after she ordered. It was really crazy. Lastly, when we came to pay, I used a $20 groupon I had purchased plus cash, it was 100% valid and purchased recently, they refused to take it saying it was only good at certain times of day?? It was completely ridiculous! I have never had a worse experience at any restaurant, in my life!
Do not eat here, they are crooks and it is a terrible atmosphere. I cannot stress this enough, don't waste your money here. They were really sneaky about the half off. When we asked our waitress about the half off deal she got very offended and told us that you had to sit in a certain section of the restaurant to get the deal. This was after we had gotten the huge bill. It was absolutely unbelievable.
Stay away from this place at all costs.
I won't go into the whole ordeal...but based on my families experience on a single visit...I have no plans to go back.
Service was weak even though we were seated 6' from counter and there were only a couple other patrons. Waitress was more involved with setting up shop & organizing rather than waiting on customers. Meanwhile, one of the owners(?), a woman, is walking around with a glass of wine in hand and offers no assistance.
My meal came out separately and long after everyone else was served...in a party of 3. Food was not appetizing and bit 'off' from one would expect of familiar dishes.

I got mugged outside of the store. it's in a terrible part of town-- right nextdoor to the community thrift stores where homeless people hang around all day. i was disappointed in the selection at h&l but was impressed with the fact that it was so clean for an asian market. i don't know about you but the cleanliness was not enough to get me back to the store though because what i care about is 1) safety and 2) variety. both of which were lacking for h&l
Best Sushi? Where all you people eat sushi at? the sushi menu is mediocre and overpriced. I don't mind paying for quality, but this is definitely not quality. The snow crab was freezer burn and mushy. The lobster roll with banana was nasty. The fake flowers on the wall are tacky, service is awkward, and the cooked food is passable. The so called sophisticated decor is over done and depressing. Definitely don't recommend!
The night before a group of out-of-town friends were about to depart, I suggested we go to Bambu for some sushi (everyone's favorite foodie splurge). We arrived and requested seating outside. Our waiter was attentive, and took our orders promptly, and we snacked on our edemame and waited...and waited...and waited...and waited...35 minutes later, our waiter returned to let us know our sushi was the next order up, and apologized for the wait. 5-10 minutes, we were told. So we waited...and waited...and waited...30 more minutes passed, my friends were tired, hungry, and cranky at this point, so we requested our food just be packed up to go rather than being plated, because we were already late to meet other friends back at the house. From walking in the door to when the checks/food finally arrived was a total of an hour and 20 minutes. Irritated, I requested to speak with a manager, not to be comped for anything, simply to express my frustration over being a weekly take-out patron for the past 6 months, and then to have had an experience like we did. He came over, and seemed satisfied giving us a half apologetic excuse, and walking off. Never again will I suggest Bambu to anyone getting anything other than takeout.
