The Shelter Kitchen and Bar is definitely not what I was expecting when I walked into it. As another bar on Shem Creek I was expecting fried seafood and all the other standard foods, but I was wrong. Their appetizers (which are half off on happy our or on Monday nights after 9 for food and bev night) are fantastic. The fried pickles and okra was amazing with the in house made chipotle ranch, and so were the Low country Rolls! (basically a spring roll for southerners, collards, pulled pork, and mustard based BBQ sauce). Even just the basket of fries I've had there before was great, it comes with a really fantastic garlic aioli.
The burgers are huge and superb. About 7 different choices for toppings, and you can opt out of a burger for a chicken breast, fried chicken breast, veggie burger (which is great) and even a Portabella mushroom. I've only had my burger cooked incorrectly once, and it was underdone so I sent it back and they actually recooked an entire burger instead of heating up my underdone burger. I was very impressed with the time it took to get food to the table, (as well as drinks) and the reaction time of managers to get out to the table to make sure problems are taken care of in a proper way.
Drinks do take a little while. But if you look at the bar on any given night, they may seem understaffed at some points. If you order your drink when you're 2/3rds done you will never wait on a drink. If you wait until you're done and then have to wait for your server to get back around when this place is packed, I can understand how people would think its bad bar service. But in reality its just its shear volume of people there. Maybe I just do this cause i'm in food and bev myself. But as a server, I enjoy going to The Shelter Kitchen and Bar, happy servers, happy people, happy managers, and a great overall atmosphere. Will be there again, and again.
I am a fourth generation Johns Island native and in no way am I a debutante. The food is spectacular, the staff is well taken care of, and the ingredients are chosen with the utmost care. If you want a negligent underpaid disgruntle jerk ,that hates his job slopping your burgers together, then go do that. Sweeney's takes care top to bottom. The lowcountry lacks service and pride in the food industry. I am relieved to see our little island taking pride in food. $11 a burger with a fabulous side made by hands of people who have a passion for food and can afford to eat there as well; hell of a deal!!

Try Southern General at the end of shopping strip for good burgers, sandwiches and beer. Also great people.
I've eaten at Sweeney's numerous times and that burger is SO good. My server told me they specially fly in 40% butter brioche buns from New York and that the burger is a half pound. It's also served with soup, salad or fries. I couldn't even finish my plate with the amount of food they gave to me. I've found most places charge a LOT more for a burger that good, including a side. It's kinda silly for there to be so many negative comments on a burger this good for $11. I suggest everyone go and try it, it's one of the best I've ever had.
I will try not to be too wordy with my review. Simply put this pizza is some of the best pizza I've ever had in my entire life, and that's saying a lot. Artisanal Neapolitan Pizza has never been a truer statement. Every ingredient was bursting with flavor and those flavors came through in a harmony that made this pizza addictive. I can't wait to go back and have my taste buds blown away again. Not to mention, awesome open atmosphere watching them work the dough and build the pizzas and very friendly staff. If you haven't been here you need to go, it's the best pizza in Charleston hands down. Sorry Mellow Mushroom, Andolinis, and anywhere else in town, but DeSano wins.
TERRIFIC pizzas. Once the dough and toppings are combined it only takes 60-90 seconds to bake followed by table delivery by very pleasant staff. I will be going back again and again for sure. This is the GO-TO place for pizza in the greater metropolitan area!
I've always said if I had a restaurant that featured "specialties" there would be no substitutions allowed. Failure would be swift, assured my family. The menu at Desano's is ALL "specialties" and there are NO substitutions: they have their reasons and they make sense if your interested, and I was. Desano's confidence in this concept and the superb quality of the product will prove my family can occasionally be wrong. When the craving sets in I only hope there's an available table or else I'll have to get it to go and eat it in the parking lot.
Have eaten there a few times, trying something different each time. The food is great. Nice & laid back atmosphere. They have a very good beer selection. Nice to have a local place on Johns Island to grab a good beer and awesome samich. I would highly recommend. Give it a try.

Terrific company downtown to see good theatre. They do a lot with the smaller space and it is very comfortable. Creative sets and lighting and quality productions.
Where are you guys?! I work downtown and every Friday I'd notice your truck at the True Value parking lot on E Bay. You hooked me with the pork belly steam buns early summer. Then the battleship & the bloody mango slushie. Then the oyster sliders after that. I also remember those delicious crispy pork tacos & then that delicious okra side dish. The fries were the best too. Sniff, I miss U guys...and the calamari!

I became a fan of HMNIBBQ from their truck. Now that they have a brick and mortar location, I eat at HMNIBBQWHQ at least once a week. I really enjoy the quirky combinations of toppings and sauces. Grilled pineapple, pimento cheese, bbq bacon, and sriracha mayo is one of my favorites. For sauces they always have sweet red, vinegar, and mustard. Specialty sauces rotate regularly and include Green And Bold, which is made from green pepper jelly; Pineapple Habanero; Pear Bubbly; and Cherry Cola, just to name a few. Recently they have been making ghost pepper sauces. If you like your food to bite back, here's one place where you can match the spice to your tolerance.
The food is good, the service quick and friendly, and the prices fair.
Manny's Mediterranean Cafe on George St has the best Gyros I have had in years - fresh and delicious - a must. Great service and a very comfortable experience - can't wait to go back for more
Brian cares about his students and does a great job of teaching children and adults the throws and defensive art of judo and jujitsu. Classes are traditional but relaxed. This is the best Judo / Jujitsu school in the area!
We found out that Park delivers to Tanner in Hanahan, which now makes this a once a week place for my family and I. Every time I see a Domino's or Papa John's car in the neighborhood, I shake my head. For a few bucks extra, you could get so much better pizza. If I want quantity, I'll suffer at CiCi's. If I want quality, I grab a large BST and add chicken from Park Pizza. Local business that brings the goods.
Happy to say, I have been eating here for over a year now and the quality has always been top notch. I've worked my way thru the menu. Delicious. Try it all. :)

Someone paid a lot of attention to detail. Everything about this place is hand picked and looks wonderful together.
The food is delicious, and is perfectly paired with design of this hidden gem.
The five of us dined upstairs for Father's Day and we couldn't have had a better prepared, more flavorful meal. The service was attentive without being annoying. 3 of us are vegetarians and loved the scrumptious offerings at this 'steak; restaurant. Great cocktails and an extensive wine list rounded out the experience. If I had to make one complaint, it would be that the desserts were massive and we could have shared and would have appreciated that suggestion from our server. In a town full of amazing restaurants, this will be a repeat.
The owners are REALLY nice folks, too. You can tell their staff are happy, and the food is healthy. This is the kind of place you leave feeling like you got a good deal, a good meal and a good feel. I would eat here 3 times a week if I could. We need a Verde at every exit where the fast food restaurants are located. Think about it. Do the math. Get Verde!
