My wife came home one day telling me of this restaurant and how good it was. I couldn't wait to try it. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating and the friendly way we were greeted as we walked in the door. The owner was at the register taking orders and was very nice with a large smile on his face.
The food was okay, at best. I had a sandwich with turkey and bree cheese that was a little too much like one I've had at vickerys right down to the sweet, herbed mayo. I did like the cripsness of the granny smith apple and the fresh flavor of the bread it was on, however. My wife had the chicken salad with a really good pasta salad as the side. I had the potato salad and found the potatoes a little undercooked and way over seasoned, tasting a bit like seafood for some reason. The chicken salad and pasta salad, however, were good enough that I will come back the next time I'm in Summerville, just in hopes that the turkey sandwich was just not to my liking.
I was not overly impressed with their desserts, however, as I was told they were fresh and some of them were bought in, as was apparent by the pieces of paper between the slices.
Overall, I will come back, even if just to be greeted as warmly as we were again. Few places are like that anymore.
Had been looking forward to getting our shine on for some time now. We were impressed by the renovation and the decor. The staff was friendly. Our waiter Rodrigo was excellent. Good selection of beers. Unfortunately, the food stunk- mediocre at best. Not sure if it was just an off night or if shine has already lost its patina :(
Upside: Pork and chicken were both delicious. Mac and cheese is very different with a vinegary tang - but very good. Super cold beer hit the spot.
Downside: Once I got my food and initial beer I was pretty much ignored by the staff. Had to go to the bar and get my own beer and then had to go up to get a take out box since everyone seemed to be focused on talking with their friends, not catering to the customers.
There were approx. 12 people at the restaurant at the time.
Great food, crappy service.
The Cracker Barrel of BBQ joints. Better suited for some lonely exit on I-95, probably near Lumberton, NC.
Saffron used to be a lot better. Past times I have been it hasn't seemed very clean. The menu is okay. I just never feel like the food is that fresh. The day old bread is a nice touch but definitely tastes like old bread.
Decent sushi, but crap service (nobody seemed to know what tables they were serving), and the room we were sat in (first on the right when you walk in, up the stairs) smelled like cat urine. swear to god, i think some of those Shem Creek feral cats got in one night and peed on something. weird. probably wouldnt go back.
Boring food. I ordered the roasted tomato soup, which had a decent flavor but was a bit one-note: creamy. I also ordered the grilled salmon salad; the "poached pears" were just pears out of can.
I first heard about this new bakery while having lunch at Five Loaves. One of the waitresses raved about Lauren's delicious chocolate croissants and said her husband was sneaking to the bakery every morning to buy one. I love chocolate croissants. I was so excited. I have been trying to sample one ever since. First, I went on a Tuesday. No croissants on Tuesdays. Then, I went on a Wednesday. Sold out. I tried another Wednesday. Not ready yet. Finally, today she said that she would only bake them once a week because they were too much work. She failed to mention what day. I give up! All the other items there are good. Selection is limited. Also, good luck finding the place. The sign is hung the wrong direction for a busy street and you cannot see it easily.
If you're into processed, flavored oils, then this is your place. If you're looking for cold pressed, unfiltered traditional oils, then you'll be disappointed. But I guess like most of the stores on King Street, they cater to the tourists. I've been able to find traditional oils (filtered) just as good in local grocery stores (not Whole Foods or Earth Fare). Oils are like wine, its really a personal preference.
I'm from Atlanta, where there are plenty of good, authentic Asian restaurants. After reading the good reviews about this place, I expected much more. The food was decent, but could have been much better. I ordered the house soup, and the wontons were much too doughy and contained very little pork. I also ordered the lettuce wraps with chicken, and they were too salty. The peanut sauce was good though. Overall, I am unimpressed, and will probably not return.
How I hate to be the one negative person, but will try to explain. I love Stephanie's recommendations and after lots of Twitter posts, we went tonight. It was a disaster. I can only guess that our experience was unusual. We had to ask for service several times since the waitress kept neglecting to come back (15 minutes or so to order in the first place). A couple near us was looking for their server at one point, after a while without, to explain they needed their check quickly to catch a movie.
The wait staff brought us AND the tables around us the incorrect orders - 5 times it happened while we were there.
The food was a very enjoyable experience and there were so many things we wanted to try, but after the mistakes and the non-attentiveness, I don't know if we have the energy!
Great flounder with apricot sauce, however, other diner's dish (seabass over succotash)consisted of a square of underseasoned fish dropped on top of a few dozen bland beans in a watered down broth and definitely left something to be desired. Atmosphere was a little too dull for our taste. Would not go back as there are better options in this town.
We used to go to Centerpointe EVERY Sunday to watch the games and hang out. Large group of us, over 15 people in our two groups. No we dont go at all. Owership here is why.
1. SMOKE PIT! Holy cow you cant take a breath in this place without ingesting the second hand smoke from everyone around you. I've been to other bars that allow smoking and this place is the WORST! Who wants to eat food in this kind of enviornment? I mean really!
2. Service - The wait staff is for the most part horrible. They have 1 maybe 2 of them that are good but aside from that the staff acts like they are doing you a favor by being there.
3. Food - The quality of the food is marginal at best. It's on the same level as fast food if I can be 100% honest.
4. Affordability - They really should offer better beer specials on Sundays. Football and beer go hand in hand. Catering to your customers should tell you this. 9 - 10 dollar appetizers... um yeah I dont think so.
This place USED to have a packed house EVERY sunday, go there now and you can almost hear crickets. Sad because the layout is very good and the location is great.
The cupcakes are great, but I think they are much too pricey. Especially, one of the ones they gave me was unbelievable small. I had a two-for-one coupon, but even at 3.50 for two it is a little out there.
I live walking distance from Grindz so when it opened, we had to check it out. My hopes were high there would be a gourmet burger joint with some good drafts where we could hang out, enjoy a good meal, and walk home. The only part of that dream was that I could have walked home. But I didn't - I ran.
I'll preface my review by saying we did go to Grindz within their first month of opening. However, there is only so much to making an excellent burger once you have the menu created. I went with the Dirty Sanchez, not because of the name, but the idea of fusing mexican food and a burger together sounded too good to be true. It was. I ordered the burger medium and it came out essentially seared and bloody raw in the middle. The toppings were all there but none of them were of any particular good quality and they didn't blend together. Although I didn't hate the burger, I was disappointed that it cost me $9 and really wasn't very well made. In addition to being a lackluster burger, it took a good 30 minutes for it to come out. I asked the waitress 2 seperate times for status of my meal and was dismissed both times. A fellow diner ordered the cheesesteak sandwich which was a clumsy disappointment. Tasted like the cooked oscar mayer roast beef in a dry pan and stuffed it into a stale roll. The beer selection stinks and the ambiance rivals that of a DMV lobby.
As Jeff said, this place is not BAD. But it's not great or even good. The food is just average, the service is lackluster, and the atmosphere is a confusing quasi-family friendly-sports bar-strip mall vibe. I can honestly say I would rather spend my $9 for a burger at Ruby Tuesday's. Or go to Hardess and get 2.
Excellent decor, less than acceptable service. Understandably, the bartender was alone. They would do well to have a more experienced tender flying solo. Frankly, I would be very surprised if the management knew their employees (if they are employees) were on a review page giving lip service to customers. Maybe is a little more indicative of their service and attitude than I normally give reviews credit for. Place has great potential.
Evo and Monza are much better...decor is nice, typical new restaurant jitters with slow, inconsistent service. Pizza's are very small (too small for the price), much smaller than Evo or Monza. Mine did taste of ash from the wood fired oven.
Service is EXTREMELY slow. It took 45 minutes for us to get salads. So don't even think about this place during a lunch break. Really a shame because the food itself was excellent.
Paid $8.50 or so for a "bowl" of jambalaya and a 2 inch square of cornbread, no drink, to go ... nothing to write home about and for what is basically working the "leftovers", this was over priced .... I'll pass on a return trip. I can make the same thing at home to take to lunch and beat this hands down.
Re: “Neil Jordan's Steakhouse”
The steaks were good. Thats about all I can say. My wife and I decided to try it for dinner because a friend gave us a restaurant.com coupon for $25 BUCKS OFF. Seemed like a good deal. Well two ribeyes @ $33 bucks each, two straight up drinks and two salads. $120 bucks with tip, even with the $25 off. If it were "upscale" I might feel better, but I think they think a bit too highly of themselves. The steak was good, but I won't be back.
