I actually have to reverse some of the previous comments and say I almost always have great service but my food is almost always messed up.
The wait staff do revolve and some are good and some are bad but it is the bartenders that make it. There are two guys that tend bar that I will look for when I go - Jack is one and then another guy that I have never caught his name. Both are amazing and always remember you. My husband moved out of town for 3 months for work and when he came back the not only remembered him but served up his usual with out a question asked.
The food is another story - I have been to all of the Sesame locations on more than once occasion and when I lived downtown I was in Five Loaves every other week. The owners know what they are doing when it comes to food. The recipes are to die for... this location always seems to mess stuff up in the kitchen though. When I first started going in 2011 it was great and I was in there once a week but they have slowly gone down hill. Now it is to the point where I just take the hike to the Mount Pleasant location to get my burger fix. Of the past 6 time I have been in there I sent my burger back 4 for not being done (I was pregnant so I had to order well done and every time it was still very red and bloody) and once there was a white plastic wrapper in my salad. Yes a wrapper. Not a small piece. Larger than my thumb and bright white - with some kind of muck on it. That was my last visit.
The food is good and the bartenders are friendly but the kitchen staff is terrible. Just go to the other locations.
We went on a cold, rainy, weekday evening a couple of weeks ago. Edmund's Oast had only recently opened and it was packed, which we expected. The space was nice and you'd never know it used to be a decorative hardware store. As soon as we walked in I knew it was the wrong place for me, though. I don't own skinny jeans or a plaid shirt with snaps. I don't wear loafers without socks and a sweater around my neck. These trappings, along with a zeal for obscure pale ales, seemed to be key components of the clientele.
We were seated at a communal table and given menus, which we could barely read between the very low light and the poor choice of font. I hadn't heard of any of the beers so I had to ask for something that wasn't hop-driven since I don't like bitter beers. The server recommended two and I chose one at random. It was pretty good but not especially memorable.
We ordered a small charcuterie platter ($12) and roasted Brussels sprouts ($6) to start. For main courses we tried the seared triggerfish ($26) and miso rubbed pork loin ($26). Both the Brussels sprouts and charcuterie were tasty, but both portions were very small. The triggerfish was slightly overcooked and a minuscule portion, but tasty. The miso rubbed pork loin was cooked nicely but also small and almost devoid of flavor. Miso packs a punch but it was completely missing. The dashi had not even a hint of the smoky ham hock flavor that was promised. I love pea pistou but this tasted like a parsley chimichurri instead. In general I felt the food was okay and had potential but was overpriced by about 25%.
I wouldn't mind going back when it warms up, sitting outside at a table and having a beer, then moving on somewhere else for a meal.
I've been back a few times lately, and my opinion of the place has changed. The new guy cooking the oysters has no idea what he is doing. He overcooks them and only puts out tiny portions, which are scoffed up by the fat ladies waiting like hyenas at a road kill. They steal all the bivalves and hoard them in their little plastic baskets. I waited two times for over 15 minutes for oysters, only to be able to eat about 4-5 dried up little things that resembles old shoe leather. I won't return until they get someone there who knows what they are doing, and someone from the management to reign in those pigs along the side.
This place is very average and overpriced. If you want to pay premium prices for Red Lobster food, this is your place.
The male bartender was awesome and he took over in the case of the negligence and rudeness of the female bartender. The female bartender was just plain nasty. She took an order from a guy standing right next to me when i clearly was before him then when i tried to get her attention she yelled "you have to wait a aminute" and served two more customers before me. I asked for Grenadine which they had in a bottle and she grabs a tray of cherries from the holder and poured the juice right in my drink. The other bartender made me a fresh drink but still :-P Also Karaoke Chris was rude. When It was my turn to sing on the Mic. Im an African american female and there was one african american male in the building and I guess it was Chris friend and said on the mic "hey man I couldn't tell the difference between you two" and started laughing to his underlying racial joke. But with my beautiful self i stole the show and he shut up. But Its a shame that 2014 I had was witness to ignorance of this sort in my own hometown. And I will definitely let the world know!!!!!
After 15 years of eating at Hominy Grill on occasion, I had a craving for shrimp & grits recently and stopped by for lunch all by myself. I was shocked at the disgusting glob of goo that was presented to me...it just LOOKED terrible. Regardless of the appearance, I dived in and, yes, looks weren't deceiving - it was TERRIBLE. After reading year after year about the BEST shrimp & grits in Charleston, I finally tried it & it was awful. The service wasn't much better. What a shame. The two stars are for easy access to parking & the guy bussing tables that finally came over & took this atrocity from my table.
I didn't go there for the beer (so my rating is for the food only)... and had the Pork Schnitzel and Kaesespaetzle twice now. 1st time I was positively surprised by the taste, 2nd time 2 weeks ago not so much - the Schnitzel was not cooked/fairly raw and the batter didn't even stick to the meat; the Kaesespaetzle had more cheese than Spaetzle and was more like a soup. I know how it's done right, I'm a German. At the community tables it's disruptive if someone wants to use their cards...you got to move out of the way and it seems hard to keep the tables bussed..so you kind of put the previous guest's dishes away to the side yourself and hope a waiter/waitress doesn't think it's yours.
The staff is friendly and accomodating; the atmosphere fairly loud inside and it's a loooong wait for a table. I like the interior and the outside. Hopefully this place gets the kinks worked out - has lots of potential to be the IT-spot.
Was really looking forward to this place for so long. I've been for lunch and an early afternoon beer, and it is tolerable then. The lunch food I thought was great and pretty affordable. Service at night, though, is pretty terrible (especially if you're a dude). Good luck getting a drink at the bar...and paying a little too much for it. I would just ignore the beer card thing if its not for you...
Had great beers but spent $40 bucks on 4 beers...and I poured my own beers... don't volunteer to buy a round at this place...
Our slider appetizers were very good. Our entrees were slightly overpriced and hugely underseasoned. The wait service was annoyingly mediocre. We're not food snobs, but geez, this place has ZERO personality.
Hard to rate, here's why: First time we stopped in on a quiet day, the service was a little slow but food was fine, so we decided to revisit on a Friday night. The place was full, but we were seated quickly. We waited for about 5-7 minutes, then the waitress came over to take our drink order (clue #1). When she returned with just 2 waters she said "Ill be honest, I forgot what drinks you ordered" (clue #2). When she came back with our drinks, she took our order--and repeated it as we ordered it. As i watched the tables that she was assigned to it was clear she was totally 'in the weeds' but the host kept seating her section (4 additional tables while we waited for our food to arrive- clue #3). Our food arrived, but half of my date's order was wrong. She said she would go fix it and be right back. We began to eat, but sadly discovered both of our orders were cold. Cooks don't put up cold food to go to a table, it gets cold when wait staff let it sit in the window too long. The food was good, but would have been super had it been served hot. The 'wrong' part of my date's food never got fixed. Nichole (waitress) kept coming by & filling water/tea & saying, "Oh yeah, let me get the other part of your order" but it just never happened. When she came to drop off our check, she said "oh gosh, i never brought the other part of your meal! Do you want it to go?" When we said No, she went on to say "you can take it home & eat it". Um, again, No thanks, we wanted to eat it here, not home. She didnt even remove the unreceived food item off of the check. *** Owners please take note: good food can only keep a place afloat so long, when the service is bad, people won't return! It would be a shame to go out of business because of your servers' poor service.
When I think Neapolitan pizza, a thin crispy crust comes to mind but this is not what I got here. The service was good and the pizzas came quick, but our pizza crust was barely cooked--almost soggy. Not impressed at all! Will not being going back.
The food here is always wonderful, however, I won't go back until they address the atmosphere problems. The acoustics in the space make it impossible to have a conversation, which is what you would want to have. I have heard this from many others who have been and also mentioned despite the wonderful food the atmosphere kills the experience.
The bier card was a golden opportunity to set BSB apart from the pool of comparable establishments. If anything, that should have been focused on for success only. Otherwise when you come down to saying that outside of the bier card, you are just like everywhere else, that really hurts in promoting your brand. If you are just like everywhere else, why don't I just go everywhere else?
I will cut some slack on the servers and their lack of knowledge since that takes time for most new places to overcome. I may try BSB again in a couple of months to see if they have improved. But if they are either no different or if what makes them different is not better, then I don't expect this to be a true and successful biergarten for the many in Charleston who are well-versed in beer.
Maybe not a relevant review...I went within a year of opening. Limited menu & pricey...not a bad thing, but small portions. Drink orders move like a herd of turtles. Service was questionable...Server would walk past table after initial drink order without further inquiry, refill on water or refresh bread basket. It's a small place so when a server ignores you it makes for an uncomfortable situation. Neither myself nor my wife have been compelled to return...and we live 2 blocks away.
It's frustrating because if you want to order a beer from the taps throughout the restaurant you have to use a prepaid card which charges you by the oz even if only foam comes out. Also hard to view the selection of taps when the restaurant is busy also feels like you're intruding on other customers dinner if you want to go get a specific beer. Then if you want to order from the bar or waitress you only have 13 beer options total. I see what they were trying to do but didn't quite enjoy the experience.
I enjoyed Bay Street Biergarten's beer selection but have to agree with the others that the prepaid card is a scam. Watch out for the free pour, the get you by charging you for half of a glass of head each time a keg is changed. I paid 60$ for a card and was denied my Bombay Sapphire gin martini at the bar, which is unacceptable. And also, what's the deal with the community tables and the fact that one person has to pick up the whole tab? That's not how a community table operates. I like how the poster 'easydoesit' gives the restaurant 5 stars in order to bash a fellow reviewer. That smells of an inside job. Hilarious! In other news, the beef jerky was great!
Yes, do beware of the oil change special. Additional fees are added. The place seems sorta like a used car lot with the only thing missing is the polyester suit. You can get the same service for less up the street at Precision, or Firestone, or HIlls.
I went with a large group. I had the intention of getting myself an appetizer since the prices are on the steep end for me. I get there and my friends tell me that due to the size of the party, we are getting one check that has to be split evenly. If I'm getting charged $20-25 no matter what, I decided to get $20-25 worth of food. That ended up being the Stir-Fried Chili Shrimp and one or two beers. The shrimp was amazing. However, there's no indication on the menu that it's very spicy. It was what I call a "hurts so good" experience - I was chugging my water my lips were in so much pain but otherwise it was amazing. It was very good, but for the small menu and the high prices I probably won't be back anytime soon.
My fiancé and I were very excited about trying this restaurant, as we were seriously considering using it as a potential rehearsal dinner venue. Our waiter was phenomenal: very friendly, knowledgeable, and made several great suggestions for wine. The appetizers were very good. My entrée, the salmon, was delicious. However, my fiancé's trout came out of the kitchen laden with salt. Neither of us ever likes sending back/complaining about food, but my fiancé has a very hearty appetite, so when he could only take three bites of his food, I knew it was pretty bad. I tasted it, and it tasted like salt water; you couldn't taste anything else in the dish. We told our waiter about this problem, and he assured us that the trout would be taken off of our bill, since it was inedible. However, the manager then quickly came out to our table and, astonishingly, told us that it was supposed to taste that way, and that we would have to pay for it. We were both shocked by how patronizing the manager was, and if he would have tasted the entree, he would have quickly realized the fish was dead from over-salting (we love salt by the way!! Just not when it tastes as if the salt shaker exploded on our food). The waitor obviously was embarassed, and apologized several times for the kitchen's mistake. Anyway, after that experience, we definitively decided not to have our rehearsal dinner there. It's too bad, because the rooftop is lovely. All it would've taken for me to give this place 4 stars and walk out of the restaurant happy was a comped trout, or at least a less salty one to replace it, even a simple apology from the manager. Instead, he acted as if we had unrefined palates (although that could've been true at that moment, since the salt prohibited us from tasting any other flavor the rest of the meal).
