I have been to Halls twice. Very underwhelming. How they remain in business dumbfounds me. The food was adequate, at best. The "sides" are all a la carte. The portion was small, and cold. When I ordered a beer vs. wine (have you seen the prices for their wines?!!) it was like I had insulted their mother. I agree that if you live locally, go out and buy a good grade of steak and cook your own! I will not return to Halls, and do not recommend it to visitors or others. I don't recommend Aarons, either, but that is another story. Tourist trap.
Was very dissapointed in our last visit to Hall's. Went on a Friday night with guests in town and had reservations through OpenTable. Show up at 7:30, and they have no tables available, even though they had called earlier that day to confirm out reservations. They seat us at the bar to wait on an available table. Its so loud and drunk people pushing into us, our quests are quite annoyed and ask if we should leave. The old hostess who works there, who is a Hall and part of the ownership, comes up to us every 5 minutes to apologize to us. Not to mention she has horribly bad breath as she has to get right in my face to talk as its so loud in there. We are seated about 20 minutes later. We end up spending easy $100 each on 4 people. Our two guests from Chicago were very unimpressed with the food and our experience there, I thought the food was just ok that night, but not nearly for what you pay when you leave. It wasn't my first time, but Hall's has worn thin on me from the first couple times we went there during the first year. Talking to friends it seems to be wearing thin on just about everyone. Lucky for us, plenty of exciting new restaurants to take Hall's place.
Poe's has been one of my favorite go-to places for a long time and I LOVE the mahi tacos!! BUT to see this Tomas lady's seriously annoying and ridiculous rant on the side of my computer whenever I'm perusing the Charleston City Paper is plain annoying . Ever heard of a babysitter, Tomas? Yeah? Well, CALL ONE and stop complaining about the fact that your unruly children obviously are NOT OLD ENOUGH to sit still and be presentable in a really great establishment. Complete idiot.
Take your screaming child away from other paying customers until he calms down. Problem solved.
As much as I appreciate the previous 2 comments made in response to my post, I disagree with your overall statement. We were there at 11 am for a total of 30 min. We go there because it's loud, they have a kid's menu, they have high chairs, the wait staff has always been really nice, the food has been great, and the bartenders are knowledgeable. As such, I'd like to retract the statement about the "horrible, overpriced bloody mary's". I still do not appreciate the general manager being a complete jerk about the situation including when I went back to apologize for the inconvenience and complain about how we were treated. His statement that "he didn't want to tell me how to raise my kids" was uncalled for, unnecessary, and extremely hurtful. I would suggest that if they do not want parents to bring their kids there, there are easier ways to accomplish this such as removing the kids menu items and high chairs. I can assure you I will not go back with or without my kids. Since I no longer care nor do I have any more time to devote, I will no longer post any more comments in regards to this.
"I have never been treated so poorly in my life."
You must not have a very hard life, Tomas. No one wants to hear your crotchfruit cry, especially in a TAVERN. If you can afford to go out to eat, you can afford a babysitter. Next time I go there I will personally ask for Travis and tell him to keep up the good work.
Why anyone would bring a 1 year old, coupled with a 2 1/2 year old, to a restaurant that does not have arches or a Chucky Cheese mouse on it always amazes me. This is a bar that serves food. Don't upset the adults in the place with little kids. When you do the nasty and have kids, plan on being out of touch with decent restaurants until your kids grow up. Frequent places that have slides and playground equipment. Or silly games. Match the social maturity of your offspring with the intended menus and other patrons who are there. No food would be good with a little kid crying next to you.
I have never been treated so poorly in my life. My 2 year old hit his head and screamed in pain. When we were able to calm him down a few minutes later we placed our order. Literally, a minute later, the general manager, Travis, came over and asked "IS THERE GOING TO BE A PROBLEM HERE? YOU'RE KID'S YELLING IS DISTURBING!" Nevermind that he almost busted his head open and we were clearly emabarrased that we quickly requested boxes. On our way out, he took it upon himself to to tell us "BYE BYE!" As if he was the conquering hero that saved his patrons from the terrible 2 1/2 and 1 year old children. After we went home and put our kids to sleep for their nap, I went back to calmly let him know I have never been treated so poorly and wouldn't be coming back even though I have been there regularly for a decade. He actually told me he doesn't want to tell me how to raise my kids, but he had to look after his other customers comfort. Clearly he doesn't have kids, or he would have known that we were more worried about our son's well being than disturbing a few tourists sucking down horrible, overpriced Bloody Mary's at the bar. Way to go Travis, you clearly care about your regular customers.
Manny's Mediterranean Cafe on George St has the best Gyros I have had in years - fresh and delicious - a must. Great service and a very comfortable experience - can't wait to go back for more
We have been to the pub in Rivertowne several time and have had a great experience each time. I look forward to our next visit. Steve
A rip off place. Owner and staff. Beware. Smokie is a big time rip off. Be careful. If you walk into that place. Don't be alone. That guy is a rip off. He's proud of being a thief..What a cock sucker. Taking advantage of a bar. He should be shut down. Police should shut him down for being so crooked.
OK drinks. Horrible service. The bartender (possibly owner) was disrespectful and confrontational. Better to take your business a few doors down to any of the other cocktail bars on King St.
"It's a steak house, idiots. You know what you'll pay, you know what you'll get. Not one person (that I've read) said the food was bad.
What an idiotically small town Charleston is.
Go to your rooms, children."
No, nobody said the food was "bad" but most everyone says the food is way overpriced and the atmosphere is lousy. Look at the top comments for this joint, EVERY one is negative. Look at the top comment, are 74 out of 100 people "fake" or "idiots" because they have a correct opinion of the place. Seems you need to take your own advice about that room, addy.
So let me get this straight, it's the positive reviews that are the fake ones? Heh. Despite the reviews of being RUFIED, the owner engaged in "either sex or drugs" in the bathroom, the audaciousness of a restaurant being noisy, the incredibly, unutterably rude friendliness of the host, the outrageous ("but mid-priced for steak houses nationwide") prices, and the "OK food." Heh. Ha! Seems to me that there is a serious movement afoot to smear this place.
My favorite: "a girl who works in our office who's roommates with a hostess at Halls says..." Really? REALLY? You, sir or ma'am, have posted in this thread 4x smearing Halls, so your twice removed hearsay really won me over.
It's a steak house, idiots. You know what you'll pay, you know what you'll get. Not one person (that I've read) said the food was bad.
What an idiotically small town Charleston is.
Go to your rooms, children.
"The service was attentive without being annoying. 3 of us are vegetarians and loved the scrumptious offerings at this 'steak; restaurant. Great cocktails and an extensive wine list rounded out the experience."
"Our personal experience with Hall's is one of complete enjoyment of the food, the staff, and the over-all experience. Come join us for one of our City's best dinner establishments."
"All of my friends agree. This is the GO TO place in Charleston for steak."
This is not how real people talk. I'm inclined to agree with JDChas.
Met someone online and he took me here on our "1st Date". GREAT JOB!! Great ambiance for a girl who loves Jazz and is all about setting the perfect atmosphere. Beautiful upscale restaurant with Live Jazz playing in the upstairs of the two story restaurant. Very classy just like me. Perfect for the Classy, Sassy Girl from California!!
Thats funny, a girl who works in our office who's roommates with a hostess at Halls says that employees are encouraged to post glowing reviews of the restaurant on a list of websites given out by the Hall family. They have gone over this during employee meetings. The previous poster got it right about these random 5 star reviews.
The five of us dined upstairs for Father's Day and we couldn't have had a better prepared, more flavorful meal. The service was attentive without being annoying. 3 of us are vegetarians and loved the scrumptious offerings at this 'steak; restaurant. Great cocktails and an extensive wine list rounded out the experience. If I had to make one complaint, it would be that the desserts were massive and we could have shared and would have appreciated that suggestion from our server. In a town full of amazing restaurants, this will be a repeat.
I have been here twice in 2 years. Had to give it a second chance. While the atmosphere is cozy, the food is nothing to talk about or eat! The worst sheppards pie I've ever had. It had chili base with chunks of potatoes on top. Awful! You need a new chef!
Jesus Christ. Eat your steak at home. Do not pay someone to grill it for you. Unless you are in Chicago or NYC...don't go to a steakhouse.
