My boyfriend and I ate dinner here a few weeks ago on a romantic getaway to Charleston. We chose Stars because the menu sounded good, the weather was nice, and they have a rooftop bar. We made a reservation, were seated promptly by a friendly hostess, and were excited to try the many delicious-sounding menu options.
Our high expectations were not met, unfortunately. It was extremely loud inside the restaurant, to the point of not being able to hear each other screaming across our small two-person table. Additionally, the bruschetta and flounder tasted like the Dead Sea. I didn't have high blood pressure when I went here, but I could very well have left with it, considering the ridiculous amount of salt in these dishes. Upon "finishing" our meal, and sending nearly the entire plates of food back to the kitchen, no one bothered to ask us if there was anything wrong with the food.
The lesson I have learned from this experience is as follows: if you want a fun drink and a cool rooftop atmosphere, this is the place to go, but if you want a delicious and romantic meal, look elsewhere to one of the many fabulous Charleston restaurants.
I will have to agree with the new years review we thought we would give the place a try thinking that since it was new years it would be extra special. What an absolute waste of money. Our new years was ruined due to the bland over expensive dinner that we had at McCradys. It is sad when you are sitting at a 7 course dinner at $150 a person and thinking maybe you should have just paid $100 for an open bar and h'ordeuvres elsewhere with more of an atmosphere and live entertainment.
I was at McCrady's last night, New Years Eve 2013, for dinner with my date. The food was absolutely awful (it was a 7 course chef's tasting menu). Each plate was priced at $150 for a total of $300 for both of us, or so we thought. Our waiter asked us if we wanted to have wine that complimented each course, which we did. At the fourth course, we were so disappointed in the quality of the food that we elected to leave without having the last two courses. The food was that bad. I was stunned at the poor quality, and the experienced ruined our New Years Eve celebration. So when our bill came, we were charged almost $600 dollars for the disaster that was McCrady's restaurant. That's right, $600 dollars for two people. I am a resident of this area, and I can say that the meal we had at McCrady's restaurant was the worst I have ever had. I would not even to be able to rate this experience as a one star.
Sadly, I can only review the customer service and the decor, not the food. I tried to eat at Heart on a recent Saturday and when I walked in it was busy, but not hectic and we were the only people waiting (just 2 of us, not a big party). No sign indicates whether to seat yourself, or wait to be seated. There was a young man behind the counter (within direct eyesight, and less than 6" away) but we were ignored by him for 2 minutes until he finally said in an off-handed, almost annoyed manner that he would help us "in a minute." TEN, minutes later he was still ignoring us despite still being behind the counter and still attending to other customers at the counter off and on. This young man pointedly avoided eye contact, and when one of us approached the counter again to pick up a menu to hopefully, and subtly, "remind" him that we were still waiting, he continued to refuse to make eye contact and turned his back without saying a word.
After 10 minutes of being ignored, we decided to leave and take our business elsewhere on JI and where we treated like we existed AND had a great lunch at another restaurant.
As for the decor, it's open and bright, if not a bit bare. The restaurant smells really good when you walk in, but as noted above, sadly I cannot attest to the food. The noise, however, is really loud, probably because there is nothing to absorb it in the concrete and cinderblock construction. Even without being seated I could barely hear anyone, even when 2 feet away from me.
I hope that I caught the Heart Woodfire Kitchen on a very, very bad day, because I like supporting local JI restaurants. However, I'm not sure that I would use my time giving this place a second chance when I know that I can go elsewhere and actually be acknowledged within 10 minutes of walking in. Sadly disappointed.
I don't know which was worse, the service or the food. We've eaten here many times before and had great food and excellent service. Apparently they are under new management. We got there and they were out of half of all menu items saying, "They were switching to a new menu."
Then the food we got tasted like leftovers. Even the bread was stale. The server abandoned us for about 30 minutes. We finally asked the bartender to get us a check. I tried to ask one of the other servers but realized she was in the process of telling someone to "F* off." Her words, not mine. We finally got our bill & the waitress slung it on the table with attitude.
The time spent driving out there we could've had a great meal at a downtown restaurant.
We REALLY wanted to like this restaurant. We went in pumped up about them and ready to try out their lunch buffet. The buffet is the only option at lunch, and when we arrived, we found that there was very little selection. The meat choices - fried or baked chicken - (hope you like chicken!), with green beans, a "hoppin' Jane," and some sort of unidentified, dried up fruit dessert that was covered by paper towels to keep away the flies. The baked chicken was unappealing - it looked more like boiled chicken, with a grayish color - and the fried chicken was GONE. I waited over half an hour for the fried chicken to be replenished, and apparently, everyone else did, too. By the time it arrived on the buffet, I was too disgusted with the rest of my meal to even give it a try. My companion did, and said that it was the one edible thing on the buffet. The hoppin' Jane - a rice and lima bean mix - was a cold glob on my plate, but it was the only thing I managed to eat. The green beans had no flavor at all. I never salt my food, but I did that day. We left unsatisfied and still hungry. I have never been so reluctant to pay for a meal in my life. We had been hoping that this would become a regular on our restaurant rotation because it is close to home, but I wouldn't return to eat there if you paid me. SO disappointed. I don't want to give even one star.
I really, really wanted this place to be good. We have very few decent restaurants on 17 past Main Road. I even gave them two chances. Unfortunately, the first waiter was a disaster. I ordered eggs benedict and he brought an egg and crabcake dish. I'm still not sure he knew the difference. The grits were like eating a ladel of salt. The egg was runny after ordering it well done. So, I figured one bad meal, no big deal. The second time I went back, the food was right, but it wasn't good. And really I could have put up with all of that, except that they were rude on top of everything. The place is so small, they actually told this man who had just finished eating and paying, he had to leave because they needed the table. They didn't ask him nicely like, gee would you mind terribly giving up your table, they were like, you know we really need that table so the owner told me to tell you to leave. The look on his face? Well he was just plain embarrassed and beet red. I was embarrassed for him. I know he'll never be back. As for me, only if I was starving and this was the last place open. Ughh. In Charleston no less, where manners are supposed to be everything.
The kitchen needs to find its way to a source for herbs and spices. Recent lunch for two. Fried green tomatoes with cornmeal breading with no discernible seasoning and did not adhere to the fruit. Large SHREDDED crab cake with little or no seasoning. Butternut squash soup that was inedible. Unseasoned cornmeal breaded catfish that was applied to very thin fillets that ended up dry and tough at each end and mushy in the middle.
Sorry nope! Flat taste at inflated prices. I really wanted to like this but it's was un-original and bland. While I appreciate the whole "local first" movement it should be something that is done bc it's the right thing to do and not used as your calling card... frankly the hype should be about the flavor and not the farm. Sorry but this is not going to be all I had hoped. Good service though.
Ick. Bring back El Bohio please!
We went to the location expecting to be blown away with Cuban food and instead got lack luster food from a new restaurant trying to be cool and join the "locally grown" movement. While I appreciate the focus on "locally sustained meats and produce" the food was forgettable and flavorless.
2 glasses of wine and 3 small plates for "sharing" cost $50 + tip.
In a city with hundreds of options for food, I will not be back.
I went to Cypress for the first time last night for Restaurant Week. It cost $90 with tip for two restaurant week dinners and a martini - the martini (Lavender) was the only thing worth paying for.
Started with Lobster Bisque - it was okay. I had the Koren Beef BBQ for dinner and the first four or five bites tasted like nothing but char and ash from the grill. The rice and veggies were lackluster and overall I decided I'd rather save the calories for dessert. Bad idea. The Pecan Pie was horrible. One of the worst desserts I've ever had during restaurant week. It was small and round and I had to hold on to it with my hand in order to cut the crust. The middle was dry and it was just...definitely not good.
As someone who looks forward to restaurant week each September/January and really enjoys trying new places I can't normally afford, I was very dissappointed to have wasted my money here. If I ever go again, it will be to get a Lavender Martini from the bar upstairs - I'll eat dinner somewhere else.

I use to work for them and I am so happy I don't anymore' so Ima Oldmann & Jaxx can suck it. Dogs allowed? Then POST IT. How they are allowed? POST IT!
I would give it 0 stars if i could. Never in my life have I had cold, burned, soggy french toast. The waitress was horrible. I would sooner eat at a McDonalds before returning.
We went to this place last night. We had reservations for 7:30 - party of 3. I recieved not 1, not 2 but 3 phone calls asking for confirmation for the res.. Desperate was my 1st thought... but we decided to go anyway (it was a toss up between this place or Sette - my old standby). This was our first time dining here. The place was empty and we were seated immediatly. The waitress was very nice.. She explained the menu and answered the questions we had. We all agreed that the food was pricey but we really didn't mind spending money on a great meal however this was not the case. We each ordered an appetizer and entree. The food was just ok...the pasta with shrimp was very bland and the ingredients were nothing special. I honestly felt like I could have done a better job with this dish. The 17 north salad sounded good but when I tasted it, the artichokes were straight out of a can from Walmart. No flavor, very rubbery and the dressing was almost non existent. My husband had the fried chicken. I will simply say he was sick after eating it. However, his side of collard greens were good. The 3rd person in our party had the eggplant parm and that too was blah.. Too much red sauce and cheese - where's the eggplant?!?! The overpowering flavor of oregano ruined it for me. This place has Oak steakhouse prices for less then average food.
On a positive note - the waitstaff was nice and informative. (with the exception of the weird guy who brought out the food. Never said hello and looked at us like we each had 3 heads.
I dont not consider myself a food connoisseur by any means. however, I can appreciate good quality food and I dont mind paying for it. It's fair to say that i will never recommend 17 North or go back. Oh and if you do head to this place, check out the self absorbed pic the owber Brett has hanging up of himself over the fireplace.. I mean come on, really?!?!?!?

I don't know what your reviewers are paid to offer commentary but this restaurant was so poorly received it isn't even open anymore. The two preceding versions of Red Sky were highly successful. Watch for it to rise from the ashes again under new ownership and kitchen leadership
Will not go back here. Way too crowded and the acoustics are terrible. Waited for an hour for a table (yes, we had reservations) and the service was bad. Order came out wrong and then when they fixed it, the food came out cold. Overall, not a good experience.
great service .. mediocre food .. over hyped .. no where close to what Brett has done before .. sensing this is a side investment with no real McKee hands-on involvement ..
Closed. wasnt worth it anyway
