Re: “Hominy Grill

I will preface this review by saying we went on Father's Day, so I knew it would be 'blown up' with people. I arrived 30 minutes ahead of my group to put our name on the list b/c we had 7 people in our party & I figured they would need to combine 2 tables or something, so I was trying to think ahead. The hostess looked put out when i said there were 7 people and said things like, "well, we dont really have tables for 7, can you split tables?" and "if everyone isnt here when we call you, we have to skip you." I appreciated the honesty, but not the attitude it came with. Well, when they called us, 5 of the 7 folks were present (the other 2 were trying to find a parking spot). We explained this and when the hostess walked away, she said "Well, I cant hold a 7 top for people who arent here" to a waitress. 5 of the 7 of us WERE right there, and we were going to sit and order coffees/mimosas, etc. They sat us at a 5 top and told us the other 2 would have to sit 'over there' -- totally across the room. SO, she wasnt holding a 7 top, then, right?! We actually asked the waitress if there was any way to squeeze 2 extra chairs at our current table & she was nice enough to suggest we add the adjacent 2 top she had (couple there were paying bill). Once we got settled and ordered, the food came out pretty quickly and was decent enough for breakfast fare, although nothing 'spectacular'. The other posters are right, this place really seems to cater to tourists and shoots for quantity over quality experience. I hadnt been here in a while and probably would try other places before returning again.

Re: “The Sloppy Cow

Finally got out here Saturday night......Damn!! Actually the best burgers I've had in Charleston and you've got to try the Sloppy Fries. Only glitch we had was wife insists her beef is destroyed and the color of shoe leather. When I told the server that she didn't like the Medium doneness, he apologized (unnecessary), took it back to the kitchen, returned with it shortly, apologized again and offered to replace it if it still wasn't right. It was perfect, the service, especially for a burger joint, was friendly and over-the-top the food was exceptional and, by comparison, if some of the prices charged for Downtown burgers are justified, then this place is the best bargain around.

Re: “Crust

I've been twice and think it's a nice little neighborhood place. The crust on our pizzas was crackly and black in a few places, which I liked. The Del Re was salty goodness, and my toddler loved his cheese and fried egg pizza. I wasn't as excited about their take on sausage and mushroom, but it still was perfectly fine. I wouldn't visit Crust for a special occasion, necessarily, but I'm glad to have another solid option for a weekday lunch or dinner.

Re: “Baroni's New York Pizza

Interesting - I like the because it is greasy, just like the ones I grew up on back in NY.
Also- what happened to all of the other comments that used to be here - why were they deleted?

Re: “La Malquerida

My favorite taco truck, hands down. Cheap and extremely filling, as well as plenty of choices.

Re: “Norm's Pizza, Subs & Grill

I don't enjoy Norms at all. Mediocre burgers and pizza that tastes and smells rotten. But it's near the college, which is why I think it's popular.

Re: “Baroni's New York Pizza

Great pizza. I very much enjoy this pizza. Not greasy at all and a good selection of toppings. Crust tastes just like mom used to make.

Re: “P.I.E. Bake Shoppe

Visited Paige's Incredible Edibles twice, will be back for many more lunches. You get a really tasty sandwich with a small side for less than $7. I've had the cherry chicken salad and the turkey mango sandwiches. Foccacia Pizza is next on the list.

Re: “The Boathouse at Breach Inlet

Went for the last time on Mother's Day weekend. The food was poor along with the service. We used to love the place...now we will leave it for the tourists.

Re: “Charleston Bakery

Its Okay for SC, but by no means an "Authentic Jewish-Style deli" unless that style modifier means "Oh they have some Jewish deli items done passably. Okay, nothing special, nothing worth a drive for, but if you live in the area it works

Re: “Fat Hen

Dinner last night at the Fat Hen was a pleasure. My good friend, her mother, and I enjoyed big, succulent mussels with bacon and artichokes; using our bread to soak up the "butter soup" left over was not only delicious but fun. The Coq Au Vin was rich but not overwhelming and the tender pieces of butternut squash tossed with the hericovert was delightful. The Shrimp and Crab was a great surprise; this dish had just enough spice, just enough butter, and just enough plump pink shrimp. We didn't make it to dessert but the Blackberry Cobbler was enticing, I'm sure we would have had it but we had movie tickets.

Our server was attentive, timely, and warm. He provided a great suggestion for wine pairing, anticipated our needs, and although busy, was relaxed and friendly. This staff is really a team and you can see that the servers, server assistants, and host staff make every effort for the dining experience to be seamless.

Oh yeah, there is bacon: cubed bacon, bacon lardons, and crispy bacon. The celebration of bacon is winding down, but The Fat Hen uses the bacon as a flavor enhancer (a little salt here, a little smoke there, a little meaty bit here, a little fatty bit there), the bacon doesn't overwhelm the accompanying flavors.

I live in Goose Creek and I will gladly drive to John's Island to enjoy this gem of a restaurant again.

When you are on your own its food first, decor second. Kudos to a guy that is truly a hands on owner, a bada$$ sushi chef and a humble human being.Keep on doing what you do Sean.

Re: “Craftsmen Kitchen and Tap House

This is why I don't review on here any more. You give a thoughtful honest opinion and some PBR drinking idiot slams you for too much information. They would rather see reviews like "This place rocks, can't beat dollar PBR's"

I read brewengineers review and am looking forward to trying this establishment. 3 stars by the way is a recommended place and a very good rating. What negativity was in the review, it seemed honest and well thought out. The majority of the people on this site throw 5 stars around so that it has become utterly meaningless. 5 stars is the place if you are visiting for only one day, you have to get there.

1 star- acceptable quality
2 star- good quality
3 star- very good quality
4 star- superior quality
5 star- exceptional in every way- food drink decor service

there are 232 four star and above restaurants in city paper's guide. Honestly, there are probably less than 10. In Charleston though, we have 5 star bagel shops??

Re: “Craftsmen Kitchen and Tap House

We here at Craftsmen appreciate all reviews and comments, both positive and negative. We are brand new and know that we have plenty of room to grow into our identity. I do feel that we are offering a very good product that is unique to our dining community by focusing on offering a good selection of beers and casual, well executed food that is intended to elevate the drinking experience. As far as pricing is concerned, we feel that we have placed ourselves on the moderate end of the spectrum, but rare beers and specialty beers are always going to cost more. The beer community is a friendly one, full of camaraderie and a desire for everyone to succeed in the quest to make people happy. That is something we believe in at Craftsmen, too. So thanks to everyone who has been in or will come in the future, and know that we are listening and working hard to become a great addition to an already fabulous dining scene.
