Outstanding ribs and sauce selection, generous servings, great service. They will tell you this is the original location, and it is easy to see why there are so many locations.
Im really surprised at the reviews. Ive always found the food to be great! All one has to do is look at the parking lot and see the neighborhood wants Smoky Oak
As a native of NC, I found Smoky Oak very enjoyable. As a fan of BBQ and having live near Lexington, the capital of BBQ, I have found a place that its BBQ is just like what I am familiar with! The service was great and I will return eagerly! RevT
Excellent service and true southern 'cue! i travel all over the South and always enjoy coming to jim 'n nicks for their pulled pork sandwich & cheese biscuits - yummmmm! oh - and the homemade cream pie. really friendly staff!
I hate traveling on Rivers Ave as we ride scooters, from West Ashley. This place is an Oasis on that tarmac of heated road, and a place to relax from the congestive highway. We loved the place and the food.Quick service ,friendly atmosphere ,and southern cooking which would put this place as a must go to when visiting near this area.
Excellent barbeque. It's the best I've had in Charleston, and I'm a bbq snob. It is definitely short on atmosphere, but the food is excellent. It's a good sign when you see smoke coming out of the back of the building (unlike Momma Brown's, which probably cooks their "bbq" in an oven). No buffet here, and the food is all the much better for it.
The Barbeque Joint is THE place for lunch in North Charleston. Pulled pork, Brisket, Mac 'N Cheese, and Slaw. Awesome sauces too - don't forget the sauces!
I dig both joints quite a lot. I go for the food sometimes and for the music other times and I always seem to come out happy. My kids enjoy it, my girlfriend enjoys it and they have a really good variety of interesting and very listenable music. It is never too loud. The sound system at both places is really well managed.
I've been to both locations several times already. I appreciate the care that they put into the music side of it and I think the BBQ is the best I've had since Mr. B's closed!
My only experience has been with the W.A. locale. Always a great meal, quick service, and friendly people. They always have live music, very eclectic, and the bar staff, always very generous. AAA+
I have eaten at several of the BBQ/Rib places in Charleston and I think this place is the best. The mac and cheese is awesome, their mustard BBQ sauce is outstanding.
Diffently a most for all BBQ fans.
Holy crap this place is good. I stopped here with some friends after a round of frisbee golf at Trophy Lakes. They were hungry, I had just eaten. I somehow got convinced to get the buffet and wound up eating 3 rounds of friend chicken, pork n beans, bbq, corn, you name it. And then pudding. I've never felt so good and so sick at the same time. Can't wait to go back.
Call me crazy, but I think you all are full of it (particularly the guy about the shots). I have had nothing but positive experiences at Smokey Oak, both with the food and the service. This place is a classic ... go there for a good time and good food.
Love this place! It was recently reviewed on What's Eating Chuck.
I've lived in Moncks Corner for 10 years. Finally a great place to eat! We work downtown and eat out a lot in Charleston. We've tried lots of BBQ places. Moose's beats all the others hands down. Not your typical BBQ joint. 5 and 1/2 stars!
Really good BBQ and cool bar. The down side was the service, it was slow, but the food def. makes up for it. I highly recommend this place if you like good BBQ.
My roommates and I have been to The Taproom (as we now refer to it as well) 4 times now since its opening. I live at Folly and Ft. Johnson and its just all too convenient to have such a great place to go so close by. The BBQ is great (the sauces could be a bit different, but with BBQ-to each his own, you know?), the burgers are HUGE and well worth the price, and the PBR is always, always cold. The latter being of significant importance as it is a Taproom and all. The draught selection is great; lots of variety. Their portions are spot on, especially for the price. All around it's a great place to grab a bite, or drink a beer with some friends.
p.s. the outdoor porch is a plus for smokers.
Wow I can't wait to go back! Home Team BBQ has long been my favorite place to get BBQ in Charleston but living on JI, I seldom make the trip over there. Smoky Oak just solved my BBQ problem plus it offers a broader menu of other fantastic food and a good selection of beers!
The Spinach Artichoke Dip was great and the bread it came with really made it stand out.
My pulled pork sandwich was solid, I enjoyed sampling the different sauces but I think the Carolina Mustard base was my favorite.
The Collards were actually some of the best I've ever had. Not sure if it was due to "Wilber's Hopped Up Vinegar" I poured on but they had a unique taste to them, a slight sweet flavor I thought that gave it that something extra.
My meal came with a couple pieces of Cheddar Corn Bread which were very rich and definitely a nice side
My extra side of Onion rings was a generous portion and were incredible. I was hesitant to order them because most places serve the standard boring crusty tiny onion rings, but the waitress recommended them and I'm glad I listened! The rings were big and the fried breading was light and flaky.
We were a little disappointed the oven isn't ready yet and we couldn't order a pizza but all the more reason to go back later! It's exciting to have such a fantastic place right in the heart of JI, I can't wait to go back!
Not sure about the previous comment because that wasn't our experience, but here's ours:
W popped into Smoky Oak "The Taproom" (as I will now affectionately refer) last night with several friends and we were blown away!
This amazingly eclectic cool space with one of the coolest bartops I'd ever seen, as we understand from Shannon (Chef Rick's better half!), the bartop was an accident! Turns out the damn thing wouldn't dry after staining and urethaning so they apparently scrapped off the non-drying urethan and applied a quick drying satin finish of some sort (2 to 3 shot's into the night so don't recall the exact satin finish).
Long story short, there are many reasons to go to the "Taproom" in our opinion, but when you get there, CHECK OUT THE BARTOP....very cool! Then you can dig into this awesome menu!
We met up with a couple of very cool local cat's that definitely know the restaurant/bar business well (the proprietors of DD Pecker's Wing Shack in West Ashley - Derek Harris and Brian Lawson), who give this hot new local restaurant and watering hole their blessing and commitment as a client!
Oh yeah, Chef Rick's apparently been around the block a couple of times so "green behind the ear's" he's not! Turns out the chef used to own (or manage....keep in mind the shots aforementioned!) AL DI LA in West Ashley, Lombardi's and several others in North Carolina.
This guy put together a menu that could make a British Royalty Guard week in the knee's! A well thought out menu with awesome entrees, appetizers, salads and sandwiches.....eclectic simplicity!
That's all I got to say about that!
So we would like to again toast our glass to the "Taproom" and some of the Taproom Team: Shannon (congrat's on the new baby!), Mia (you rock and great to see you on JI), Chef Rick (should have seen the smile on this guys face as he showed us all the pictures of that new baby boy he and Shannon brought into the world!) and Mario!
Not that you need it, but we wish you the best of luck and all the success imaginable! We will be back soon (and often) to your amazing new restaurant/bar!
Thank you for providing us with a well needed BBQ extraveganza (with lots of personality) on James Island.

Hometown treasure!" by Matt and Amy Teeter
August 28, 2009 - Likes it - I just have to tell ya. I been to a few bbq places. Some are good, others are average...But Moose's Famous BBQ is the best in the Low Country! And its not just how amazing the food tastes but ,get this! Its FRESH! you watch them bring fresh servings on the buffet CONSTANTLY and we Love that! You can have mac and cheese, bbq, smoked chicken, hash, freshly cut brisket, freshly cut pork loin, and the Cole Slaw is to die for! Banana pudding and much much more! We were very comfortable and Love that the owner makes his rounds to make sure his customers are welcomed and Happy with the service and the food! .The walls are designed with rustic framed puzzles that I was told the owner and his wife did themselves. Gives you a sence of comfort, relaxation and enjoyabilty This is Truly a Hometown Treasure! My favorite place to dine by far! Don't take my word for it- Take the drive to 1440 South Live Oak Drive (Hwy. 17-A)
Moose's is what mom and pop is all about!
You can't beat the price and the amazing people!
