I really adore the food at this place; it's comforting and unpretentious but there's enough imagination in it to keep things interesting. It's true that the service isn't especially smooth, but it's never detracted from my experiences and the waitstaff is always, at least, pleasant. The vegetable stew is one of my favorite things to eat in Charleston.
Great local spot with amazing beer and wine selections.
We order Park Pizza about 1-2x a month. We would order it more if we weren't trying to watch our spending. That being said, when the pizza arrives to our front door (they deliver to Hanahan folks!) we are always thrilled with the results. My husband always has the same thing every time. He throws together a pizza with jalapenos and bbq pork that he swears is phenom. I usually go with the pizza of the month which never fails to disappoint. The combos there are so good that I rarely go to the regular menu pizzas but when I do, again I am pleased with the variety and flavor combos that most other pizza joints would shy away from. I will say that the Partridge in a Pear Tree (Cheddar, Mozzerlla, Chicken Sausage, Pear Preserves, Sauteed Onions, Dates...sounds crazy, right..crazy good is more like it!) from December's Pizza of the Month is my all-time fave and I cry on Jan 1st not because another year has passed but because I can no longer get that pizza. ( I tried...they don't have the stuff anymore.) In any event, when ordering keep an open mind and branch out from the pepperoni and transcend into Thai , Indian, Crawford or even She-Crab when ordering pizza. You'll be pleasantly surprised and back for more.
We loved the Early Bird Diner before it ever appeared on any Dive show. What I love is how the service and food has stayed the same despite the lines that now plague the sidewalk in the morning. We've come to discover however that Wintertime is a great time to come back to the Bird since the lines are diminished now that tourists have flocked back home. For us the chicken and waffles and Curry Breakfast Eggs are all time faves. Their taters, biscuits and red pepper jelly are also delicious. Its easy to see that love goes into every bite and this stuff truly is made fresh and with some clever twists. We love the specials too when the mood hits, but its hard to steer us away from those mainstays. The special ice cream flavors are so good that we sometimes get ice cream at brunch! And for folks that think the Early Bird opens early...oh my...it does not. Check the weekend times and then head on over. Early Bird is only a name and not a time indicator of when service starts..but when it does, we are always pleased and never disappointed.
Moose's moved to Summerville and we couldn't be happier. We are also happy to see the buffet is still alive and well at Moose's after the move. The pulled pork is moist and full of smoke, and they do a good job of picking out the fat..all of which we love. If you don't smell smoke or see a wood pile, its time to move to another BBQ place. The brisket is also delicious, coming from someone who had a whole lot of brisket in Texas where its an art form. I also see things like Pork Loin that you don't expect but are delighted when offered on a buffet. The cobbler does leave something to be desired but the Banana Pudding hits the mark. Sides aren't the best I've had in town...Home Team has beat them by a mile in that area, but for the price and the drive, we make it regularly from the peninsula and were so thrilled that we don't have to drive to Monck's Corner anymore! Keep up the great work!
First things first: this is a BAR with a menu, a sports bar more specifically. Nothing wrong with that, but I somehow missed that when choosing a meet-up place for my family and parents. And evidently they didn't offer us any of their drugs. Rip-off! ;-) Just kidding.
That being said, the waitress was very friendly, it wasn't loud, it is smoke free (yay, Charleston!) and the food (while slow because we were the only ones eating) was very good and very reasonable. Fish Po' Boy, Lobster Roll, Cheese steak and the Pepperoni Rolls were all super tasty. A definite winner for a casual sports bar.
I've lived here for 15 years and my partner is a native Charlestonian. Despite what the review previous to mine says, locals *do* eat at The Wreck because, for what it is, The Wreck is excellent. It's not FIG or McCrady's, but it is impeccably fresh seafood prepared well and served in an unpretentious environment.
Yeah the owner is a grumpy old man until you get to know him, and nearly all the staff are his relatives. They do their own thing and will not cater to you. That's part of the charm. If it's not your style, don't go. But if you do go, don't bitch about it because you have been warned.
Great specialty burgers prepared with quality beef are the main attraction. The wide and creative selection of toppings makes up for minimal seasoning used in the nice, thick cooked-to-order patties. Table service during a recent luchtime visit was excellent, very attentive, and as an added bonus - extremely attractive. Comfortable interior decor and bar layout with some inviting outside tables for fair weather days. Hand cut fries were a little soggy and only lukewarm, otherwise Pawley's would receive all 5 stars. So many neighborhood bar and grills in Mount Pleasant totally miss the very basics of proper service, good food, cold beer, and a friendly atmosphere, but Pawley's is an example of how things should be done.
My go to brunch location! There are a number of great options for brunch, great sides, great drinks. Always dependable. The service some times isn't fantastic, which is the only thing that keeps me from giving 5-stars. I would always recommend Crave, especially for brunch.
Good, simple food in a diner atmosphere. No frills and has the decor of a late 70's Dennys. But the food is Okay, and interesting menu items, like alligator with grits. If you go on weekend mornings, you will see nothing but locals, lots of handshakes, old blue hairs and the southern church crowd. It is a step back in time.
pretty good food.. excellent service. a bit more pricy than bohio, but i don't mind if its local ingredients.. worth a try!
Despite the negative reviews, my husband and I decided to try this place out. It was good as was the service. We tried the sausage for an appetizer ($8) my husband had the pork belly ($11) and I had their soup special ($8) which was butternut squash with shrimp-I was disappointed that they didn't let me know it would be served cold but it was still good. The menu that day (Friday) had really good looking stuff. We will go back for sure! Oh, and their prices are definitely not expensive for dinner. We had a couple of beers each and I had a glass of wine. With tip our bill was about $50. Oh and Matt Lee (Lee Brothers) was there, wonder what he thought...
Super Delicious! Crispy chicken sandwich a must! Their spring shrimp rolls w/peanut sauce are extreme fresh and yummy! Be sure to quench your thirst w/their teas :) My sandwich was made very mild spice due to Spice Shyness. *Perfect*
Pretty darn good. And they deliver! The sides are inconsistant but the wraps are good. They use some sort of cubed up deli meat as their protiens and at first it can be a little off putting if you're expecting fresher meat but I have grown to like it. The dif kinds of tofu are what I normally go for anyway and they are great.
Could be a little less pricey but I'll deal.
I've been to Bon Banh Mi three times so far. Consistently tasty every time. I prefer the tacos over the sandwich
Just had the Fried Chicken Banh Mi Sandwich for lunch. It was the BEST THING I've eaten this year. $10 for the sandwich + $1 for tax and a cup of water. Pricey, but well worth a visit at least once a month. I didn't like the hummus appetizer.
My wife and I went in for a late supper Saturday night close to ten o'clock, pre-Built to Spill at the Farm, after the Grocery messed up our reservations. We had the foie, the beef tartar, the sweetbreads and the charcuterie. Everything was delicious. Nice to see an old school place still doing well.
Okay, so I don't know pizza like a lot of people on here. I've prob never really turned down any style or make of pizza when offered. but....dang.
This Place is awesome. Give it a try!
So far I've tried a lot of menu items before i thought to write review and not a bad word to say in the bunch.
I think the super philly is right up with the best you can get around town. I'm a big fan of the competitor in summerville..but that is a bit far of a drive for me on a regular basis.
This is a lot closer to almost anywhere in town and yummy.
Oh and definitely try a slice of the Coconut Cake if at all possible!
This is the best bagel in Charleston. Whoever is behind the baking definitely knows what they're doing and consistently cranks out perfect bagels every time. In addition to the bagels, they make all their own flavored cream cheeses in house which have all been delicious. They have a menu of amazing breakfast and lunch sandwiches or you can build your own out of their deli case. I also love that they offer Taylor Ham which I had never tried before a friend recommended it to me and now I cannot turn back. Give it a try griddled with an egg and cheese on a bagel - you will thank me. Also they offer fresh Nova lox which is nearly impossible to find at a bagel shop around here.
They have a full espresso bar as well as delicious Intelligenista house coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. The only critique I would offer is the size of the dining room is rather tiny. So if you go doing a prime time, I would probably plan on getting your food to go. But wherever you sit down to enjoy your food, you will not be disappointed!
Angel Oak is the latest occupant of this cute little spot on Savannah Highway just south of Main Road, and I have to say it is definitely my favorite so far. The husband and wife couple that have moved in here have really made it their own with lots of personal touches that really make the dining area feel like home. If you have been into this space previously, be prepared to enjoy a complete makeover. The main space now looks like a proper dining room and the servers are all well versed and friendly. We were warmly greeted by Nicole, one of the owners, and promptly seated.
All of their appetizers sounded intriguing so we tried a good variety. The winners were definitely the crab cake and the fried bacon. The crab cake was pure, sweet blue crab with just enough to hold it together and bring out the natural flavors. A spicy remoulade was drizzled across the plate that gave a nice balance. The fried bacon consisted of a plate of lightly battered, smoky thick cut bacon strips, paired with a spicy buffalo dipping sauce to amp up the flavor. The port wine pate was nice and creamy, and came potted in a little glass mason jar. It was paired well with toast points and vinegary pickled radishes and a nice chow-chow. The lobster mac and cheese sounded divine, but we found the cheese sauce to be too oily for our liking.
The entrees were all very tasty, generous portion sizes and expertly cooked. We sampled the braised short rib and shrimp and grits. The short rib was cooked perfectly, it flaked away with a fork and a gentle touch. This was definitely one of the most tender pieces of meat I have had in a while, and could only have been improved if a little more of the demi-glace was present. The stone ground grits it sat atop were creamy and hearty, and a buttery sauce and some micro-herbs brought it all together. The bang-bang shrimp and grits were decent, flecked with crisp bites of smoky bacon. However this dish needed a bit more gravy and spice to live up to its bangin name. The execution of all the dishes was top notch, technique is no issue here. However I think if the chef were a little more liberal with the seasoning and sauces he would have a home-run.
The wine list is extremely short and several essential varietals were noticeably absent. I would suggest a broader range of styles and prices to better appeal to the wine drinking crowd. The beer selection was broad and even featured some local brews. It appeared that the beer selection will vary on a rotational basis, with the current offerings displayed on a chalk board.
Overall, Angel Oak shows a lot of promise and I am excited to see a passionate team at the helm of this establishment. Having not even been open for a week, I think it is fair to say that they will only get better. The owner checked in on us throughout the meal to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. The little touches, like the slate serving platters, create a wonderful ambiance. We look forward to trying them again after they have had some time to work out the fine details. It is well worth the drive to give this place a try, it is downtown quality food in a more comfortable West Ashley environment.
