This has long been a stand-by for bringing out-of-town visitors due to the combination of reliably great food, an atmospheric setting, and reasonable prices. I have generally been pleased by the updated menu items I've tried. The recent (June, 2012) CP review has some negative comments on the scallops with pork belly, but it was a marriage made in heaven to me. My own first experience here came as part of a job interview some years ago, and that meal was part of what hooked me on moving to Charleston. There are better restaurants in Charleston, but they are not places I could go frequently. Poogan's Porch is my favorite in its class.
In response to the comment below....Wow, coming from a Summerville Hick who has traveled quit a bit to VERY high end restaurants in MANY big cities (Le Cirque in NYC, Fleur De Lys in San Fran and Vegas just to name a few) , I will say I have had mostly good experiences at Oscar's. I think the Woodlands is COMPLETELY over-rated, the food is barely average, it's snotty, and NOT worth the money. I enjoy the quaint atmosphere in the bar at Oscars, the staff is always attentive and remembers us when we walk in. I think they have good steaks, (and they are just as comparable as what I was served at the Woodlands, in an atmosphere that I do not need to wear a tie, and I don't have to whisper my conversation due to the stuffiness). But what do I know, since I am just a hick from Summerville that has probably dined in quite a few more high end restaurants than most.
i disagree my food was really good and the portions were fine, the one thing i will say the host told us there were no seats available inside, only 3 tables were being used, and only had outdoor seating, it was pretty cold outside (getting caught up on my reviews), and when we left there were still tables that had not been touched, so that didnt sit well with me, but whatever still had a really good meal
Husk does the Haute Down Home thing well, in a highly attractive package and hits most of the high notes.
1. Excellent presentation, atmosphere, design and setting
2. Copious bourbon list, good draughts, didn't look at the wine
3. Attentive and very good staff
4. The entrees were $22 and up... at this price point I expect consistent "wow." The food was very good but not consistently exciting: the beef tenderloin was the chief culprit. My duck came with this quinoa and butternut squash side and the whole thing was delicious. The cornbread and "finest hams" appetizer were both really terrific.
5. EVERYTHING has meat in it. The cornbread has bacon (YUM), the butter has pork reduction, the veggies have pork. That's not a complaint, just an FYI.
6. The bar doesn't have the capability of making anything interesting for pregnant ladies. Another down-check compared to other downtown competitors. A small complaint, meaningless for most.
I was a little confused as to why people go to $120/couple meals and dress like they've just wrapped up errands at the mall. I'd say half of the patrons were dressed too casually. Yeah, I know... it's Charleston, but these weren't all tourists.
Spent an hour at the bar two nights ago, awesome experience, one of the classier bars I've been to in Charleston and the pre-prohibition cocktails are bangin.

I had a shrimp etouffee. Nothing fancy but so well balanced a mix of flavors that I enjoyed the last bite more than the first - it grew on me with experience.
My wife comes from the Roussillion region of France, where chicken livers are eaten often. She declares the chicken livers at the Hominy Grill the best she ever had.
And let me second the comment on the lima beans. I never liked lima beans before.
The service was fair, the atmosphere unpretentious almost to a fault. The food is a bargain for the quality.
I've eaten here twice, and the food and service are great. I highly recommend the spinach salad with seared salmon. The mussels Palmetto are nice and meaty, but the broth was quite one-note.
I've eaten at midtown twice for lunch and have been twice for drinks. Great BBQ and pimento cheese sandwiches and awesome sides like fried okra. The brunch menu looks really good and I've heard good reviews. I've been for happy hour on a Friday night which wasn't too busy and been in for drinks on a busy weekend, the outdoor patio is great and the waitresses are hot. The name says Bar and Grill and it's definitely a busy bar on weekend evenings. give them a try
Despite a menu that hasn't changed in years, the food and staff of Oscar's are superlative! Blending sophisticated southern atmosphere and cuisine with Americana and a touch of Tex-Mex, Oscar's is a "Don't Miss" locale for anyone making the pilgramage to Charleston's Sister City. I've been dining there for ten years and heartily recommend the Steak AuPoivre, Fried Calamari with peppers, Seafood Burrito, Fried Green Tomatoes and of course, the Smiling Burger with blue cheese. While most of the entrees are higher-end prices (and you consistently get what you pay for), the sandwiches, appetizers and fried shellfish are reasonable enough for any Friday night between paydays.
I love places like this. Small and the staff couldn't be friendlier. I've eaten there 4 times and recommend it to everyone I work with. I've had the Gumbo, Jambalaya, Crawfish Etouffee, Hot Sausage Po Boy and the Catfish Po Boy. My favorite was the Crawfish Etoufee. The prices are fantastic and the first time I went they insisted on giving me a side of their Mac & Cheese and Bread Pudding. I loved the Mac & Cheese and I can't say I've eaten a lot of Bread Pudding but this stuff was so moist.
Never been disappointed here. Always a good selection and terrific wait staff
I have eaten here 3 or 4 times since opening, and its been great each time. I live on folly, but wear a tie to work downtown, so I think this place would appeal to everyone. Im glad it opened, because of the pork appetizer alone. Its fantastic! Also not to be missed is the fried turkey, it's excellent! Keep it up CSK, I enjoy good food and service no matter if its lunch, dinner, weekday, or weekend. Reasonably priced great food is a home run in my book.
wonderfully simple, fast especially for a folly beach eatery. only suggestion is that some of the vegetable sides could be made without the pork and be equally or more delicious and have a wider following
Best shrimp and grits in town. Whenever I have company visiting me, I always take them to Hominy for brunch. It is always well worth the wait and delicious.
