I'm suprised too - thought the dinner menue was over priced and certainly not enough food - Brunch was a much better value. My wife and i are shocked to see essentaily New York City prices at many of the new spots on upper King with out the quality- This includes The Grocery
I'm kind of suprised at the high star reviews too... The Grocery is good but it's not one of the greats. I would spend the same amount of money on a different restaurant. Good food, not awesome.
I have eaten at Hall's a few times. Most were business related and we did not really worry about the cost. I have eaten a lot of steaks in my time, and these were OK. Not the magnificent works of art the friends of Halls has described, but OK steaks. For the price, and and the amount of time needed to go through the "experience" I will eat some place else when it comes to my money. I am often asked where a good steak house is in Charleston. Oak is great and worth the money, but you can find other good restaurants in Chas. that are about half the cost.
Stopped in the other night for a drink and menu read.
I had to put the phone light on menu to read, tiny lettering & dim light.
Ended up ordering the Beef Carpaccio and the Lamb/Pork wontons from the 'Starters'.
The carpaccio was awesome, just the right amount of heat from the chile, and literally melts in your mouth.
The wontons were delicious as well. Served piping hot and tasty as well.
Now the bad part. These 2 apps were $14 combined. The carpaccio was served on a plate about the size of a tea saucer or dessert plate, paper thin & one layer thick. Big on flavor - short on quantity. The wontons...5 in all, served on the same size plate, again, a small portion for the price.
Add to this a $5.50 can of beer and it starts to add up fast. I also found it odd that there was no draught beer. I know cans are all hip these days...but really $5.50? Dinner plates start around $12(it is a very limited menu) and climb up from there...with your can of beer in an old gas station. Obviously, some love goes into the food but if you have an appetite, or give due consideration to the value of a dollar, this may not be the place for you.
good food, but too crowded now. Also, sad to say the owner, though Irish, has NO idea how to cook a proper scone!

Wow, I'm pretty surprised at how well-reviewed the Grocery is here. I went with a group of 10, and none of us was particularly pleased with the food. The service was great and the decor was nice, but the food was overpriced for what it was and I feel like there are other restaurants downtown with a similar concept and better execution. I will not be going back.
Our dinner was less than inspiring, the kabobs were ok but boring, the wings were the same as was the burger. The food was just very mediocre. Their house red wine was decent and a relatively good buy. The cocktail I had was unique and I enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty loud inside and outside, but service was good. I will be back to try the all day breakfast options, though.
I was so excited to try out Ms. Rose's and walked away disappointed.
The food was so so but the service was terrible. Our server forgot our appitizer, let our water glasses sit empty and we had to remind her we ordered a second round of cocktails.
We ordered the gnocchi and a ruben. I asked to subsitute the protien in the gnocchi and our server said there was an upcharge, which i expected but it was her delivery that threw me off. The gnocchi was good, lots of flavor. The ruben was just average. I will give them credit for their fries. They were awsome.
I won't rush back anytime soon.
Love the style and the location is great in Avondale! Great beer selection and the food that I ordered was very good, albeit the presentation was a little lacking. I was however, a little disappointed in the margaritas. They taste wonderful, slightly sweet and tart, but when I think of a Mexican restaurant, I really picture large margaritas - not a small cynlinder glass filled with mostly ice. I want a giant margarita - at a good price. Otherwise, they seem successful and I hope that it continues!
The food I tried was bland. I tried the chicken taco and the Baja fish taco. Both were bland compared to Taco Boy. My friend had the Grilled Mahi taco and the Carne Asada taco. He agreed that the food needed more punch. The service was great and I liked the surf videos. Won't be back anytime soon.
I love going through the drive-thru at BBC, but the service inside the restaurant has been awful on the 3 occasions I've eaten there. I don't mind laid-back service, but in one visit, my waitress forgot multiple drinks, didn't put my order in at the same time as my dining companions', and wasn't at all apologetic. In an attempt to rush my food out, the kitchen delivered my "sautéed" fish almost entirely raw. To be fair, they did comp my meal - but I don't think I'll risk eating in, again.
I used to love Groucho's but I just went through the drive thru and ordered a white moose with extra sauce (which I didn't get)and a sweet tea. This cost me $10. The whole way home, all I could think about was that I feel ripped off. I can get a gourmet sandwich at Ted's Butcher block for the same price.. with Mac & Cheese!

The food was worth the drive from Goose Creek. The Spanish Sunrise was a perfect brunch beverage and the coffee was nutty, rich, and delicious. The service was slow and server's attitude was flippant and off-putting.
I am not a fan of the industrial/warehouse setting but I understand it is a design trend. It feels unfinished and unwelcoming and cold.
So-so food, drunken college kid crowd, and the beer selection is just a step above other bars on Shem Creek. I can't recommend this place, unless you just want to pound beers and yell a lot. I will probably revisit in a few months when the new bar crowd dies off.
I agree about the view, the food, etc. But there ain't nothing 'gracious' about the service. We laughingly call the man behind the counter "the bar nazi". Still we suffer his rudeness for the sunsets and oysters! Like they say at Bowens " some like it, some don't".
So I tried this place out and it's a little out of the way for me. There were some things I enjoyed and some things I felt could be better.
There was a 4square special for checking in and getting a free snack. I got the fried green tomatoes as I like FGT. I agree with the person above who mentioned this could be more seasoned. The cornmeal breading was kind of meh (like Shake and Bake would've been better lol) and it seemed the definition of seasoning that was performed was dump some salt and pepper into one spot.
I tried the tuna next. This was very tasty. I was just not thrilled at the price associated. I'm just glad that they do half off apps on Tuesdays to mitigate this a bit.
I also tried the ricotta cheese. The honey that came with the cheese and toast was a nice compliment. The ricotta in general by itself does not tend to have a lot of flavor, so the honey gave it just enough to be a nice little snack.
For dinner I had the chicken. It came with collards and mac/cheese. There was nothing special about the mac and cheese (a lot of places in town seem to add some little flare to mac and cheese to make it more memorable for grown ups), but then again this was just a side, so I really shouldn't expect much. The collards were decent after they gave me some extra vinegar to add. I think a little bit of salt would have helped too. The chicken was ok. I think the light breading they used was to better emphasize the honey. It was not bad, but not something I'd rave about.
The service was reasonable. There were times where there were lulls and times where they were well on top of things. I was waited on by a cute server named Ashley. I would go back if she asked me to go back lol.
Angel Oak is about a 30 minute drive from my place. It needs to come up with some more innovation to conventional items if I want to just randomly decide to go there with any kind of frequency. It should do more than simply be a place that has items A, B and C. It should have an awesome and innovative take on items A, B and C if it wants to draw people from further out.
This place is nothing to write home about. I tried it for both lunch and brunch. Nice laid back decor, but the service is slow even when its not busy, and their brunch menu is very limited. My eggs were cold and hard, but my grits were very tasty. I had lunch there as well. Burger is fine, but doesn't stand out. There are enough other places with better views that I'd go back to before heading back to the Shelter again.
We had a wonderful dinner at Angel Oak Restaurant, but stopped in for brunch and were disappointed. The food was good, but the portions were ridiculously small. The Eggs Benedict came without a side, with just a smidgen of hollandaise sauce, and there were just a few silver dollar pancakes on my friend's plate. We left hungry.
