Re: “EVO

Saturday night after some debate we decided we still wanted pizza but wanted to try something new. We picked EVO due to CCP's reviews.

Point of fact I would like to make first, I never order pizza from chain stores. They are overpriced, over sauced and the pizza is usually lousy.

We were probably the oldest couple in the place being in our (very) late 40's, as we looked over the menu I could not tell if we were in a pizza place or not. I couldn’t find most of our favorite toppings on the menu but the one I did find was $3! Strike one.

After looking at the beer prices I felt it necessary to ask the server if the price was reflecting any sort of stock option in the brewing company.

There wasn't any sort of normal beer to choose from. They had what seemed like dozens of craft beers. I have had these beers before, I did like “Theobroma” from Dogfish but it isn't easy to find anymore. There are certain foods that I demand a decent beer for such as, cheeseburgers, fish & chips and PIZZA. I will drink Guinness with any food on the planet but I was told they didn’t have that on tap or in a bottle. Strike two. (Thank goodness we were not far away from Madra Rua Pub.)

After looking the menu over for 10 minutes or so and having the server come by every 2 minutes to get our order we decided to just order the Focaccia appetizer and two drinks. The server asked if we were ordering anything else and we declined because there wasn’t anything we wanted to eat on the menu, the server got snippy and disappeared. After 20 minutes we got our drinks and a plate of the Focaccia and oil. We needed more oil because the Focaccia was not stale but hard from being too close to the ovens maybe? (I would suggest a few shakes of a good Modena Balsamic Vinegar along with the oil for the Focaccia) Strike three.

I am not sure where the young people who were in there work, but they must be making more money than this engineer. I see no reason at all for the prices of the food and more importantly the beer.
After a few pints of Guinness down the street we picked up a pizza on our way home. Don't worry Mr Baroni, we will never be unfaithful to Baroni’s NY Pizza again!!

Re: “Monza

The food is good. The tables are tiny. Perfect place for a party of four infants or two skinny midgets.

Re: “EVO

I love EVO, especially their employees, the Pestachio Pesto pizza, and the amazing chocolate, but I must agree 100% on the out of control beer prices. I paid $8 last year for a Coast Boy King pint, then the next week went around the corner to Sesame and paid $4 for the exact same thing. I've also paid $8 for Dogfish Head before, which is ridiculous (as are the New Belgium prices). I love going there for the ambience, food, and people, but it's turned into a special occasion restaurant rather than a neighborhood craft beer hangout.

Re: “Mellow Mushroom

Food is your usual tasty mellow mushroom fare (decent quality pizza, wide variety of toppings/sauces). The place looks really cool and is really large on the inside. The problem with this place is it is LOUD. Horribly loud. Food court at the mall at Christmas loud. Forget about having a pleasant conversation in the place. It has really high ceilings and they really need to do some work (adding some sort of sound absorbing materials on the walls/ceilings) to make this not extremely annoying. But hey this is the old fart in me coming out so it may not bother everyone. I'll stick to takeout/delivery or head to the downtown location instead!

Re: “Andolini's Pizza

I think the best pizza around is La Pizzeria in Mt Pleasant, but if I'm desperate I don't consider Andolini's to be as terrible as some make it out to be. I've never had GREAT pizza in the south but look at what this place is up against-- Papa Johns, Dominos, etc... Relatively speaking, it's not THAT bad.

I love all of the "I-lived-in-New-York-for-a-few-years-so-I'm-an-authority" comments on this site. A lot of people have-- just because you did doesn't you automatically have good taste.

@ Jaxx-- It's Bleecker Street. With a "c." Do you pronounce Houston St. as "Hewston St." too?

Re: “EVO

Great pizza. Amazing ingredients. Pistachio Pesto the best for sure (add arugula and sausage). The chocolates and candy bars from Sweeteeth are to die for. I wouldn't waste my time or money on the appetizers. Soup is nice though. My biggest complaint about EVO is in the beverage department.

http://evopizza.com/currentmenus/evodrinks…

First off, there is not a single beer less than $5. The beer selection is great, but who can afford to have more than one. Many of the beers are worth the price (Ommegang, Dogfish head), but many are not. Allagash White and Brooklyn Lager (while delicious) should not cost $5. And don't get me started on New Belgium. No way in hell will I pay $5 for anything they brew. Last beverage complaint would be that they do not serve coffee!?? If you have wonderful chocolates the least you could offer is coffee. Coffee drinks are the easiest way to make a profit on a non-alcoholic beverage.

I think EVO is a great restaurant that would benefit from a fresh look at pricing.

Re: “EVO

I don't know about "best pizza in charleston" but that's only becuase I haven't tried it all yet! Went in for lunch and ordered the margherita pizza. It was delicious! I moved to Charleston from DC and these pies definetly rival the famous 2 Amy's in DC. EVO is definitely worth it for the pizza. Also got the arugula salad with procuitto; light, delicious, perfect starter to the thin italian style pies.

Re: “Carolina Crust Gourmet Pizza

I think the comments are a tad bit extreme. The chairs around the tables are uncomfortable, however, the bar stools are great. The pizza is wonderful, especially "The Joe". You can find anything to complain about if you want to. I do hope that the owners will pay a little bit more attention to the service. You have an excellant opportunity going for you. The menu is delicious. You tend to have a dissappearing act going on there though. Sometimes it seems like it may be a "Serve Yourself" bar.

Re: “Vespa Pizzeria

I concur with RRIP; the decor is terrific both inside and out but the meal was very slow and is trailing EVO, Monza, and Brixx in terms of wood-fired pizza. They get points for the quality and freshness of their toppings, as well as the balance of flavors in the crust. However, they're still working out the difference between "crispy" and "burnt" crust. Realistically, if you want pizza on DI, Orlando's is still the way to go... both for the value and the quality.

Re: “Monza

Monza's pizza is pretty good in my opinion, but I definitely think it is overpriced. I think EVO in North Charleston does a better job of this style of pizza.
