Comment Archives: Locations: Restaurants: Mexican: 3 Stars

Re: “MEX 1

Love the style and the location is great in Avondale! Great beer selection and the food that I ordered was very good, albeit the presentation was a little lacking. I was however, a little disappointed in the margaritas. They taste wonderful, slightly sweet and tart, but when I think of a Mexican restaurant, I really picture large margaritas - not a small cynlinder glass filled with mostly ice. I want a giant margarita - at a good price. Otherwise, they seem successful and I hope that it continues!

Re: “MEX 1

The food I tried was bland. I tried the chicken taco and the Baja fish taco. Both were bland compared to Taco Boy. My friend had the Grilled Mahi taco and the Carne Asada taco. He agreed that the food needed more punch. The service was great and I liked the surf videos. Won't be back anytime soon.

Re: “Cha Cha's Mexican Grill

My hubby and I went to check the place out for the first time tonight, and I gave it 3 stars bc I did like the atmosphere. We thought the chips and salsa were yummy, as the salsa was good and spicy with some kind of fruit in it? Good stuff! The frozen screw driver tasted was not too good, and I thought my margarita wasn't too good. My husband's lamb taco was really good! My fish taco was fishy though ugh, so that was disappointing. We live on Ji, so appreciate the JI vibe, but for food sorry but we both agreed we'd stick to Zia. The place is new though, so hopefully the food will get better! Overall cool joint to hang out!

Re: “Taco Mamacita

Lots of staff to be sure and a bartender with social skills were pluses here (no mock on Poes or Home Team).

We got a queso appetizer that was advertised as made in a cast iron skillet. It was not, but it was good and emough for at least 3 people.

Ordered 2 tacos and a side, and a single taco. previous poster mentioned a side with a taco, you do not get a side with a single taco.

Sloppy Jose- cheesy and tasty could use more fritos for the crunch.
Jerk Chicken- salso was good, chicken lacked jerk flavors though
Royale- probably my favorite of the three, standard taco flavors but good and the most filling of the three.

Corn as a side lacked flavor- had some background chipotle flavors, and the cheese was bland. Was expecting more vibbrant flavors from this one. Also, very small portion.

Beer selection is ok, 3 mexicans on a draft and some rotating crafts. Bit expensive on the mexican beers 5.50 for a pacifico, 5 for dos xx.

We will be back to try some of the other menu items. I'd say it is a good start, pricing is a bit high at $3.99 a taco though.

They have a very good tequila selection, I will need to try one next time to check on proper service.

Re: “Zocalo

Went for lunch last week and the food was solid, my only problems were with the wait staff. My friends and I got there at about 11:15 on a Tuesday morning dressed in ties, obviously having come from work and the waiter was really pushing us to order beers. I'm not turned off by the idea of beers at lunch but we were obviously in the middle of our work day and the waiter's pushiness made us uncomfortable. Also we could hear him talking to the people at the 2 tables near us and the conversations were pretty similar, he was pushing the alcohol pretty hard and also using profanity which is a bit unprofessional for a waiter at a restaurant. He probably would have made a good bartender but as a waiter he needed some work. He did make good recommendations on the food and I enjoyed my meal. My only complaint about the food was to do with my side item, the corn puff wagon wheels. Those seem completely ridiculous to even serve. I'm sure the place would be better in the evening or happy hour when I can take my time and enjoy a beer, but when I just wanted to eat it was annoying not to be able to just order lunch without getting pestered about drinking.

Re: “Taco Boy

This place has a great building and location (except it is always really loud inside), and it also has slightly above average food and drinks selection for a Mexican restaurant IN CHARLESTON. The tacos and food in general is way better at La Nortena, plus its cheaper. However, La Nortena is in North Charleston and not filled with people, so its not that fun usually. I don't love this place, but it is not terrible (especially not just because of no happy hour, jesus).

Re: “Santi's

This place isn't bad...the atmosphere is great. The staff (in my experience) are all really nice and accomodating. The food is pretty standard though for a Mexican joint. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's what I think you would expect from just about any strip-mall type Mexican place. But what do I know?

Re: “Caliente

Overall, I would say Caliente is mediocre. The food is good, but I would not say outstanding. On the 2 occasions that we visited, the parking lot was full, but only about 1/2 the restaurant was filled. There were way too many people working (or not working--I guess waiting for customers). The prices for food are reasonable, but the drinks are way overpriced. The Margarita was good, but too small for $8, especially since it's made with wine. Caliente will have to work very hard to make the location work. The chef seems to be very nice and open to suggestions. I would recommend lowering the prices, offering affordable drinks and a few outstanding signature dishes and Caliente will be a hit!!

Re: “Zia Taqueria

Two of us went here about 5:30pm on a Friday, it was not too crowded, & we sat outside since it was nice. Once we figured out that we order & pay at the bar inside system, we sat down and decided on what to order. I went inside to order from the bartender. She was not friendly at all. In fact, the conversation went something like me saying Hello & placing my order and her saying,"green or red sauce. chicken or pork. that's $29.00" . the guy who brought us out our chips & salsa was equally without any personality, and walked off without a word or smile when we said hello and thank you to him for the chips/salsa. The only person that was personable and friendly was a guy who I am assuming was the owner (tall blond fellow) since we heard him talking about how old the desk inside in his office was to an adjacent table. He actually spoke to us and asked us how we liked the food and thanked us for coming out. Nice. On to the food. The salsa is good, tasted fresh, and our tacos, etc were all very good as well. I would eat here again, but I wouldnt go for the service or atmosphere. Which makes me wonder, how long can a business last, even with good food, if the service is poor/unfriendly?

Re: “Taco Boy

Food was good, not sure it was worth the 45 minute wait. Was glad to see they didn't over use cilantro in anything I tried. My one complaint is that the music was SO loud that I couldn't hear anyone at my table. I tried to tell the waitress several times that the volume was excessive, but she couldn't hear me (isn't that a clue?) so I gave up.

Loved the restroom - men and women in the same room. I could tell the men were more put off than women. LOL

Overall, good food but I'd probably get take out next time to save my voice.

Re: “Taco Boy

The atmosphere at Taco Boy is fantastic. They were very busy, but we were seated promptly, and the service was good.

The chips were fresh, but the salsa had an overabundance of dried oregano. I had the Taco Boy salad with flank steak and roasted poblano dressing, and it was delicious. My boyfriend had the carne asada taco and the grilled chicken taco, and while they tasted fresh, they were lacking in flavor.

Of the three Mexican restaurants I've been to, I prefer Uno Mas to Taco Boy and Zia Taqueria.

Re: “Zia Taqueria

The chips were stale and the salsa was ketchup-y, but the tortilla soup was tasty. The woman with whom I placed my order was quite cold; the service could be greatly improved.

Re: “Taco Boy

Decent food, great atmosphere, definitely over priced. I got brunch and had to pay for a side of pico de gallo. Service is usually good unless it gets crazy busy.

Re: “Taco Boy

The new location is very nice, great remodeling of old warehouse, and fun atmosphere. Food is not their strong point. If you are looking for mexican fare like LaHacienda this is not for you. The guacamole though is the best I've had. Service was fine and a great place to get together with friends.

Re: “Taco Boy

Went the other night to the new Taco Boy and so excited about their location downtown. Maybe this wasn't how it is all the time but we didn't have a great experience. It was really slow and we still had a hard time getting drinks from the bartender. I will agree with another commenter that the service was the worst part of our experience. The food was pretty bad too. It's not that it tasted bad but ingredients were missing from all of the orders and they were really plain. I'm going to write it off to them still just getting started and I really hope things are different when we return (which we will definitely do!)because it is a great building with wonderful renovations.

Re: “Taco Boy

As someone whose workplace is near this TB location, I can say that we at my office are very pleased to have another option nearby. The food was pretty good for the most part - the guac was outstanding, and the atmosphere was great. I can't say that I was blown away with the food, but the service was good, and I give serious props to the owners for investing back into this area of town in such an environmentally responsible way. Will definitely go again!
