I had received a $25 gift certificate from The BBQ joint and was looking forward to trying it. I am sooo sorry that I ever walked into this place. I took a friend and we ordered the sandwich, side and tea for $9. I told the guy behind the counter I wanted to only use $12.50 of the certificate and save the balance for my next visit. The next thing I knew this little fat turd walked up and told me "no, it's a one time shot". I said it was a gift certificate, basically money that I had pre-spent in his store for food later. He said if I didn't like it I could "get the fuck out". I told him he was an asshole (but he knew that already) and for him to give me my certificate back. He grabbed it and said no. So he was going to STEAL MY MONEY! There were small children nearby and so I calmed down and rather than smashing his head against the counter while my new girlfriend watched, I chose to just take my plate of food. Well that was another mistake. I travel all over the south and I am a huge BBQ fan, and have eaten at pretty much most of the favorites in SC, GA, and NC. This was an embarrassment to a pig. It tasted like he scraped it from a dog's butt. It was flavorless. Don't believe me? Read the Yelp.com reviews. The BBQ hash tasted like it was BBQ from last month that he couldn't sell and he just mixed in some ketchup. The rice was even bad. How do you make rice bad??
Two solid days of diarrhea later I finally got my strength back. This little troll that owns the place should move back to Ohio and get his job back at the DMV. He knows nothing about BBQ. Shealy's, Dukes, all of the Bessinger guys, Browns, Lexington, etc. they know BBQ. Good luck if you go. It is a waste of a good pig.

I used to live down the road from this place and was always a huge fan of their food. I will never go back after what happened the other day. While our waitress took forever we chalked it up to how busy it was since the Cajun Fest had just ended. But while looking around for our food (which took almost 40 minutes to get there) we noticed one of the employees go into the bathroom with a girl. In a bathroom with no stalls it was pretty obvious what he was going in there to do. After about 15 minutes he and the girl returned and he went back into the kitchen. I wrote a note on our receipt and told the waitress who tried to assure us he didn't work there. Yet he was wearing their uniform and alternated between the kitchen and behind the bar. After this experience I will not be back..
Blackened doesn't nessisarily mean it's bbq. Dry chicken, burnt sausage, and tastless bbq no wonder they provide so many different sauces to drown the flavor into the food with. Top that off with a rude staff and you get a James Island local that'll be driving to Home Team for his BBQ fix.
I will never come back. Between the awful service and the blatant disrespect from management, Smoky Oak has lost a James Island local forever.
I don't know where these people have had barbeque before. Quite possibly the worst BBQ I've ever had. You eat it for days (burping it back up) and you feel sick after leaving there. The fried Chicken is again the worst I've ever had. I guess people just like it because you get 10 pounds of food on your plate. The sides don't help out. The tea is good.
i would give it zero stars if i could...their bbq is bad at best, and the service is even worse. they are not only rude, but when they mess up your order (in the drive thru), they do absolutely nothing to fix it and don't even apologize. I went through the drive through and placed my order directly with the girl at the window, and she proceeded to get it COMPLETELY wrong. Then when we called up there to tell them we got the wrong thing they said, we're about to close, next time you come back just tell them what happened and it will be on the house...then when we went back, it was far from "on the house" they actually raised their prices and now charge tax on their menu, when before it was all included (but of course they neglect to inform you that they now charge sales tax)....
as a JI resident and frequent diner at local restaurants around the area, i will never go back there, esp when i can get better service and food at multiple bbq places on the island (melvin's, smokey oak)
This barbeque is just ok at best, nothing like the Duke's in Ridgeville! Almost everything in the resturant is super unhealthy so I won't be back, so bad for your health.
Go here for the beers on tap, not the BBQ. It looks like a dive, and they sell dive-y food. Some times this is fine, but they charge standard BBQ prices, and serve you something that looks like they did anything but smoke it for a half day (maybe a little boiling, maybe a little gas grill). I don't know, it wasn't very BBQ to me. And worse, they didn't trim the gelatinous fat (and there was a lot of it) from their brisket before serving. The presentation was a sloppy looking pile of thinly sliced meat, 1/3 of it being fat, completely dripping in some sort of broth and it's own grease. It was wet and sloppy. I could have made the same dish with my crock pot. I wish this was an exaggeration.
I had my first dining experience at Smoky Oak Taproom last night. The best part of the meal was the beer. They had quite an interesting and unique selection, even though they didn't have the first couple I attemped to order.
The food was another story. My three dining companions and I all tried the BBQ. Between the four of us, we had the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. We were all greatly disappointed in our food. The brisket and pork came out full of fat, watery, and seemed like it had been boiled. There was no hint of a smoky flavor. The macaroni and cheese looked delicious but lacked any flavor at all. The collards were way too sweet, as was the cornbread. The rice and hash was bland. The best part of the meal was the ribs my friend ordered, and they were just acceptable. I'm not one to leave food, but I left at least half of it there last night. I may go back for the beer but will definitely not eat there again.
It seems like many others had issues with the service, but we had no problems there. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive.
For 2+ years now my wife and I have heard rave reviews for Fiery Ron's BBQ. We love BBQ, and trying new restaurants. We are definitley loyal if we love a particular place, and we often find ourselves recommending bars and restaurants to family and friends in and out of towners. We also go to Sullivans beaches nearly every weekend. So we walk into Hometeam very excited about trying out the place. It was around 3pm in the afternoon on a Sunday I think. We stood there in the doorway for at least 10 minutes with servers, bussers, bartenders, and probably managers walking by several times. It was busy, I will give them that, but we not so much as had a look in our direction. I've been in the food and beverage business for nearly a lifetime, and don't mind waiting for great food. What pisses me off more than bad service, is not even being acknowledged that we exist in that moment in time! So after being ignored for about a total of 15 minutes, and feeling like a dumbass for waiting that long, we left and went across the street to Poe's and once again had an enjoyable experience! To the staff, at least say "hello," or even "we will be with you in a few minutes." Terrible first impression there Ron. I'll take my $ down to that BBQ joint across from Buddyroe's.
Had a call in order to try the BBQ. I worked in the restaurant business for 18 years so I know my stuff. Said it would be 25 minutes. Left home and got there at the 25 minute time I was given. I stood there another 20 minutes after I told one of the bartenders I was there for a call in. No one said hello, get out of the way, nothing. Finally someone came, brought my food. The total was $7.53 and I handed her a $10, Which she replied do you really need change? 30% tip for cold food, heck no, where is my change. Not impressed with the food, can get the same anywhere. No front of the house manager to be seen anywhere. Bartenders should be taking the togo orders not the waitstaff. Improvements must be made or the place will not survive till June.
