We went for lunch on a Friday. We got the Red Dragon, SC Crunch, Diablo and Niminobi. We were hungry. The sushi was very pretty, however the presentation was
a retangular white plate. No pretty garnish, nothing. The rolls were expensive which
is okay if the sushi is outstanding. It wasn't. The sushi lacked the flavor of fresh fish. The only flavor we could detect was that of the sauce and/or the topping on the sushi. Neither of us could tell with our eyes closed what we were tasting, fish or filler. It was passable sushi, but I expected great. My real issue was the service.
After finishing our $62.00 lunch, (including two draft beers), we sat for 10 minutes staring at empty, dirty dishes. No one came to take them. We finally had to wave someone down to ask for our check. I expected better.
yep, pretty good but there are places equally good and not over-priced as long as you don't mind not being "scene"-ha
Visited Oku for the first time last Friday night.
Our reservation was for 7:15 P.M. We arrived just before then and the first thing I noticed was how packed the restaurant was. Looking at the crowd it was no surprise that our table wasn't ready yet, so we cruised over to the bar and ordered drinks.
And we waited. We waited for quite some time until about 7:40 when we were seated. Our table for two, well it sucked. It was right up against the bar and I felt boxed in by the bar patrons on both sides of us, and had to ask for space more then once.
Our server was very sweet, although it was very apparent that she was extremely rushed and stressed. She went flying through the evening specials and about halfway she admitted that she forgot exactly what they consisted of.
We ordered appetizers and sushi rolls. I was impressed with the apps, they were unique and not something I would find at just any restaurant. The sushi that we ordered was tasty, however I wasn't blown away by the quality. Personally I feel the sushi at Bushido or Tsunami is just as quality, if not better.
Feeling a little underwhelmed at this point, Oku did something completely unexpected that brought us back. Earlier in the evening the manager stopped by our table to chat, and we informed him that our visit was a birthday celebration. After dinner was served he brought out cake and champagne for the two of us, on the house.
We left feeling satisfied and happy. I would like to return for happy hour to give Oku another try.
Sake House by Tanger:
3 out of 5 stars.
Rice was good.
Steak was very good.
Ginger sauce was good.
Chef was good with interaction and did well.
Cost – I would guess this is about 5 – 6 dollars more pricey than average.
Service was below average. Only got one refill and our bill had to be split afterwards from the group we were with.
Portions were smaller than average place. I normally do not eat all of my meal but I finished this one. I normally don’t eat half… yet I finished.
Vegetables were not as good as they should have been.
The food was well prepared and was tasty. The soup was your average onion soup that tastes about the same anywhere you go. The salad was fresh tasting and not overpowered by the ginger dressing put on there. For the sauces there were two, the seafood “white” sauce and the ginger sauce. The ginger sauce was above average, but the white sauce tastes like everywhere else.
For the main entrees I got a hibachi salmon and my wife got the shrimp. Others at the table got filet minion and chicken. The chef came out and was friendly and interacted well. We had a good time with him and joked around. The rice was good and it was finished quickly. It had eggs in it, some places do this and other don’t. I think the rice was slightly above average but there was not as much of it. The shrimp appetizer was very tasty and was also done quickly. For the vegetables they were actually one of the last things we received and this is unusual for most hibachi style places. I felt the vegetables were below average and they didn’t seem to be done well. As for the salmon and the steak it was also good. The salmon was average, but the filet was above average and very tender.
The cost for myself and wife was over $40 with no alcohol.
We made a special trip from Summerville to try out Bushido. We normally go to Wasabi in Summerville once a month and we would previously go to the one downtown before they expanded, and Bushido does not measure up to either of them.
We visited on a Friday evening and expected it to be busy, which it was, and the wait wasn't too long. Noise was pretty extreme so don't expect quiet conversations. My wife and I both had miso for an appetizer and along with the blandness I didn't enjoy the paper towel in my soup. We had 4 different types of sushi and while none of them were bad, none of them stood out as particularly good.
I think that Bushido is marginally better than Tsunami but definitely not better than either of the Wasabi's we have visited. If you are local or enjoy the carryout then I guess convenience is nice, but we are choosing to stick with Wasabi for our monthly sushi fix.
