Excellent experience at Grocery! both small and large parties!
Great food, diverse menu. Really great prices as well - beautiful rooftop bar.
Best service I have had yet in Charleston. Great food. Reasonable prices considering the quality. I would change the decor that may still be hanging about from its Cuban predecessor; it doesn't fit in with the simple elegance of the food and the table settings.
We went to Angel Oak to use a Groupon we had purchased in the fall. We couldn't have been more pleased with everything. The decor is really cute. I loved the mismatched napkins and chairs. Our waiter, Dwayne, was one of the best servers I've encountered (and my husband I eat out often). He was very friendly, told us about the couple who owned the restaurant, checked on us multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed. He definitely put our experience over the top. As for the food, it was fantastic. We had the brie en croute, which was just enough food for us to share as a starter. It didn't feel heavy, like cheese can sometimes, and it came with grapes and strawberries, which were a good balance to the cheese/bread. For entrees, we had the salmon and the steak au poivre. I really liked the presentation of all of the food, but the fries in a little brown bag was just perfect! It prevented them from getting soggy from the sauce on the steak. Both entrees were delicious, and the serving size was just right. Not miniscule, like some fancier restaurants, but not oversized either. I think the brussel sprouts that came with the salmon were my favorite part of the meal. They were caramelized with brown sugar and lardons. Yum! It was also nice that we just happened to go on 1/2 price wine night, where they offer 1/2 price on wines by the bottle, but also the glass! It was a perfect weeknight date night! We will defintely be back!
Heart is an amazing addition to JI! The food and drinks are incredible! Service is on par with a fine dining experience, everything is made to order...not cookie cutter!! Get the word out so HEART continues to stay on JI! We love it!!
I've eaten here about 5 times and have had excellent service and food each time. Last time I had a confit of pork shoulder. I think it was likely the best pork dish I've ever tasted. It's a destination dish. If you ever see it on the menu, run don't walk.
I love Macintosh for Sunday brunch and for dinner. I am always pleasantly surprised with my dishes and great service.
I hear what others are saying about it being loud and dim. I haven't had a problem reading the menu, and enjoy the active atmosphere. Romantic its not, so if that is what you are looking for, I'd try some where else. But if you are looking for an energetic scene and some seriously good food, this is a great choice.
Favorites include:
Poutine
Pork Belly
Gnudi (drool)
Tilefish - YUM!
Wow, wow, wow! I was initially intimidated by the set up of the Grocery's menu, but a friend had been raving about it, so we broke down and went for restaurant week. So glad we did! After reviewing the menu options, we opted to order off the regular menu. The clam appetizer with merguez sausage is an excellent combination of flavors. The bacon wrapped duck breast combined two of my favorite things flawlessly, without seeming fatty. My only complaint is that there wasn't more butternut squash! For dessert, the Banana Pudding Parfait was a perfectly elevated rendition of a southern classic. The Churros, which the server mentioned was the signature dessert, were awesome, and big enough to share. Not only was the food outstanding, but the service was impeccable. We will definitely be back!
I love getting a delicious grilled steak and oysters bulls bay!
This is my new favorite resurant. I could eat here every night and not get tired of it. The food is fresh, local, and prepared with a lot of thought. The price is appropriate for the quality of the food and much less than similar food downtown. I loved El Bohio but I CRAVE The Lot!
These folks have it nailed! The service was spot on as soon as we walked in the door. It is a cozy open room with an eclectic/rustic decor. But I can tell that thought went in to every aspect of it. Right down to the re-used cork from a wine bottle used to hold a card with daily specials. The tables had vases with flowers and herbs in them, each one different than the next. The restaurant is owned and operated by a young couple. She came over and asked if it was our first time visiting and we confirmed that was. She then went through the menu with us, noting new items that had been added for the season. Our server was gracious and knowledgeable, and not over bearing or flippant. I could tell she was sizing us up as to what kind of dinners we were. (We were enjoying a nice dinner out as newlyweds). She defiantly adjusted her service style to accommodate us. She was quietly efficient but ready to answer any question or request.
The food was great, well priced and perfectly seasoned. I will say, that I really like escargot prepared the old fashioned way. No need to hide what it actually is in my opinion, so when that app came out pan fried I was a little disappointed. But other than that the food was spot on. From the pimento cheese dip down to the best mac-n-cheese I think Ive ever eaten. I had the fried chicken, which consisted of a breast, leg and thigh. It was perfect, light, crispy and not too greasy, with a hint of sweetness from the drizzle of local honey. The collards came in a separate pot, perfect for sharing, and they offered the vinegar on the side. Smart, because some folks don't like vinegar. I on the other hand love it and poured it right in. My husbands collards were so good that he actually had to stop me from helping myself to them. His country fried steak was also perfect. The beef is local and it really makes a difference. Sadly, we bith loved our entrees so much that we ate too much of them and had no room for the in house prepared desserts. Oh well, guess we will have to go back.
Long story, short. Great meal, great service and I didn't have that ripped off feeling when the bill came, that I get all too often at restaurants in the area.
We had our first dinner at Angel Oak Restaurant a couple of weeks ago and are returning for another delicious dinner this week. The buttermilk fried chicken was so succulent and juicy that all the other people dining with us wished it had been on their plates! I had the shrimp with homemade pasta that seemed to have been prepared especially the way that I like it!
Even though the place is small, the portions were more than enough to satisfy our appetites. As a matter of fact, I couldn't finish my entree because of the salad and appetizers which we could not resist having before our meal. Try Angel Oak Restaurant to enjoy a wonderful Southern meal and atmosphere. The meal is well worth the extra distance to get there!
I love this place. It offers delicious and creative food for the more adventurous foodie. I still dream about the noodle dishes.
I have eaten more than a dozen dishes here since the opening and never fail to be impressed. Yes, you will pay more than El Bohio, but that is not a fair comparison. When was the last time you ate sausages made in-house? Pasta? I have tried things here that I would not have ordered anywhere else (Headcheese, it's incredible but needs to be shared as it is very rich). The same food downtown would cost quite a bit more.
Also, if you haven't tried it you must have the Poutine. Steak fries, chicken gravy, pork belly and fried cheese curds. Haven't had it this good since I last visited Canada.
The best food I have tasted in Charleston, for a decent price, wonderful service and ambiance. Love this place ! The staff are all pleasant, informative and eager to be helpful. Food comes out fast, is hot and obviously well made. Quality local ingredients are very apparent and the menu is perfect. I have no complaints whatsoever !
Meant to give Angel Oak five stars!
This is my first restaurant review. I live on James Island and every time we drove by Heart we said we were going to stop by. Well today we did! What a treat! My husband and I both enjoyed our meals. I had the blackened catfish and he had the cheeseburger with jalapeno peppers added. We enjoyed the sides. Our waitress was great. Everyone was friendly and the jazz music was a nice change from elevator or theme music. I plan on having my friend meet me there for lunch soon. Thank you for such an enjoyable dinner.

Best "bar" food in town!!!
The sirloin in a steamed bun, flatbread pizza and the bahn mi are out of this world. My wife really enjoyed the sweet and sour meatballs and the crab rolls (lobster style and she ate both)
One so-so dish (streak fries i.e. potatoes wedges) out of seven is 5-star. You're not going to save money by eating in the bar but a couple can share 6 or 7 amazing dishes and have a 2 or 3 drinks apiece plus a generous tip for about $150. It's laid back and delicious what more can you ask for.
Re: “Cypress Lowcountry Grille”
I would disregard any review written during restaurant week... kind of a given there.
Cypress is excellent. Been going there since they opened and it is always a favorite, even when new and great places open.
