When I first viewed this diner from the outside I was a little reluctant to go in. My wife and I said let's give it a try. Boy were we surprised. The food was nothing short of excellent, the wait staff was great and so was the service. In fact I asked our waitress who the owner was and as it happened he was sitting in the booth behind us. As we left I stopped by and let him know what a great place this was.
My wife and I went to the Bagel Shop this morning to give it a whirl in hopes of a good bagel place downtown. Having to drive over the connector to James Island is inconvenient sometimes. Here is my review: Bagels were just okay. The everything bagel didn't have much "everything" on it and my wife's sesame bagel didn't have 1 sesame seed on it, which I found to be odd. There cream cheese selection is outstanding and is definately homemade. This made up for the okay bagels. Now on to the service/ordering part...it was completly unorganized. I think the shape of the store has something to do with it. I had no idea where to order and there were not any menus visable. However one of the employee's saw that I looked confused and helped me out with the menu and took my order. The guy next to me got skipped by 4 or 5 customers behind him and seemed confused as well. My order came out fairly quick so I was off. I wish I had tasted my coffee before I left becasue it was luke warm. Coffee needs to be piping hot...not warm.
Overall, the bagels are better than any other bagel downtown, but not as good as Bagel Nation (or whatever its called now) on James Island. I'll give them an exception on the service since they just opened and hopefully will work out that kink.
Incredibly delicious food that feels like it's made from the heart. I have been numerous times for meals at all times of the day (and Sunday Brunch - AMAZING!) and the people have always been wonderfully friendly. Thank you Blue Rose Cafe for being a wonderful addition to Charleston! I will continue to recommend you to all of my friends who come to visit the city!
These guys are closed - gone - kaput.
CITYPAPER: DELETE THINGS ONCE IN A WHILE!
I give Mozzo five stars because the menu is phenomenal, but do agree that the ordering process is pretty disorganized and needs adjusting. Most joints with a menu this big are lacking on quality, but I've been here 5 times now and have not been remotely disappointed by any of the sandwiches. Anything with pastrami and/or corned beef is spectacular and the burgers are delicious. Praying that they open a downtown location.
Dennis has created to most friendly atmosphere of any restaurant in Charleston. The fare is authentically Irish and yummy!
Best new breakfast/Brunch in town! Worth the trip from Mt.P for the grilled banana bread, cinnamon coffee, grits, pancakes with carmalized bananas. Awesome menu ,SO YUMMY, and you can't beat the prices either! I'll be back soon-
Don't bother. Coffee was ok, but our bagels for our bagel sandwiches were stale as can be. They were advertised as New York bagels... tasted like they took 2 weeks to get here from NY.
They have very good hot chocolate, but pricey.
Hard to find, but worth the effort. There's more than coffee...Good healthy food!
Bluerose cafe is awesome. Great fare, good local ingredients, and nice specials.
Friendliest staff in town.
Given my wonderful experiences there every time, I have a hard time 100% believing the first poster's account of things.
Bluerose has attracted quite a following, based on word of mouth alone.
We just discovered Ritas this past summer & it is now our fav. on Folly Beach! Delicious blackened burgers w/Homemade pimento cheese & the coldest beer on the strip! What?
Great service too! Beats the other overpriced choices hands
down!
This is one of those cozy places that the locals love. Great diner-type atmosphere, with some seriously good southern comfort food. The fried chicken is to die for! It's not a fancy, romantic kind of restaurant, but, if a friendly, clean and delicious casual experience is what you're seeking, this is it.
Don't even bother going if you are vegetarian. Black bean falafel burger is cooked on meat grill so it's not even an option. Salad was $6 and consisted of sandy lettuce with very little else. Husband ordered seafood basket and it was greasy and nothing to rave about. Lunch with 2 beers, salad & seafood - $32....not worth it. Staff seems indifferent. We won't be back.
This sweet little bistro offers delicious food and a comfortable atmosphere. We've eaten there at least 6 times already and loved most everything: the spicy shrimp sandwich, pasta salad, the quesadilla and the quiche are just some of our favorites. No miss out on this soon to be favorite local spot!
I love this place! I understand the concept at each of Sal's restaurants. Sacrifice the expensive building for great quality food and they will come back. Great home style food, great prices and great people.
Wonderful staff who's charm still cannot offset the steep prices commanded by the "who do they think they are" owners. If you have money to waste paying a 40% premium for basic food then you may have found your Xanadu in this establishment.
FYI, they just opened another Johnny's at Sweetgrass Ace Hardware across from the Oakland Market in Mt. Pleasant. Parking is much easier and it's the same great food!!!
Re: “The Bagel Shop”
I'm so happy the Bagel Shop is finally open, I've been in almost everyday. The bagels are outstanding, crisp outside and chewy inside, definitely the best around by far. I've had the everything, multigrain, and cinnamon raisin bagels and the blueberry and sundried tomato cream cheese and have loved it all. The sandwiches I've tried have also been exceptional, the turkey panini, shrimp wrap and chicken salad have been excellent and I'm looking forward to trying others. The Bagel Shop was much needed in Charleston and I will be a frequent customer.
