In response to "Sacred Arrow", this is the most ludicrous, meritless and I would even go as far as to call it slanderous review of a restaurant. This is a family owned restaurant, the owners and employees are extremely hard working to make it a successful place. I go there regularly and have never once witnessed any type of drug use or "marijuana" being smoked in the bathrooms or elsewhere. Especially being that many of my friends who are off-duty and retired police officers patron the place. Majority of whom are friends with the owner. Please keep your false reviews to yourself.
Stopped in to check this place out twice in the past week. Super nice design and decor except for a few uncomfortable barstools with no backrests. Most had them, some did not. Nice to see a pool table, a rarity in Mount Pleasant these days. Excellent restroom, of course it is brand new, and perfectly clean. Fantastic service on both visits, however, this place is going to falter unless someone gets a grip on the menu. It is all over the place with no defining specialty item. Not to say every restaurant has to have one, but a wide selection with nothing really appealing or outstanding will not keep people coming back. It would not take much to wipe out some of Wild Wing's business since they have the worst wings in town. Simply offering some decent ones at half the price would do the trick and still provide plenty of profit margin to keep the doors open. Seriously, why do tiny pieces of chicken have to cost a dollar each everywhere. Also, most patrons primarily hanginng out at this location to drink and socialize are not likely to pounce on the opportunity to order a bowl of bog, macaroni, or collard greens, so please leave the comfort food to Page's Okra Grill. The burgers at The Shelter may actually be great, but does the town really need another "greatest burger in town" entry? Thankfully, The Shelter seems to be cutting into Triangle's business (so easy a Pelican wearing a happy hour sign could do it), the result of the airy bar and a nice outdoor patio with picnic tables. It is hopeful The Shelter will enjoy a long run because it is a unique space that seems to be well managed. All it really needs are "a little more reasonable than the rest" beer prices and a better focused menu. In any case, it surely is a welcome upscale and more civilized alternative to the usual Shem Creek scene.
Love the curried eggs! Probably one of my favorite things. I've also has the tomato bisque soup.. SO GOOODD!
DON'T try the catfish Po' Boy. An overcooked (previously frozen?) filet served on a big dense/doughy roll with a smear of unseasoned remoulade and topped with wilted lettuce. Accompanying side order of FGTs was mealy with tasteless but crunchy crust. Great iced tea. Other than the food being undesirable, I found the the place to be disgustingly dirty. You can just about see the germs crawling around on all the childrens books and toys. Overall, mediocre at best.
Unless your a smoker, there's nowhere in this bar to just hang out and chat/drink with your friends. Two bands, one in front and one in back on a Saturday night. We used to go here often but the atmosphere is just going downhill. The menu has few worthy dishes but there are far better places to eat. They cram people into this place like sardines. Its No wonder fights break out every weekend. Most of the bartenders do not know how to mix drinks. It really is a shame, this place used to be classy but now it's classless.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, but it's in Mt. Pleasant, which is neither, and which I avoid at all costs.....
Re: chapmanbates review
This is the thing that ticks me off about poor restaurant service especially when you've been in the food and bev. business for years. A salad which costs about $2.00 in ingredients to make can be comped easily at no loss to a restaurant with the hope someone sees this as an act of faith to get a costumer back in again, improve quality, and gain more business from rave reviews.
As far as I'm concerned I'll never go to this place. Hopefully the management will read these comments and improve things quickly or perhaps comment on the poor service and why it is this way.
Great specialty burgers prepared with quality beef are the main attraction. The wide and creative selection of toppings makes up for minimal seasoning used in the nice, thick cooked-to-order patties. Table service during a recent luchtime visit was excellent, very attentive, and as an added bonus - extremely attractive. Comfortable interior decor and bar layout with some inviting outside tables for fair weather days. Hand cut fries were a little soggy and only lukewarm, otherwise Pawley's would receive all 5 stars. So many neighborhood bar and grills in Mount Pleasant totally miss the very basics of proper service, good food, cold beer, and a friendly atmosphere, but Pawley's is an example of how things should be done.
Last weekend.... ate here but with:
poor service-a blonde waitress who was more interested in talking with guys at the bar than seating us/serving us. Food only mediocre...the guy singing as entertainment was SO loud we could not carry on a conversation at our table.
Finally, Miss Waitress brought the check...I was to get back a few dollars and change. She brought the dollars but not the change...too lazy to count out the coins and thinking SHE would be keeping the change as part of her tip?
She did NOT get a grand tip from me, far from it.
Last time here.
Fun place to go with great music... Schema plays there a lot & they are definitely worth checking out! Always a great crowd, nice bartenders, & good food. Their fried pickles & fried green tomatoes are awesome... The Lowcountry Eggrolls are one of my favorites as well! To the person that did not have good service, I would certainly say give the Shelter another chance! They were really packed the first few weeks of being open. Go try a Hurricane & enjoy the nice fall weather :)
For the last few years I have been aware that almost all of the food I have ordered here was mediocre with the occasional above average dish. Which I have been fine with me because for some reason I have always wanted to support Med Bistro and before that Med Deli, when the food was good. However, last Sunday my experience went beyond bad and I have to comment on it. I ordered a the pecan chicken salad and when it arrived it was truly one of the worst salads I have ever had. Extremely tasteless and bland and by the time the server asked how it was, I had no appetite any longer. I told her how bad it was and she asked if there was anything else she could bring me and I told her no. She took my plate with only @ 10% of it eaten and that was that or so I thought. When the bill came the salad was still on it... No manager came by to see why I had sent the meal back or for a discussion and there were only @ 6 tables at the time we were served. So I paid for it and on the bottom I said that I will never be back and I won't. When I said to the waitress that I was shocked that I was charged for such a bad meal she told me that she had asked the manager to remove it from the bill and was told no. Now, I was in food and beverage for 10 years and have never seen anything like this. I guess it goes to show that even the managers and owners have decided that bad food it too bad for the customer that ordered it. I will never be returning and I encourage all people reading this to stop bland food and stop supporting resturants that no longer seem to care about their customers or what kind of quality comes out of their kitchen. Thank you.
Terrible bartenders. Do not go for the night scene! They will without fair warning or last call, take your full drinks from you and poor them down the sink.
.
Finally a restaurant where you can feel good about what you're eating all the time. Love Verde! They are a welcomed addition to King Street.
CPH isn't what it used to be. The burgers users to be the best in town, now they're dry and flavorless. Prices have gone up on everything. Brunch is just bland and not well made. My guess is the new cooks just don't care. My once favorite restaurant is now a place I avoid unless I'm just looking for a beer. The fries and Mac and Cheese are still good, so two stars.
Good, simple food in a diner atmosphere. No frills and has the decor of a late 70's Dennys. But the food is Okay, and interesting menu items, like alligator with grits. If you go on weekend mornings, you will see nothing but locals, lots of handshakes, old blue hairs and the southern church crowd. It is a step back in time.
Had the best burger I've had in months at Shelter! AWESOME!
We would like to invite you to join us again soon and hope that we are demonstrating marked improvement in this our fourth week of service. The management and owners here intend for The Shelter to provide the best possible service and commitment to quality food at reasonable prices available anywhere in town. We appreciate your candor and are grateful for your patronage. If you decide to visit us again, please let Dave, Ryan, Thomas or Ashley know that you are again joining us. Best Regards, Thomas Berry
This place is nothing to write home about. I tried it for both lunch and brunch. Nice laid back decor, but the service is slow even when its not busy, and their brunch menu is very limited. My eggs were cold and hard, but my grits were very tasty. I had lunch there as well. Burger is fine, but doesn't stand out. There are enough other places with better views that I'd go back to before heading back to the Shelter again.
I visited Summerville the third week of Aug and went to montreux and have been there visits before my husband and I enjoyed it every time the food was great the servers were nice and we just loved the place we are from Mass and just dont have places like this we cant wait to return this place is one of the places we tell all our friends about
Re: “Back Home Bar & Grill”
First things first: this is a BAR with a menu, a sports bar more specifically. Nothing wrong with that, but I somehow missed that when choosing a meet-up place for my family and parents. And evidently they didn't offer us any of their drugs. Rip-off! ;-) Just kidding.
That being said, the waitress was very friendly, it wasn't loud, it is smoke free (yay, Charleston!) and the food (while slow because we were the only ones eating) was very good and very reasonable. Fish Po' Boy, Lobster Roll, Cheese steak and the Pepperoni Rolls were all super tasty. A definite winner for a casual sports bar.
