Re: “La Norteña

The food was fine but the server was dreadful. She called a tomatillo salsa a tomato sauce, misidentified the chili in another sauce as chipotle when it was guajillo, and couldn't answer any questions about the menu. After the food was delivered she sat at a booth with another worker and ignored us. She finally moved when I got up and headed for the table where she left the water pitcher.

As I said, the food was good but the service was so bad I'll stick with Los Parados.

Re: “Raul's Taqueria & Mexican Grill

Sadly, Raul's has impressed less each time I've had lunch.
Lunch 1 - great service and food; several months ago
Lunch 2 - good service and food; couple of months ago
Lunch 3 - Horrible table service, no limes or lemons. Tacos were okay. one month ago
Lunch 4 - This week brought some work colleagues. Table service was embarrassing. No limes or lemons available (really?), stale tortilla chips.

Regrettably I've had my last meal at Raul's. Of course, all Raul needs to do is fix the table service, keep the chips fresh and figure out how to buy limes and lemons and I might give it a shot...

Re: “Raul's Taqueria & Mexican Grill

I can see the potential but very disappointing. I've waited about a month to cool down and post this.

I had a bad feeling when I walked in and was asked If I had 'reservations'. Place was maybe 1/2 full(or half empty).
Slow inattentive service, but friendly. Our wait person had a poor grasp of the English language. I inquired if meal came w/ rice, beans, or both, as the menu does not specify. Waiter had to go ask...tells me neither...so I order a side of rice. Lo & behold, I get a side of rice, and rice & beans on entree plate. Presidente Marg on menu is non-existant, they only have Jaurez tequila. Again, waiter had to go ask. We were never asked for fresh drinks after our initial order. Seems everything went that way. I can only say food was OK, my plate came out later than the other meals, was lukewarm, and dry...which pretty much killed it. I had chicken enchiladas. I've had better.

A highlight was the chips. Waiter set them on the table and pushed them towards wall where the candle ignited the wax paper liner. He had to throw them on the floor to put the flames out. Muy flammable.

They must have known we were unhappy as Management comp-ed our drinks. Still about $34...2 entrees, nachos, and a side o' rice. After 1st experience not too motivated to go back.

Re: “Raul's Taqueria & Mexican Grill

I desperately wanted to like this place but I would be lying if I said this was worth another trip to N. Charleston. It was una cocina mas autentica but slow, overpriced, and sort of meat-gruel based with poor quality vegetables.

Re: “Raul's Taqueria & Mexican Grill

I was really excited to try this place as my family and I are always looking for good Mexican food and the reviews for Raul's have been good. We went there on a Saturday night and even though the place was only half full, the place was really disappointing. It took about 45 mins. for our food to arrive and we were ignored the whole time except for our initial drink order/chips. My rellenos were cold, my son's nachos had sour cream (which I asked them to leave off) and my husband's chicken enchiladas were dry. We were given all kinds of apologies and reasons as to why things were so screwed up, but who cares! The place has been getting good reviews and they can't have adequate staff at 7pm on a Saturday night? I think Raul's may have potential once they get their act together, but last night was a bummer. We were hungry and drove 15 mins. to get there in the rain and by the time the food came out I just didn't care anymore.

Re: “Santi's

The food here is, OK. Probably a cut above most standard Mexican fare in Charleston. I go to the one in Summerville though, and I'm sorry. Its, uh, just plain dirty. Cobwebs and dead flies in windows. Odd stains on cloth work everywhere. I'm thinkin', OK, they don't care about cleanliness in this regard, does that apply to the food too?

Re: “Zia Taqueria

This place is not that great, the ordering system is stupid, and the food in slightly overpriced. I would go next door to savory for a better meal.

Re: “Zia Taqueria

Best fish tacos around, worst bartender around. Notice all the other comments about poor service from the female bartender(rhymes with Hat) below. Not only does she make it obvious she doesn't want to be there, she doesn't want you there either. But damn those are some good fish tacos.

Re: “Zia Taqueria

The food at Zia used to be worth putting up with the terrible service/bad attitude from the bartender. Not any longer. The food, while still good, has slipped a notch, and the bartender's attitude has become unbearable. Everyone has a bad day every now and then. She seems to have a bad day every day.

Re: “Taco Boy

I had been dying to eat at the Taco Boy since we moved here. We rode to folly last weekend & did so. This place was so disapointing! The salsa was bland, my shrimp taco was like rubber. They do hit the spot with the corn tho! It was amazing! I will prolly try them again if nothing else but to eat the corn & there mojitoes were awsome too! Also the staff was really nice & quick service.

Really wanted to love this place. Food and drinks were great, though took forever to get out. Service was terrible.

Re: “Taco Boy

Prices are too high and they changed the chips. The new stylechips are awful and talking to the waiter he confided that many people are complaining but the owners will not change back. Used to go there a couple of times a month, despite the high prices. Now we are going much less as the quality of food is slipping

Re: “Caliente

My husband and I tried Caliente for a meal and found it to be just okay. Our server was friendly and she started us with a basket of thick, fried corn tortilla chips. The salsa was very fresh but thin and heavy on the vinegar without any discernible heat. The wine was fair (fresh, generous pours) but the beer is overpriced ($5 for XX in the bottle!) The food in general was fresh but a bit bland. The shredded chicken in the puffy tacos was tasteless and the ground beef was seasoned very similarly to the rice, (I'm guessing sweet paprika and cumin). The black beans were a tad undercooked and lacking any seasoning at all. The servings are large, not that it is a good thing. I understand the concept - "a fresher/healthier" Mexican food. As for trying to be healthier - they miss the mark. I have been to authentic Mexican restaurants (not in Charleston) that offer alternatives to fried chips and more moderate portion sizes (and prices reflecting that). As for fresh - Caliente certainly is. As for taste - lacking.

Re: “Taco Boy

WAY WAY overpriced for so-so food. I dunno, I really want to like this place. Its close to me, there are always cuties everywhere. Its always crowded with college kids!? Maybe they dont know better, or maybe they dont card them there, I dunno...I dont get it. Its a cool atmosphere, but the food is not the greatest, and again, its overpriced.
Sorry.
Just keepin' it real.

Re: “Taco Boy

Good atmosphere but overpriced for mediocre food. This place does extremely well because the concept is great, but this place wouldn't last a month in Houston. Of course they are making so much money they have no incentive to get better.

Re: “Pollo Loko Peruvian

I had the charco-grilled chicken lunch at Pollo Tropical. My chicken was overcooked and dry. I had to cover it with a liberal amount of sauce to make it edible. The sides were bland and uninteresting. I did enjoy an order of their fried plantains, that was the only good thing about my visit.

Re: “Taco Boy

I visited Taco Boy downtown for their opening pre-party, and have been back to visit a few times.

The downtown location fails at being a restaurant that serves great food. Their mexican offerings just are not very appetizing and as others have pointed out EXTREMELY overpriced. The only offering that I have really liked was the nachos with chorizo, a dish that I can honestly say is stellar. I have sampled every taco and they most really are lacking in flavor.

Their margarita selections are a joke. Honestly I would be embarrassed to serve that green water and call it a margarita. Other drinks are expensive and not at all strong. They are VERY weak. Last time I visited I ordered the "Cadillac" which is supposed to be a step up from the standard offering with top-shelf alcohol. It wasn't good.

The 2 stars are for the ambiance and the bar. It is a very cool spot, and the bar area is a hip place. It is ashame the food and drinks are sub par.

Santis is just up the road, and their food has so much more flavor and costs half as much as Taco Boy. Cheap and delicious margaritas too that no one would ever dare call watered down.

If you are serious about decent mexican food keep driving up meeting street to Santis. If you are more worried about looking cool while you dine on crummy food then Taco Boy is your spot.

Re: “Taco Boy

I must admit that I am quite disappointed in Taco Boy downtown. While the owners did a wonderful job with the renovation, it is located in an awful area of town. A parking lot mugging or a holdup of the restaurant is inevitable. The prices are outrageous for a mexican restaurant in the hood. One is much better off just heading to Santi's and getting authentic Mexican fare at a fair price. The biggest problem with Taco Boy is the service. It is absolutely awful. Wait staff completely ignore patrons who many times sit at the tables for around 15 minutes before even being approached. They refuse to split checks and are rude and irritable. I do not recommend Taco Boy and will be amazed if they survive in this location without making some serious changes.
