Two words for anybody thinking of trying Taco Boy..."Taco Bell!!!"
Wow! I ordered a shrimp PLATTER ($14) and got 8 barely-quarter-sized shrimp that made just 2 tacos with the provided tortillas. That's 2 tacos at $7 each. (For those of you who think that's a deal, I've got a bridge to sell you.) I don't know of these are locally-sourced shrimp or not, but if they are, I didn't expect to be the only person paying for the shrimper to make his living — or maybe it's that Taco Boy doesn't feel the need to make their takeout orders worth it and have their customers return. I'll certainly never go there (or take out) again. [Footnote: I also got rice and black beans with the platter; however, flavor must have been an upgrade option on the menu that I missed seeing when ordering.]
Being from Texas, I expect Mexican food to be delicious and somewhat cheap. Taco boy is neither. The carnitas tacos were pretty good, but $3.25 for a taco? Seriously? And in my thirty years on this earth, I have yet to go to a Mexican restaurant that charges for salsa... yet Taco boy charges $3 for a half-full basket of chips and 3 small bowls of salsa (no refills). They are also too good to have Happy Hour pricing on anything. Get off your high horse people. For great authentic Mexican, at affordable prices, go to Santi's that is just down the road. Or even the Taco Truck on Ashley Phosphate!
3 friends and I showed up on a Thursday afternoon, it was slightly busy. We were seated almost immediately....and we just sat. After 15 minutes of sitting there with no response from ANY waitstaff, we got up and left...and went down the street to Santis.
Had some fish tacos and a blackened chicken burrito. The flavor of the fish tacos is good, the flour tortilla does get soggy. The burrito was good. I can see how some people may think it is too spicy, the menu specifically mentions that hot salsa is added.
Its nasty
i and a friend went there for lunch on Thursday, oct 22..
I got a taco salad, (I thought I did, it didnt have a shell and i didnt taste any kind of nacho in it) and he got a tea and two tacos.
Dont go there unless your money is not an issue, my taco salad was 8 bucks with no meat, if i woulda wanted meat on it it would of been another 2.95, and my friends two tacos were 4 bucks each. Mine had a very good taste, overpriced but tasty, but my friends tacos were laughable. I think the aluminum foil they came in costs more than the ingredients. He got tabasco sauce, said at least now it will have some taste in my mouth. He got a tea and spent over ten bucks on a shitty lunch.
The waitresses are much more interested in the tips than the service. Dont worry, taco boy isnt on our list of lunch spots anymore, if you wanna find something close that is really good, try Berthas.
Went last week for Sunday "brunch" ... bland huevos con chorizo y papas, charged EXTRA for tomatillo salsa -- which was absolutely necessary to give some flavor. I'm from Texas, and while I don't expect to have the best mexican food ever in Charleston, SC, this was one of the worst. Go to Santi's... don't bother with Taco Boy.
YOU GO TO A RESTAURANT FOR THE FOOD RIGHT......so DONT go to taco boy!!! The one star is only because they won't let you put none. The food was way over priced and bland. Service was slow and poor to say that means alot becase I am a server. Don't waist your time or money i don't care what kind of building it is I want good food!! Drinks were over priced with no specials. The last comment must have been made by a relative of the owner.
If I could rate this place a zero, I would. My wife and I visited this place because we've heard good hype about the Folly Beach restaurant, and we knew that people flocked to the downtown location. When we went, it was extremely busy with people mostly drinking (a few people eating here and there). They have no happy hour specials, their tacos are TINY and PRICEY, and lack anything of what I would call flavor. Plus, they don't offer chips and salsa for free, which should be a given for any decent Mexican restaurant. The salsas served in their trio were disgusting. We ran into another couple at a gelato place in Mt. P, and they had the same experience we did. My wife and I will never go back, and they expressed similar sentiments. If you want decent Mexican food, go to Santi's. If you want a better taco, go to Taco Bell.
I have to agree with Shotgun's review. Also ate at the Summerville location, and ordered a chicken burrito, and got beef. Didn't dare say anything as they were already ignoring us, so wasn't sure what would happen to my food!
Can't get another round of drinks to save your life. Love to support local restaurants, but not when they are this bad.
One word: Meathands! Once got served chips by the same guy who was mashing up the raw hamburger meat in the back, and the chip basket (and one water glass) had flecks of raw meat on it. Never NEVER eat at this trash dump!! The only other time I have eaten there the four friends I was with (myself included) got violently ill within 10-15 minutes after leaving. I can only imagine that the people giving this place a good rating are plants from the restaurant trying to ring up business after having that article come out concerning their reusing of salsa left at a customer's table (look it up if you don't believe me!) - I would rather eat from a rat carcass!!
Nasty & massively overrated! I have to concur with the first review and I have eaten now twice at the downtown Charleston location.
We were completely ignored and finally seated where no one came to wait on us. We had to go find the manager and practically demand service. We finally received our drinks and food which was horrible, mushy, and dry all at the same time. The music was so loud we couldn't hear each other across the table. We ran out of our margaritas pretty early on (to numb the pain of being there) and our glasses sat empty the rest of the night. A waiter never came back to our table and we had to find the manager again just get our bill.
I do not get the appeal of this place. It is a dump, the food and service are horrible and no apologies offered to dissatisfied customers. One of the 3 worst places I have ever eaten, and I travel quite a bit and have seen some bad places! I wish there were a half star rating on here.
Yuk!! OK, I admit I ate at their Summerville location but one would believe that the food and service should be about the same. Right? Well, I hope not. I'll get right to the point. Went there for lunch and was totally ignored. Finally a waiter told me to sit down anywhere. The music was blaring so loud out of the speaker over my head, I asked my waiter to turn it down which he did. I could not appreciate the Mexican "rap" or whatever it was mixed in with Cindy Lauper and some Boy George...no kidding! The sauce was so generic. It basically was tomato juice with some onions and cilantro thrown in. Also on the table was some pico de gallo that was fresh and quite good. The waiter looked at me funny when I ordered the lunch chile relleno. Then he had to find it on the menu like I was the first person to ever order it. After a 25 minute wait, it came out. How disappointing!! A poblano pepper with some white cheese inside, some thin tasteless sauce, and, guess what, more cheese. Then my waiter left. I could see him walking through the parking lot smoking a cigarette and getting into his car. No service after that. I had to go track somebody down for my check. If this is the BEST Charleston has to offer, I'll stick to seafood!
Re: “Taco Boy”
taco boy blows ! terrible from every stand point !
